Is JetSMART Argentina safe?

JetSMART Argentina

JetSMART Argentina, the JetSMART group's Argentine airline, has flown since April 2019 without an accident, and its Airbus A320 and A321neo fleet averaged under 7 years in April 2026. Its incidents are mostly bird strikes and storms, handled by the book; a short history and fast growth keep it below the top band.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Accident record40% of score

    88 out of 100, Excellent

No accident with deaths, serious injuries or substantial damage since JetSMART Argentina began domestic flights in April 2019; the ASN database holds no record for it. Seven years is a short history, so we use the score we give young airlines with a clean record.

  • Regulatory oversight20% of score

    78 out of 100, Good

Argentina's ANAC holds FAA IASAThe US FAA's check of whether a country's aviation regulator meets ICAO standards. Category 1 means it does; Category 2 means it does not.More in the glossary Category 1 (April 2025 list) and JetSMART Argentina is an IATA member, so IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary. The JST investigates accidents and incidents but publishes fewer and slower reports than the best boards.

  • Fleet15% of score

    88 out of 100, Excellent

In April 2026 the airline flew 14 jets, 11 A320ceo averaging 7.96 years and 3 A321neo averaging 2.40, for 6.77 years overall, the youngest fleet in Argentina (AviacionNews). JetSMART plans 23 aircraft for summer 2026–27, 10 of them A321neo.

  • Serious incidents15% of score

    80 out of 100, Good

Hail cracked a windshield on approach to Jujuy in January 2024; animal and bird strikes forced high-speed rejected take-offs at Neuquén (2024) and Ushuaia (2025), all investigated by the JST. A captain fell ill on approach to Córdoba in 2022 and the first officer landed.

  • Operating environment10% of score

    72 out of 100, Good

Patagonian routes reach windy Ushuaia, Neuquén and Bariloche, with snow in winter. Salta and Jujuy sit high in the north-west, with summer hail and thunderstorms; Buenos Aires-Aeroparque is a short city runway on the River Plate.

Is JetSMART Argentina safe?

Yes. JetSMART Argentina has carried more than 15 million passengers since its first domestic flights in April 2019 without an accident, and its Airbus fleet is the youngest of any Argentine airline at under seven years. The catch is a short record that is now being stretched: the airline plans to grow from 14 to 23 aircraft within a year as it takes over routes Flybondi has dropped. We score it 83, one point above Aerolíneas Argentinas (82) and just below JetSMART Chile (84).

Which JetSMART airline will you fly?

If your flight is inside Argentina, this one. Argentine law reserves domestic routes for Argentine airlines, so every JetSMART flight between two Argentine cities is flown under JetSMART Argentina's certificate by its crews, under the call sign SMARTBIRD. The ticket may still carry a JA flight number, the code of JetSMART Chile, and the aircraft may wear a Chilean CC- registration: the group swaps jets between its airlines, and in April 2026 six of the 14 aircraft in Argentina were Chilean-registered. Neither changes who is responsible for the flight.

International flights from Buenos Aires can be flown by JetSMART Argentina or JetSMART Chile. Look for "operated by" on your booking. Both are IATA members, which requires an IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary safety audit, and both fly the same Airbus types.

Has JetSMART Argentina had any accidents?

No. Nobody has died or been seriously hurt on a JetSMART Argentina flight, and no aircraft has been Hull lossAn accident in which an aircraft is destroyed or damaged beyond economic repair. People may or may not be hurt.More in the glossary or badly damaged. The Aviation Safety Network database holds no record for it. Argentina's accident board, the JST, has opened investigations into several incidents:

  • Jujuy, 29 January 2024. An A320 from Buenos Aires flew through hail on final approach. A windshield cracked, the crew landed normally, and the return flight was cancelled until the glass was replaced.
  • Neuquén, 26 September 2024. The crew of an A320 bound for Aeroparque rejected the take-off at about 130 knots after hitting an animal on the runway. The aircraft left about 70 minutes later after checks.
  • Ushuaia, 23 January 2025. A bird was drawn into an engine at about 105 knots on the take-off roll, the crew stopped, and the fan blades had to be repaired. The jet flew again three days later.

