Is HER safe?

HER

HER is weaker on privacy than most dating apps. Its App Store label lists precise location, email and phone number as data used to track you, and it shares data for targeted ads. It offers selfie verification and age checks, and a 2025 FTC order on its owner, Match Group, names HER.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    30 out of 100, Poor

Apple's label lists purchases, precise and coarse location, email, phone number, user and device IDs and advertising data used to track you, and almost the same set (with name instead of phone number) linked to you for third-party ads. HER says its ad disclosures "may be considered a sale/sharing" and names AppLovin for targeted ads.

  • Security30% of score

    48 out of 100, Weak

HER's policy says vendors encrypt data with at least TLS 1.2 in transit and AES at rest. We found no reported breach, but also no public bug bounty, security page or claim of End-to-end encryptionEncryption in which only the sender and the recipient can read a message. The company running the service cannot see its content.More in the glossary chats. Google Play says data is encrypted in transit.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    55 out of 100, Fair

Accounts can be deleted in the app, and an in-app switch opts you out of data sharing for ads. But retention is vague ("as long as necessary"), the March 2025 policy predates Match Group's purchase, and place names on profiles are public by default.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    46 out of 100, Weak

HER offers selfie verification, may ask for ID when an account looks fake, scans new users' selfies for age in some countries, checks US sex offender registries when it can and bans nudes. It runs no criminal background checks, and fake and harassing profiles remain a risk on queer apps.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    65 out of 100, Fair

The FTC order Match Group agreed in 2025 lists HER and weareher.com as covered services, so its rules on guarantees, cancellation and billing bind HER. The $14 million and the charges concerned Match.com, so we count an order without a fine.

Is HER safe?

HER is a reasonable place to meet other queer women and non-binary people, but it gives away more data for advertising than most dating apps. Its App Store label lists precise location, email address and phone number among the data used to track you across other companies' apps, an unusual list for an app whose users can face real harm if they are outed. On the plus side, it offers selfie verification and age checks. Against it, the FTC order Match Group signed in 2025 names HER. We score it 45/100, above Grindr at 43 and a point above OkCupid.

HER began as Dattch, founded by Robyn Exton, and its App Store listing says it has more than 14 million members. Match Group bought it in May 2025. The app is still published by Bloomer Inc., doing business as HER.

What HER shares for advertising

Most dating apps track something for ads. HER's label is broader than most. Under "Data Used to Track You", Apple lists purchase history, precise and coarse location, email address, phone number, user ID, device ID and advertising data. Almost the same set, with your name in place of your phone number, is linked to you for third-party advertising. Sensitive information is linked to you for analytics, personalisation and app functions.

The privacy policy, last updated in March 2025, names AppLovin as an ad vendor that selects targeted ads, Branch and Braze for marketing analytics and RevenueCat for subscriptions. It says HER does not sell personal data, but HER's own Your Privacy Choices page is more direct: "HER discloses personal information to third parties to enable personalized advertising. Such disclosures may be considered a sale/sharing of personal information under certain laws." The policy lists sexual orientation, sex life and precise location among the sensitive data it handles. On Google Play, HER says it shares sexual orientation with other companies for personalisation.

The policy was written before the Match Group deal and does not name Match Group. It does allow sharing with a "parent company" and affiliates, and HER's age-check page says those checks run on Match Group technology.

You can opt out of ad sharing in the app under Settings, Privacy Options. Do it on your first day.

Location and Places

HER collects precise location whenever you open the app with location services on, and shows other users a rough distance. A newer feature, Places, lets you add up to three favourite spots to your profile. The place name is public by default; a "Hide place name until matched" switch shows only the type of place, such as "a bar", until you match. Turn it on, or skip the feature, if your favourite spots are close to home.

Verification, age checks and harassment

HER offers selfie verification and may ask for a photo ID or a selfie if it suspects an account is fake, hacked or belongs to someone not allowed on the app. In some countries new users are asked for a face photo that is scanned to estimate whether they are over 18. HER keeps the scanned photo for three months and a hashed version with the age score for a year, and says the results can train its safety models.

HER's Colorado safety page says it does not run criminal background checks on all users, but checks state sex offender registries when it has enough information and bans offenders it finds. The community guidelines ban nudes and revenge posts. Queer apps attract a particular kind of abuse: fake profiles, harassment and people trying to identify members. Verification helps, but it only shows that photos match a live face.

Security and regulation

We found no reported breach of HER data. The policy says the cloud vendors that host HER's data use at least TLS 1.2 in transit and AES encryption at rest. We found no public bug bounty for HER (Match Group runs one on HackerOne for Tinder), no security page and no claim that chats are End-to-end encryptionEncryption in which only the sender and the recipient can read a message. The company running the service cannot see its content.More in the glossary.

On regulation, HER's record now runs through its owner. In 2025 Match Group settled FTC charges about Match.com's guarantees, cancellation and billing for $14 million. The stipulated order defines its covered services by name, and the list includes HER and weareher.com, so its rules on clear disclosures, easy cancellation and billing disputes apply to HER as well.

How to use HER more safely

  1. Opt out of ad sharing under Settings, Privacy Options, and choose "Ask App Not to Track" on iPhone.
  2. Turn on "Hide place name until matched" for every Place, or leave Places empty.
  3. Verify your own profile and ask matches to verify before you share personal details.
  4. Keep your surname, workplace and linked social accounts off your profile if being outed would put you at risk.
  5. Close your account in the app when you leave; deleting the app is not enough.

How we scored it

Privacy (30) is the weakest factor: HER's label lists precise location and contact details as data used to track you, and it shares data for targeted ads. Security (48) is middling, with no known breach but little public detail. Scams and harmful content (46) is helped by verification and age checks. The regulatory record (65) reflects Match Group's 2025 FTC order, which names HER as a covered service although the charges concerned Match.com.

Questions people ask

Is HER owned by Match Group?

Yes. Match Group bought HER in May 2025, and its annual report lists HER among its brands. The app is still run under the name Bloomer Inc., which appears as the seller on the App Store. Its privacy policy still names Bloomer Inc. as the company that handles your data.

How do I stop HER sharing my data for ads?

In the app, go to Settings and Privacy Options and opt out of the sale or sharing of your data, or use the form on HER's Your Privacy Choices page. On iPhone, also choose "Ask App Not to Track". HER says you may still see ads afterwards, but they will not be personalised.

Does HER verify that users are women?

No app can check identity that way. HER offers selfie verification, which checks that your photos match a live selfie, and may ask for a photo ID or selfie if it suspects an account is fake. Treat an unverified profile with care, and report anyone who misrepresents themselves.

Why is HER asking for a selfie when I sign up?

In some countries HER asks new users for a face photo to estimate whether they are over 18. HER says it uses Match Group's own technology, keeps the scanned photo for three months and a hashed copy with the age score for a year, and may use the results to train its safety models.

How do I delete my HER account?

Only in the app. On iPhone, go to My Profile, Settings, Account Details, Privacy Options and Delete my account and data. On Android, open Settings, then Support and Close Account. Deleting the app does not close the account, and cancelling Premium is a separate step in your app store.
