Is Discover Airlines safe?

Discover Airlines

Discover Airlines, the Lufthansa Group's leisure airline from Frankfurt and Munich, has had no accident since it began flying in July 2021 and holds a German certificate under EASA rules. Its record is short, its A320s and A330s came second-hand from Lufthansa, and two serious incidents at Windhoek are on file.

No fatal accident and no Hull lossAn accident in which an aircraft is destroyed or damaged beyond economic repair. People may or may not be hurt.More in the glossary since the first flight in July 2021; the ASN files hold no record for Discover or Eurowings Discover. The 2023 Windhoek hard landing is a serious incident in the investigators' files and counts under incidents. Five years of leisure flying is a short record, so we score it like other young airlines with a clean history.

Frankfurt and Munich are well equipped. The leisure network includes Windhoek, Mombasa and Zanzibar, the Caribbean, Canada and Greek islands such as Santorini, where short runways, high-altitude airports and summer crowds add difficulty.

Is Discover Airlines safe?

Yes, with a short track record. Discover has flown holiday routes from Frankfurt and Munich since July 2021 without an accident, under a German certificate within the EU's EASA system and with IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary. We score it 82. That is below established German airlines such as its parent Lufthansa (87) and Condor (85), Discover's main leisure rival. The gap comes from three things: five years is not long enough to prove a record, the jets are second-hand, and two serious incidents in Namibia point at crew performance.

What is Discover Airlines?

Lufthansa set up the airline during the pandemic to fly leisure routes at lower cost than its main brand. EW Discover GmbH got its air operator certificate from the German LBA in June 2021, and the first flight left Frankfurt for Mombasa and Zanzibar on 24 July 2021 under the name Eurowings Discover. The Lufthansa Group renamed it Discover Airlines in September 2023. The ICAO code OCN and the call sign "Ocean" come from the project's original name.

There is one certificate, and every 4Y flight runs under it. Discover is not part of Eurowings, the group's low-cost airline, despite the old name. One investigation record still shows the confusion: the BEA's file on the 2023 Windhoek hard landing lists the operator as "Eurowings GmbH", but the flight was 4Y142, flown by a Discover crew, and Namibia's preliminary report names EW Discover GmbH as a party, so it counts here.

Discover also flies for its parent. In the winter of 2023/24 it took over Lufthansa routes from Munich, and in the 2026/27 winter it flies seven Lufthansa routes from Frankfurt and Munich, including all flights from Munich to Belgrade and Lyon. In the other direction, Lufthansa flew some Discover routes on wet lease in 2026, and Discover has wet-leased aircraft with crews from other airlines in busy summers. Under our rule, an event on such a flight counts on the page of the airline whose crew and certificate flew it.

What incidents has Discover had?

  • 23 December 2022, Windhoek. An A330-300 bound for Frankfurt rejected its take-off twice at very low speed. After a reset of the aircraft systems it left about an hour later. Namibia's Directorate of Aircraft Accident and Incident Investigations (DAAII) classed it as a serious incident, with Germany's BFU assisting.
  • 19 February 2023, Windhoek. An A330-200 from Frankfurt with 274 people on board touched down hard on runway 26. The DAAII's preliminary report found a stable approach in good weather but a late flare, and the landing was flown by a first officer on his first A330 flight after type training. The Aviation Herald reported substantial damage, but the DAAII found no visible damage to the landing gear or airframe in its first inspection and classed the event as a serious incident, as does the BEA. The aircraft was still on the ground in Windhoek five days later.
  • 17 July 2022, near Cork. An A330-300 from Puerto Plata lost cabin pressure at 40,000 feet, dropped the oxygen masks and descended to 10,000 feet before diverting to Düsseldorf.
  • 19 July 2023, Frankfurt. On approach from Heraklion, the captain of an A320 became incapacitated and the first officer landed alone. The BFU opened an investigation.
  • 23 July 2023, Santorini. An A320 veered sharply left at low speed on its take-off run; the crew stopped and brought it back to the centreline.

Two of the five events involved crews who had just qualified on the aircraft or in the seat. That fits an airline that built a crew of about 500 pilots from nothing in three years, and it is the main reason incidents score 74. We found no safety fines.

The strikes

Discover's labour dispute is long and public. In August 2024 the airline signed its first collective agreements, for about 500 pilots and 1,400 cabin crew, with the services union Verdi. The pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit and the cabin union UFO, which say they have far more members at Discover, called it undemocratic and struck: four days at the end of August 2024 and again from 6 August 2025. Many flights still ran, some on partner airlines. A strike is not a safety finding, and we do not score it, but it can upend a holiday booking.

How old is the Discover fleet?

Discover flies hand-me-downs. At the end of 2025 it had 14 A330s and 16 A320s, all taken over from other Lufthansa Group airlines, according to the group's annual report. None is a current-generation type, and some A330-200s are about 20 years old. The plan is to grow to 40 aircraft by 2028, partly with four A350-900s from 2027. Discover does not publish an average age; the Lufthansa Group averaged 14.4 years.

Flying Discover: what to check

  • Look at "operated by". A Lufthansa LH flight can be flown by Discover, and a 4Y flight in summer can be flown by a wet-lease partner.
  • Check for strike calls before you leave. The unions have struck in August two years running, at the peak of the holiday season.
  • Keep your belt fastened on long-haul routes to Africa and the Caribbean. These routes cross tropical storm areas, and the passengers hurt in turbulence are usually the ones not strapped in.

How we scored it

Oversight (90) and a clean accident record (88, held below established airlines because the record is only five years long) carry Discover. The second-hand fleet (62) is its weakest factor, and the Windhoek events hold incidents at 74. The leisure network scores 80, the same as Condor. Overall 82.

Questions people ask

Is Discover Airlines the same as Eurowings Discover?

Yes. The airline started flying on 24 July 2021 as Eurowings Discover, with a first flight from Frankfurt to Mombasa and Zanzibar, and was renamed Discover Airlines in September 2023. The company, EW Discover GmbH, and its 4Y code stayed the same. It is separate from Eurowings, the Lufthansa Group's low-cost airline, which has its own certificate and EW flight numbers.

Has Discover Airlines had an accident?

No. Discover has had no fatal accident and no Hull lossAn accident in which an aircraft is destroyed or damaged beyond economic repair. People may or may not be hurt.More in the glossary since it began flying in 2021. The most serious event was a hard landing at Windhoek in February 2023, which kept an A330 on the ground there for several days; nobody was hurt, and Namibia's investigators classed it as a serious incident.

Do the Discover strikes affect safety?

The strikes are a pay and union dispute, not a safety finding. Pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit and cabin union UFO walked out for several days in August 2024 and again in August 2025, because Discover signed its first contracts with the smaller union Verdi. Flights were cancelled or handed to partner airlines; check your booking before you travel in a strike period.

Why is my Lufthansa flight operated by Discover?

Lufthansa uses Discover crews and aircraft on some of its own routes. In the 2026/27 winter Discover flies seven Lufthansa routes from Frankfurt and Munich, such as Munich to Belgrade and Lyon, which Discover says is for pilot training. The flight then runs under Discover's certificate, and its events count on this page.
