How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Accident record40% of score
92 out of 100, ExcellentThe Aviation Safety Network lists no accident of any kind for Air Calédonie. Many short daily sectors add up to a long record, but the airline has only ever flown a handful of aircraft, so we score it like Aircalin and Air Tahiti, not in the high 90s.
Regulatory oversight20% of score
88 out of 100, ExcellentFrance's civil aviation authority (DGAC) certifies the airline, the BEA investigates its events, and it has held IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary since 2012 (Air Calédonie; IATA member list). New Caledonia is outside the EU, so we use our 86–88 band for DGAC airlines in French Pacific territories.
Fleet15% of score
76 out of 100, GoodThree ATR 72-600s with glass cockpits, F-OZIP and F-OZLI (delivered December 2016) and F-OZKN (December 2017), per the airline. A fourth was sold in December 2025. Long heavy checks in 2025 left only two of the four to fly the schedule on some days (LNC).
Serious incidents15% of score
80 out of 100, GoodBEA: on 20 December 2024 (local time) an ATR 72 struck its tail on a night landing at Ouvéa with 72 on board; the crew flared too high on a dimly lit runway after flagging their own low night experience there. Damage was slight, no one was hurt. No other BEA case in 10 years.
Operating environment10% of score
70 out of 100, GoodShort island runways (Ouvéa 1,100 m usable, with few lights around it at night, per the BEA), tropical cyclones from November to April, and protest blockades that shut four island airports to the airline from March 2026.
Is Air Calédonie safe?
Yes. Air Calédonie, the domestic airline of New Caledonia, has no accident on record, flies three ATR 72-600 turboprops of the current model and holds an IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary under French oversight. We score it 85, a point above Air Tahiti, its closest match in French Polynesia, and three below Aircalin, the territory's international airline.
The record is not spotless. In December 2024 an ATR struck its tail on a night landing at Ouvéa, and the BEA's report says more about crew experience than about the aircraft. And in 2026 the airline went through the hardest year of its 72-year history: protest blockades closed its island airports, and in April it went into court-supervised restructuring.
Air Calédonie or Aircalin?
The two names cause endless confusion. Air Calédonie, often shortened to Aircal, uses the code TY and the radio call sign AIRCAL. It links Nouméa with the Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa) and Île des Pins, and since October 2024 it has also flown Nouméa to Port Vila in Vanuatu. Aircalin, code SB and call sign AIRCALIN, flies Airbus jets abroad. They share a shareholder, the territory, but they are separate airlines with separate certificates, and this score covers Air Calédonie only.
Air Calédonie has also hired out an ATR with its own crews, maintenance and insurance to fly domestic routes for Air Vanuatu on weekdays, from October 2025 until about March 2026, while Air Vanuatu's own ATR was grounded. On those flights its certificate and pilots flew the passengers, even though the ticket said Air Vanuatu, so their events count here.
What happened at Ouvéa in 2024
On the evening of 20 December 2024, an Air Calédonie ATR from Nouméa-Magenta approached Ouvéa in the dark with 68 passengers and four crew. During the descent briefing, both pilots named the short runway and the night landing as threats, and both said they had little experience of landing at night on runway 31 there. Air Calédonie schedules nearly all its flights in daylight, so night landings in the islands are rare.
The approach was stable. Near the threshold, with few lights around the runway to judge height, the co-pilot, who was flying, began the flare at about 60 feet, some 40 feet higher than ATR recommends, cut the power and pulled the nose up hard. The aircraft rose slightly, the nose kept climbing to 6.4 degrees, and the tail touched the runway. The crew only found the marks on the tail bumper after parking; a maintenance inspection the next day found no further damage, and no one was hurt.
The BEA classified it as an incident, not a serious incident, and published its final report in March 2026. It found that the pilots had noticed their lack of experience but did not turn it into a plan, such as agreeing on a landing technique for a dark runway. Air Calédonie sent its pilots a bulletin on tail-strike risk. We found no other BEA investigation into the airline in the past ten years, and we score incidents at 80.