Two other events show crews doing what they are trained for. In July 2022 the captain of flight WJ3266 fell ill on approach to Córdoba; the first officer took over and landed normally with 169 passengers. In July 2026 a warning of smoke in the forward cargo hold, later found to be false, led to a firm landing and a runway evacuation at Bariloche, with no one hurt.

Rejected take-offs at high speed are among the riskier moments in a flight, and both were handled well. We count these events lightly, which is why the incidents score is 80 rather than in the 90s: the airline has no Runway excursionWhen an aircraft leaves the runway surface during take-off or landing, either off the end (an overrun) or off the side (a veer-off).More in the glossary, hard landings or crew errors on record, but seven years is not long.

How new is the fleet?

New by Argentine standards. In April 2026 the fleet in Argentina was 11 Airbus A320ceo averaging 7.96 years and three A321neo averaging 2.40, for 6.77 years overall, against 11.85 for Aerolíneas Argentinas and 17.90 for Flybondi (AviacionNews). JetSMART told the press in June 2026 that it would have 17 aircraft by October, 19 by December and 23 for the summer peak, 10 of them A321neo. No airline in Argentina other than Aerolíneas has had that many aircraft since 2000.

Fast growth is the point to watch. More aircraft need more pilots, engineers and checks, and the JetSMART group shares one pool of jets across four certificates. So far there is no sign of strain in the safety record.

How hard is the network?

About average for Argentina. From Aeroparque and Ezeiza the airline flies to Patagonia (Bariloche, Neuquén, San Martín de los Andes, Trelew, Comodoro Rivadavia and Ushuaia), where strong winds, snow and mountain turbulence are routine. In the north-west, Salta and Jujuy lie at over 900 metres and get summer thunderstorms with hail, as the 2024 Jujuy flight found. At the end of July 2026 a flight from Neuquén was struck by lightning while trying to land at Aeroparque in a storm and returned to Neuquén.

How we scored it

A clean accident record (88, our score for young airlines without losses) and a young fleet (88) carry the score. Argentine oversight with IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary scores 78, as for Aerolíneas Argentinas. Bird and animal strikes, hail and a pilot incapacitation, all handled safely, put serious incidents at 80, and Patagonian and north-western weather puts the environment at 72. Overall 83.

Flying JetSMART Argentina: what to check

  • Pay for the bag you need. The fare includes only a small personal item. An oversized bag forced into an overhead locker can fall out in Patagonian turbulence, and fighting for locker space slows an evacuation.
  • Keep your belt on in the south. Approaches to Ushuaia, Bariloche and Neuquén are often bumpy, even on a clear day.
  • Allow for weather in winter. Snow at Bariloche and wind at Ushuaia cause diversions; book a later onward connection than you think you need.

Questions people ask

Is JetSMART Argentina the same airline as JetSMART?

It is part of the same group, with the same brand, owners and Airbus fleet, but it is a separate Argentine company with its own air operator certificate, its own codes (WJ / JES) and its own ATC call sign, SMARTBIRD. Argentine domestic flights must be flown by an Argentine airline, so a JetSMART flight inside Argentina is JetSMART Argentina's, even when the ticket shows a JA flight number.

Has JetSMART Argentina ever had a crash?

No. Since domestic flights began in April 2019, no JetSMART Argentina aircraft has crashed or been badly damaged, and nobody has died or been seriously hurt on one of its flights. The events on record are bird and animal strikes, a hail-cracked windshield and a pilot who fell ill, all of which ended with safe landings or stops.

Is JetSMART safer than Flybondi?

On our scores, yes: JetSMART Argentina 83, Flybondi 71. JetSMART has a younger Airbus fleet, an IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary audit and no accident, while Flybondi had two Tail strikeWhen the tail of an aircraft touches the runway during take-off or landing, usually because the nose was raised too far or too early.More in the glossary with damage and has not flown since August 2026.

Is JetSMART Argentina safer than Aerolíneas Argentinas?

The two score about the same: JetSMART Argentina 83, Aerolíneas Argentinas 82. Aerolíneas has the longer clean record (no fatal accident since 1997), JetSMART the much younger fleet. Both are IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary and overseen by ANAC.
