Is Suparna Airlines safe?

Suparna Airlines

Suparna Airlines, the former Yangtze River Express, flies a dozen Boeing 737-800s on domestic routes from Shanghai Pudong and a small fleet of 747 and 777 freighters. It has no accident on record, but China's regulator publishes little and the airline publishes even less.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Accident record40% of score

    91 out of 100, Excellent

The Aviation Safety Network has no accident or Hull lossAn accident in which an aircraft is destroyed or damaged beyond economic repair. People may or may not be hurt.More in the glossary for Suparna or its former names, Yangtze River Express and Yangtze River Airlines, in more than 20 years of cargo flights and about 11 years of passenger flights. Volumes are small, so it stays below the top band.

  • Regulatory oversight20% of score

    80 out of 100, Good

China holds FAA IASAThe US FAA's check of whether a country's aviation regulator meets ICAO standards. Category 1 means it does; Category 2 means it does not.More in the glossary Category 1 (April 2025), no Chinese airline is on the EU Air Safety ListThe European Commission's list of airlines banned or restricted from flying in EU airspace because they do not meet international safety standards.More in the glossary (June 2026), and China reports a 90.19% ICAO audit score for 2024. CAAC publishes few investigation reports. Suparna is an IATA member, which requires IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary.

  • Fleet15% of score

    68 out of 100, Fair

12 Boeing 737-800s for passengers, plus 3 Boeing 747 freighters and 2 new 777Fs delivered in 2025 (July 2026 report). The 737-800 is not Fly-by-wireA flight control system in which the pilot's inputs go to computers, which then move the control surfaces. Many such systems also stop unsafe manoeuvres.More in the glossary, the 747-400 freighters are an old design, and a 2024 plan to switch to the C919 had not started by July 2026.

  • Serious incidents15% of score

    74 out of 100, Good

We found no public serious incident report, fine or grounding for the airline, and AeroInside has no entry for it. CAAC publishes little and the airline draws little coverage, so this mainly reflects a lack of data, not a proven clean record.

  • Operating environment10% of score

    76 out of 100, Good

Passenger flights run from Shanghai Pudong, a modern hub, on about 21 domestic routes. Typhoons and summer storms affect the east coast. Freighters fly long-haul to Europe and North America, which does not affect passengers.

Is Suparna Airlines safe?

On the public record, yes. Suparna Airlines has flown freighters since 2003, when it started as Yangtze River Express, and passengers since about 2015, and the Aviation Safety Network database has no accident or lost aircraft for it under any of its names. We score it 81.

Two things hold it back. Its passenger fleet is a dozen Boeing 737-800s, an older design, and its freighters include Boeing 747s of a type Boeing stopped building years ago. And there is very little to check: China's regulator publishes few incident reports, Suparna publishes almost nothing, and the specialist incident sites have no entry for it. A record that thin is not the same as a proven clean one.

Who runs it?

Suparna is part of the HNA aviation group, which Liaoning Fangda Group has controlled since the group's 2021 restructuring. The company was registered in July 2002 and has its operations base at Shanghai Pudong. In 2017 it changed its English name from Yangtze River Airlines to Suparna, a Sanskrit name linked to the mythical bird Garuda; its Chinese name is Jinpeng (金鹏).

In October 2025 a filing by Hainan Airlines, which keeps 9.2%, disclosed a deal under which HNA Aviation Group transfers its 77.9% stake to HNA Cargo; we found no later filing confirming completion. Lucky Air holds 7.9%. The filing gives a picture of the finances: revenue of CNY 3.36 billion in 2024 and negative net assets of about CNY 488 million at the end of that year, turned into positive net assets of about CNY 660 million by the end of July 2025. We found nothing linking the money troubles to safety.

Suparna flies under its own Y8 code and its own operating certificate, so its record counts here, not on the Hainan page.

What does it fly?