A small fleet under strain
Air Calédonie took four new ATR 72-600s in 2016 and 2017. They have glass cockpits and are the same model Air Tahiti and many regional airlines fly. Running a fleet that small leaves little slack. In 2025 three of the four needed their eight-year heavy check, each took about twice as long as planned because of parts shortages, and on some days only two aircraft could fly.
Then the money ran out. Traffic fell below 200,000 passengers in 2025, the lowest in more than 30 years, after the 2024 riots kept tourists away. In December 2025 the airline sold one ATR, which is being converted into a freighter for FedEx's feeder network. On 2 March 2026 the government moved its flights from Magenta, the city airport, to La Tontouta, and protesters who opposed the move blockaded four island airports. The airline lost about 10 million Pacific francs a day, filed for protection, and on 14 April a Nouméa court placed it in receivership. In October the court extended the observation period to April 2027.
None of this is a safety finding. Receivership does not touch the airline's certificate or its IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary audit, and the French authorities oversee it as before. But a cash-strapped airline with three aircraft has less room to absorb a long maintenance check or a fault, so expect cancellations.
Who checks Air Calédonie?
Civil aviation safety in New Caledonia stays with the French state. The DGAC certifies the airline, and the BEA investigates and publishes even minor events. Air Calédonie has held an IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary since 2012 and renews it every two years; it is an IATA member, which requires it. Under our rules a DGAC-certified airline in a French Pacific territory with IOSA scores 86 to 88. We give 88, level with Air Tahiti and Aircalin.
Flying Air Calédonie in practice
- Check which islands are served. In October 2026 the airline flew to Île des Pins, Lifou and, twice a week, Ouvéa; Maré was still cut off. A small local airline, Air Océania, flies one Tecnam to Maré and Ouvéa from Magenta.
- Plan the road to La Tontouta. It is about 50 km from central Nouméa; allow an hour by car or shuttle.
- Keep a buffer before long-haul flights. With three aircraft, one fault can cancel a day's island flights. Do not fly in from Lifou on the morning of your Aircalin departure to Paris or Tokyo.
How we scored it
The accident record (92) and oversight (88) are the strongest factors: no accident on record and French oversight with IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary. The incidents score (80) reflects the 2024 Ouvéa Tail strikeWhen the tail of an aircraft touches the runway during take-off or landing, usually because the nose was raised too far or too early.More in the glossary. The fleet (76) is modern but very small, and the environment (70) brings short island runways, cyclones and the 2026 airport blockades.
Questions people ask
Is Air Calédonie the same airline as Aircalin?
No. Air Calédonie (TY, call sign AIRCAL) flies ATR turboprops inside New Caledonia and to Port Vila. Aircalin (SB, call sign AIRCALIN) flies Airbus jets to Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Paris. Both are owned by New Caledonian public bodies, but they hold separate certificates and have separate records.
Has Air Calédonie ever had a crash?
The Aviation Safety Network lists no accident of any kind for the airline, which has flown since 1954, first as Transpac. Its most recent investigated event was a Tail strikeWhen the tail of an aircraft touches the runway during take-off or landing, usually because the nose was raised too far or too early.More in the glossary on a night landing at Ouvéa in December 2024; the tail was slightly damaged and none of the 72 people on board was hurt.
Is Air Calédonie still flying in 2026?
Yes, on a reduced network. Protest blockades stopped all island flights from 2 March 2026; Île des Pins reopened within a month, Lifou in June and Ouvéa, with two flights a week, in September. Maré was still not served in October 2026. The airline is in court-supervised restructuring until April 2027.
Does the receivership make Air Calédonie less safe?
Not by itself. Its certificate, IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary and French oversight do not change in receivership, and the BEA still investigates its events. The practical risk for passengers is cancellations, since only three aircraft fly the network. Book flexible fares and allow a spare day before an international connection.
Which airport does Air Calédonie fly from in Nouméa?
Since 2 March 2026 all its flights use Nouméa-La Tontouta International, about 50 km north-west of the city, instead of Magenta, the city airport it used for about 70 years. Allow about an hour by road from central Nouméa.
