Is Parata Air safe?
Parata Air
Parata Air is the former Fly Gangwon, restarted by the appliance maker Winix with a new operating certificate in 2025. Neither airline has had an accident and the ministry has not fined it, but the current airline has flown for only a year with five leased Airbus jets and no confirmed IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Accident record40% of score
86 out of 100, ExcellentNo accident for Fly Gangwon from November 2019 to its May 2023 shutdown, or for Parata Air since 30 September 2025 (ASN, investigation boards). The airline running today has about a year of flights on a new certificate, a shorter record than Aero K or Air Premia.

Heavy checks go to Lufthansa Technik Philippines.
Serious incidents15% of score
76 out of 100, GoodNeither Fly Gangwon nor Parata is among the six Korean airlines MOLIT fined for safety breaches from 2021 to 2025, and we found no investigation report. Parata had the highest cancellation rate of Korean airlines in the first half of 2026 (2.8% of domestic flights). The record is thin.
Operating environment10% of score
80 out of 100, GoodDomestic flights from Gimpo and Yangyang to Jeju and short international routes from Incheon to Japan, Vietnam and, from November 2026, Shenzhen, mostly to well-equipped airports. Winter snow, summer typhoons and strong winds at Jeju are the main hazards. No EASA conflict-zone bulletin covers South Korea.
Is Parata Air safe?
Probably, but there is very little to judge it by. Parata Air has flown passengers again only since 30 September 2025, on a new operating certificate, with five leased Airbus jets. Neither it nor Fly Gangwon, the airline it used to be, has had an accident, and the Korean transport ministry (MOLIT) has not fined either for a safety breach. We score it 80, a point below Aero K, with low confidence: a clean year is good news, not proof.
From Fly Gangwon to Parata Air
Fly Gangwon was set up in 2016 to give Yangyang airport, on Korea's east coast, a home airline. It flew from November 2019 with Boeing 737-800s, lost money through the pandemic, and in 2022 signed up for widebody A330s, a choice the Korean business press later linked to its collapse. In May 2023 it stopped flying and filed for court rehabilitation, and by November it had returned its last aircraft.
In 2024 the court picked Winix, a household appliance maker with no airline experience, as the buyer. The company was renamed Parata Air and had to win a new air operator certificate (AOC) before it could carry passengers. Its first flight, Yangyang to Jeju, left on 30 September 2025, and international flights from Incheon to Tokyo Narita, Osaka, Da Nang, Nha Trang and Phu Quoc followed in November. Sapporo and Hanoi came in 2026, and Shenzhen is due on 9 November 2026.
That history matters for how we read the record. Fly Gangwon's three and a half years without an accident count, but the pilots, aircraft, owner and manuals of today's airline are mostly new. In practice, Parata's own record is one year long.
Money is tight. Parata made an operating loss of 67.1 billion won in 2025, and in June 2026 ChosunBiz reported that Winix was looking for an investor to take over as largest shareholder; Parata said it was not considering a share issue. Two weeks later, after a jump in fuel prices, it asked staff to give back part of their pay: the chief executive his whole June salary, executives 30%, and other employees could switch to a four-day week for a fifth less pay (Maeil Business). We have seen no sign that this has reached maintenance or training, and it does not change the score, but we are watching it.
What planes does Parata Air fly?
Two Airbus types, both Fly-by-wireA flight control system in which the pilot's inputs go to computers, which then move the control surfaces. Many such systems also stop unsafe manoeuvres.More in the glossary. In August 2026 the fleet was three A330-200s, registered HL8709, HL8714 and HL8768, and two A320-200s. A sixth aircraft, the A320 HL8788, was contracted in October 2026. All are leased; the first A330 came from the United States in summer 2025, after a few days' wait for an FAA ferry permit.
Parata does not publish the age of its aircraft, but they are not young. The third A330, HL8768, was 14.5 years old when it arrived in August 2026, after flying for Garuda Indonesia from 2012, and fleet trackers date HL8709, the first A330, which came from the United States, to 2009. We score the fleet at 66: current types, but second-hand ceo versions rather than the A330neo or A320neo. Heavy maintenance is done by Lufthansa Technik Philippines, according to the airline's US filing, and a parts deal with TP Aerospace covers wheels and brakes for both types.
