Is Cash App safe?
Cash App
Cash App collects less for advertising than most payment apps, and its App Store label shows no cross-app tracking. Its weak point is fraud. The CFPB found in 2025 that Block mishandled fraud and unauthorized transfers, and state regulators and attorneys general have added penalties since.

How the score breaks down

Security30% of score
45 out of 100, WeakThe CFPB found in 2025 that Block failed to investigate unauthorized transfers as federal law requires and misrepresented its protection against them. A former employee took Cash App Investing customer reports in December 2021.

Is Cash App safe?
Cash App is safe for sending money to people you know, and it collects less advertising data than most payment apps. Fraud handling is where it falls short. In January 2025 the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau ordered Block, Cash App's owner, to pay up to $175 million after finding that it failed to deal properly with fraud and with disputes over unauthorized transfers. Forty-six states added a $45 million settlement over the same problem in July 2026. We score it 47/100, close to Venmo at 48 and below PayPal at 55.
What did the CFPB find?
The CFPB's consent order of 16 January 2025 is the clearest public account of Cash App's weak points. The Bureau found that Block:
- did not provide effective customer service, including live phone agents, which helped fake "Cash App support" lines steal customers' details;
- did not take timely, appropriate and effective measures to prevent, detect and address fraud on the platform;
- used the card network's chargeback process in place of the investigation that the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E require for unauthorized transfers;
- misrepresented that it protected customers from unauthorized transfers.
Block was ordered to pay at least $75 million and up to $120 million in redress, plus a $55 million civil penalty, and to change its practices. In July 2026 the multistate settlement added a guarantee: if Block has not paid the CFPB at least $75 million by 2030, it must pay that amount to the states instead.
Scams on Cash App
Cash App is built for instant payments to anyone with a $cashtag, which is also what scammers like. Common patterns include fake support lines and social media accounts, fake giveaways and "money flipping" offers, and sellers who vanish after payment. A payment you authorise is usually final.
The states' 2026 case alleged that Block knew fraudulent activity was rising and did not warn users or strengthen protections. Block's fight with organised fraud also shows in the money-laundering cases. New York's Department of Financial Services fined Block $40 million in April 2025 over its Anti-money launderingThe rules and checks that stop criminals from moving illegal money through banks, payment firms and crypto exchanges.More in the glossary programme, citing a criminal network of 25 to 30 people that opened 8,359 Cash App accounts with false information before Block caught it in 2022. Washington state settled for $20 million in July 2026 over unemployment benefits stolen through Cash App accounts during the pandemic.
What Cash App does with your data
Here Cash App does better than its rivals. Apple's App Store label has no "Data Used to Track You" section at all, while PayPal and Venmo both list tracking data. Cash App links purchase history, physical address, user ID and device ID to you for Block's own advertising and marketing, and links financial info, contacts and contact details to you for running the service. That is a fairly normal list for a payments app that has to verify who you are.
The main privacy exposure is the $cashtag itself. Your display name and cashtag can be found by people who search for them, so think before using your full name.
Data breaches
On 4 April 2022 Block told investors that a former employee had downloaded reports of its subsidiary Cash App Investing on 10 December 2021, after their employment ended. The reports held full names and brokerage account numbers, and for some customers portfolio value, holdings and one day of trading activity. Block said they did not include usernames, passwords, Social Security numbers or dates of birth. It was an insider failure, but a limited one.
Is money in Cash App protected?
Not automatically. Cash App's terms say that if you have a Cash App prepaid card or a sponsored account, or sponsor one, your Cash App balance and savings are eligible for pass-through Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary insurance through Wells Fargo Bank or Sutton Bank, up to $250,000 per customer per bank, if conditions are met. Without one of those, the balance is not covered in the same way. FDIC insurance only applies if those banks fail, not if Block does.
How to use Cash App more safely
- Require your PIN or Face ID for payments in the app's security settings, and keep sign-in codes to yourself. No real Cash App employee asks for them.
- Contact support only through the app or cash.app. Ignore phone numbers in search results and social media.
- Never send money to unlock a "prize", "flip" cash or pay a seller you cannot meet.
- Report an unauthorized transfer in the app straight away and keep a record; federal rules give you dispute rights for those.
- Keep large sums in an insured bank account unless you know your balance qualifies for pass-through insurance.
How we scored it
Privacy (62) is Cash App's strongest factor, thanks to no cross-app tracking. The regulatory record (22) is the weakest, with the CFPB order, state and NYDFS penalties and 2026 settlements all tied to fraud and compliance failures. Scams and harmful content (35) and security (45) follow from the same CFPB findings.
Questions people ask
Is money in Cash App FDIC insured?
Only if you meet Block's conditions. Cash App's terms say that if you have a Cash App prepaid card or a sponsored account, or sponsor one, your Cash App and savings balances are eligible for pass-through Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary insurance through Wells Fargo Bank or Sutton Bank, up to $250,000 per customer per bank. It covers those banks failing, not Block.
Will Cash App refund me if I get scammed?
Payments you authorised to a scammer are usually not refunded. Unauthorized transfers, such as someone else taking over your account, are different, and federal rules require an investigation. The CFPB found in 2025 that Block had not handled those disputes properly and ordered it to change its process and pay redress.
Does Cash App have a customer service phone number?
Scammers have set up fake Cash App support lines for years, and the CFPB found that the lack of effective live support helped them. Only contact Cash App from inside the app or from cash.app, and never give anyone your sign-in code or PIN.
Was Cash App hacked?
In April 2022 Block said a former employee had downloaded Cash App Investing reports in December 2021 after leaving the company. They held names and brokerage account numbers, and for some customers portfolio values and holdings, but no passwords, Social Security numbers or dates of birth.
Can teenagers use Cash App?
Yes, through a sponsored account that a parent or guardian sets up. Cash App's terms let a child's sponsored account move to extra teen features from age 13 with the sponsor's approval, and Block can restrict spending on sponsored accounts. Teens face the same scams as adults, so set clear rules about never paying strangers.
