Is happn safe?

happn

happn is an average dating app for safety. Its whole idea is location, so it logs the places where you cross paths with other members, by default even when the app is closed, and it shares contact details, IDs and rough location for advertising. Chats open only after a mutual like, and no regulator has fined it.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    38 out of 100, Poor

Apple's label lists device ID used to track you and linked to you for third-party ads. Google Play says email, phone number, user IDs, approximate location and device IDs are shared with other companies for advertising, on an app that logs where you go and collects sexual orientation. The July 2026 policy says email and phone go hashed to social networks, with consent, to target its own ads.

  • Security30% of score

    50 out of 100, Weak

Google Play says data is encrypted in transit, and happn publishes a security.txt contact for researchers. We found no bug bounty, no End-to-end encryptionEncryption in which only the sender and the recipient can read a message. The company running the service cannot see its content.More in the glossary claim and no confirmed breach; its help page on data security gives no detail beyond outside hosting.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    60 out of 100, Fair

Deletion is in the app, you can pause your account, and "Share my crossing locations" and ad consents can be switched off under My data. The policy keeps your last position one month and crossings six months. But data stays a year after deletion, and uninstalling leaves you visible.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    46 out of 100, Weak

Chats open only after a mutual like, though a SuperCrush can carry one short note first. An optional video selfie certifies profiles. But the app shows people whose daily routes overlap with yours, and the crossing map reveals the places you share, which raises the stakes if a match turns into a stalker.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    87 out of 100, Excellent

We found no fine, order or published investigation that names happn, from France's CNIL or any other regulator. UFC-Que Choisir asked the CNIL to inspect happn in 2016, a consumer-group complaint more than ten years old. No large regulator appears to have examined the app.

Is happn safe?

happn is about as safe as the other big dating apps, with one difference you should understand before you sign up: the product is your location. happn shows you people you have physically crossed paths with, and to do that it records where you go, by default even when the app is closed. We score it 51/100, level with Tinder and a point above Plenty of Fish. It shares more data for ads than its privacy promise suggests, but chats open only after a mutual like, and no regulator has fined it.

happn is run by HAPPN SAS, a French company. Its App Store listing claims more than 140 million users, and Google Play shows over 100 million downloads.

How happn uses your location

The app's help centre is plain about it: "The app doesn't need to be open in order to work. With the smartphone in your pocket, the app continues to register all encounters as long as the geolocation is activated." Each time you pass another member, their profile goes into your timeline, and the happn Map shows where the crossing happened.

happn says other users never see your exact or live position. What they see is the place where you crossed, shown approximately and with a delay. That protects you from someone watching you move in real time. It does not stop someone from working out your routine. If a person keeps appearing at the same café near your office, or the same street near your home, the map tells them roughly where you spend your days, and it tells you the same about them.

The help pages say only that location is kept "for a limited amount of time", but the privacy policy is precise: your last position is stored for one month and your crossing points for six months. You can switch off "Share my crossing locations" in Settings so you do not appear on other people's maps, and you can stop location entirely, which leaves you only with profiles happn suggests rather than real crossings.

What happn shares for advertising

happn's App Store description says "privacy is our priority". Its own disclosures are more mixed. Apple's privacy label lists the device ID as data used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and as linked to you for third-party advertising. For happn's own marketing it links purchases, coarse location, email address, phone number and app activity to you. Precise location and "sensitive info" are linked to you for personalisation.

Google Play goes further. happn says it shares email address, user IDs, phone number, approximate location and device IDs with other companies, all for advertising or marketing. It collects sexual orientation and, optionally, fitness information. That is broad sharing for an app built on where you go.

The privacy policy, updated in July 2026, explains part of this. With your consent, happn sends your email address and phone number in hashed form to social networks, to keep its own ads away from you and to find people like you to advertise to. Ads inside the free app are personalised, again only with consent, on your age group, gender and city. You can withdraw both consents under My data, Manage my choices. Premium members see no ads.

Safety features and stalking risk

The strongest protection on happn is mutual opt-in: a conversation opens only when you have both liked each other, so the flood of unwanted messages common on free dating apps does not reach you. The one exception is a SuperCrush, which lets someone attach a short message before you match; refuse it and you stop crossing paths with that person. You can cross a profile off so you never see each other again, or block someone you have already talked to. happn's trust charter promises no fake profiles of its own and bans AI-written messages.

Profile certification is optional. You record a short video copying a head gesture, and happn compares it with your photos. It says the biometric data is deleted after the check, but the video itself is kept so it can re-certify you, and after account deletion it stays for a year with the rest of your data, citing French law on retaining data. You can ask for the video to be deleted earlier under Settings, My Data.

The risk that sets happn apart is physical. A match on happn is, by design, someone who moves through the same places as you. If a date goes badly, that person already knows the streets and venues where you are likely to be.

Security record

We found no confirmed breach of happn user data. Google Play says data is encrypted in transit, and happn publishes a security.txt file with a contact address for researchers. We found no paid bug bounty on HackerOne or YesWeHack, no published audit, and no claim that chats are End-to-end encryptionEncryption in which only the sender and the recipient can read a message. The company running the service cannot see its content.More in the glossary. happn's help answer on data security says only that "third-party specialists" host the data.

On the regulatory side, UFC-Que Choisir, the French consumer group, asked the CNIL in February 2016 to inspect happn over unclear data collection and transfers to a US analytics firm. We found no sanction or formal notice that followed, and the complaint is outside our ten-year window.

How to use happn more safely

  1. Set location to "While Using the App" on iPhone if you do not want happn logging your movements all day.
  2. Turn off "Share my crossing locations" if you would rather not appear on other people's maps.
  3. Turn location off before you get home, so repeated crossings near your door do not show people where you live.
  4. Certify your profile and prefer matches who have done the same, then video call before meeting.
  5. Delete your account, not just the app, when you leave: an uninstalled happn still shows your profile.

How we scored it

Privacy (38) is the weakest factor: happn tracks a device ID for ads and, on Android, shares contact details and approximate location with advertising partners while logging where you go. Scams and harmful content (46) reflects the real-world proximity risk, softened by mutual opt-in. Security (50) is middling, with no breach but little public detail. The regulatory record (87) is clean, though no large regulator seems to have examined the app.

Questions people ask

Can people on happn see where I live?

Not directly. happn shows other members the approximate place where you crossed paths, with a delay, not your live position. But if you keep crossing someone near your home or office, the pattern can give it away. Switch off "Share my crossing locations" in Settings, and avoid turning location on at home.

Does happn track me when the app is closed?

Yes, if you allow it. happn says the app keeps registering encounters with the phone in your pocket as long as location is on, even when the app is not open. On iPhone you can choose "While Using the App" instead of "Always", at the cost of fewer crossings.

Can someone message me on happn without my permission?

Only in a limited way. A chat opens when both people have liked each other. The exception is a SuperCrush, which can include a short message sent before you match; if you refuse it, you stop crossing paths with that person, and no conversation opens.

How do I delete my happn account?

In the app, tap your profile picture, then Settings, My Data and Delete my account. Cancel any Premium subscription in the App Store or Google Play first, because deleting the account does not stop billing. Uninstalling the app is not enough, since your profile stays visible.

Is happn owned by Match Group?

No. happn is run by HAPPN SAS, a French company, and is not one of Match Group's brands. That also means Match Group's 2025 FTC order does not cover it.