A small fleet with two types has little slack. If one A330 is out of service, a long flight either waits or gets an A320 with fewer seats. That shows in the numbers: in the first half of 2026, Parata cancelled 2.8% of its domestic flights, the highest rate of any Korean airline in MOLIT's data, even though its on-time rate from January to July was the best of the 11 Korean airlines.
Who oversees Parata Air?
MOLIT, which holds FAA IASAThe US FAA's check of whether a country's aviation regulator meets ICAO standards. Category 1 means it does; Category 2 means it does not.More in the glossary Category 1; no Korean airline is on the EU Air Safety ListThe European Commission's list of airlines banned or restricted from flying in EU airspace because they do not meet international safety standards.More in the glossary. Parata is not an IATA member, and IATA membership requires the IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary safety audit, so we could not confirm that Parata has passed one. Korean airlines with IOSA score 84 for oversight, which already includes a deduction for the ministry's approval of the concrete localizer berm that made the 2024 Muan crash so deadly. Without IOSA, Parata gets 80, the same as Aero K.
MOLIT's list of safety fines from 2021 to 2025 names six airlines: T'way, Jeju Air, Korean Air, Jin Air, Asiana and Air Busan. Fly Gangwon and Parata are not among them.
Where does Parata Air fly?
Mostly short routes to large airports: Gimpo and Yangyang to Jeju, and Incheon to Japan and Vietnam, with China from November 2026. Winter snow, summer typhoons and strong winds at Jeju are the usual hazards in Korea. Parata has asked to fly A330s to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and is now aiming for Los Angeles in the first half of 2027. Long transpacific flights would be a big step for an airline with three widebodies.
Flying Parata Air
Buy a flexible ticket or leave a buffer day on trips where a cancellation would be costly; with five aircraft, a single technical fault can cancel a flight rather than delay it. Check whether your flight uses an A330 or an A320 if seat space matters. For safety, the usual rules apply: keep your belt fastened when seated, because turbulence is the most common cause of injury on any airline.
How we scored it
Accident record (86) is clean but short. Oversight (80) reflects a strong regulator without a confirmed IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary audit. Fleet (66) is the weakest factor because the jets are second-hand and mid-life, and serious incidents (76) has no findings against the airline but little history. Overall 80. Compare Air Premia, the other young Korean airline flying widebodies from Incheon.
Questions people ask
Is Parata Air the same airline as Fly Gangwon?
It is the same company under a new name and owner. Fly Gangwon stopped flying in May 2023 and entered court rehabilitation; the appliance maker Winix bought it in 2024, renamed it Parata Air and won a new operating certificate before flights restarted on 30 September 2025. The aircraft, owner and most of the network are new.
What planes does Parata Air fly?
Airbus A330-200 widebodies, the newest with 260 seats including 18 in business, on routes such as Tokyo, Da Nang and Hanoi, and A320-200s on domestic flights and routes such as Osaka. In August 2026 it had five aircraft, three A330s and two A320s, all leased; a sixth, an A320, was contracted in October.
Has Parata Air had an accident?
No. Neither Parata Air nor Fly Gangwon has had an accident or lost an aircraft, and the transport ministry has not fined either for a safety breach. Parata has flown for only about a year, so the record says little yet.
Why are Parata Air flights cancelled more often?
Ministry data for January to June 2026 show Parata cancelled 2.8% of its domestic flights and 0.4% of international ones, the highest rates of any Korean airline. With five aircraft, one out of service hits the schedule hard. The same period, its on-time record was among the best.
Will Parata Air fly to the United States?
It plans to. Parata applied to the US Department of Transportation in October 2025 to fly A330s from Incheon to Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and in October 2026 it was aiming for Los Angeles in the first half of 2027. The US flights had not started by late October 2026.