TypeAircraftUse
Boeing 737-80012Passenger flights
Boeing 747-400 freighter3Long-haul cargo
Boeing 777F2Long-haul cargo, delivered 2025

These counts come from a July 2026 report on the airline. Suparna publishes no average age. The 737-800 has a good record but lacks Fly-by-wireA flight control system in which the pilot's inputs go to computers, which then move the control surfaces. Many such systems also stop unsafe manoeuvres.More in the glossary controls. The two 777Fs are new; the 747-400 is a late-1980s design without fly-by-wire controls.

The fleet was meant to change faster. In 2023 the HNA group ordered 60 Comac C919s, half of them for Suparna, and in April 2024 the airline said it would take its first one at the end of that year and have 30 by the end of 2027, replacing every 737. The July 2026 report still lists only 737-800s for passengers. We score the fleet 68, a little below all-737 airlines such as Kunming Airlines, because of the old freighters.

Where does it fly?

Passenger flights start from Shanghai Pudong, one of China's best-equipped airports, on about 21 domestic routes. Summer brings thunderstorms and, from July to October, typhoons on the east coast. Most of the destinations are large Chinese cities with modern airports.

The freighters fly long-haul routes to Europe and North America, from Shanghai and Nanjing. That is harder, night-heavy flying, but it carries no passengers, so it weighs little in our environment score of 76.

Oversight

China holds FAA IASAThe US FAA's check of whether a country's aviation regulator meets ICAO standards. Category 1 means it does; Category 2 means it does not.More in the glossary in the FAA's International Aviation Safety Assessment, and no Chinese airline is on the EU Air Safety ListThe European Commission's list of airlines banned or restricted from flying in EU airspace because they do not meet international safety standards.More in the glossary. China told the ICAO Assembly that it scored 90.19% in its 2024 ICAO safety audit. Suparna is on the IATA member list, which requires an IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary audit. Our standard score for a Chinese airline with IOSA is 80, held down by how little the CAAC publishes.

Before you fly

  • Typhoon days in Shanghai: when a typhoon nears the coast, flights from Pudong are cancelled in waves. Check the airline's hotline (95071888) or app the evening before rather than heading to the airport.
  • Summer afternoons: thunderstorms over the Yangtze delta cause holding and diversions. Keep your seat belt fastened while seated and leave a long gap before any onward connection.
  • Delays and rebooking: with only 12 passenger jets, one aircraft out of service can cancel a whole day of flights on a route. On a tight schedule, book a morning flight so a later one is still possible.

How we scored it

The accident record (91) is the strongest factor: more than 20 years without an accident on record, though at small volumes. Oversight (80) is the standard Chinese score with IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary. The fleet (68) is the weakest, with 737-800s of undisclosed age and old 747 freighters, and incidents (74) are held down by missing data rather than by anything we found.

Questions people ask

Is Suparna Airlines the same as Jinpeng Airlines?

Yes. Its Chinese name is 金鹏航空 (Jinpeng Hangkong), and it now also calls itself New HNA Suparna Airlines. It began as Yangtze River Express, a cargo airline, and took the name Suparna in 2017. Its codes are Y8 and YZR.

Has Suparna Airlines ever had a crash?

No. The Aviation Safety Network database has no accident and no lost aircraft for Suparna or its earlier names, on cargo or passenger flights. We also found no public report of a serious incident, although China's regulator publishes few.

What aircraft does Suparna Airlines fly?

Passengers fly on Boeing 737-800s, 12 of them in July 2026. The cargo side flies 3 Boeing 747 freighters and 2 Boeing 777Fs that arrived in 2025. A plan announced in 2024 to replace the 737s with 30 Comac C919s by the end of 2027 had not produced a delivery by July 2026.

Who owns Suparna Airlines?

It belongs to the HNA aviation group, controlled by Liaoning Fangda Group. Under a deal disclosed in October 2025, HNA Aviation Group is moving its 77.9% stake to HNA Cargo, another group company. Hainan Airlines Holding keeps 9.2% and its subsidiary Lucky Air 7.9%.
