Is Meesho safe?

Meesho

Meesho is a workable way to buy cheap unbranded goods in India, and cash on delivery limits what you can lose. The catches are wide data sharing for advertising, a flood of fake Meesho sites and lucky-draw scams, uneven product quality, and a 2025 consumer-regulator penalty over misleading listings.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

Apple's label lists identifiers used to track you across other companies' apps. Google Play says Meesho shares contacts, approximate location, device IDs and app activity for advertising or marketing. The June 2025 policy also covers Aadhaar, PAN and income details.

  • Security30% of score

    60 out of 100, Fair

Google Play says data is encrypted in transit. Login relies on a phone number and OTP. Meesho reported nine police cases against more than 40 suspects over account takeover fraud in 2024. We found no confirmed breach of Meesho customer data. Since February 2026 its public HackerOne bug bounty has covered the app.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    48 out of 100, Weak

You can close your account in profile settings, but data deletion needs a request to the Grievance Officer, and the policy reserves wide sharing with affiliates, lending partners and advertisers.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

Meesho says it removed about 130 fake websites and apps and 18,000 social media accounts that used its brand in a year (2024), many for fake lucky draws. The CCPA found it carried walkie-talkie listings without legal approval details.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    80 out of 100, Good

The Central Consumer Protection Authority fined Meesho ₹10 lakh in December 2025 for misleading walkie-talkie listings and rejected its claim to be a passive intermediary. Meesho paid. No privacy or data protection order was found.

Is Meesho safe?

For buying cheap unbranded clothes and household goods with cash on delivery, Meesho is reasonably safe: if an order is bad, you are usually out a few hundred rupees, not your bank balance. The app itself is less reassuring. It shares more of your data for advertising than most shopping apps we have scored, scammers copy the brand constantly, and India's consumer regulator fined it in December 2025. We score it 51/100, between Temu (42) and Flipkart (55).

Meesho is now one of India's largest marketplaces. Its IPO filing put annual transacting users at about 234 million for the 12 months to September 2025, many of them first-time online shoppers in smaller towns. That audience is exactly why fraudsters use its name.

What data does Meesho share?

This is the weakest part of the app. Apple's privacy label says Meesho uses identifiers to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies, and links your device ID, search history, contact details and app usage to your identity. The Google Play data safety section goes further: it says Meesho shares contacts, approximate location, device IDs and app interactions with other companies for advertising or marketing, and shares SMS data for app functions. Few shopping apps declare that they share your address book for marketing.

The privacy policy, last updated on 23 June 2025, is broad. It lists information Meesho "may" collect such as Aadhaar and PAN numbers, monthly income, marital status and number of children, and says the app can read metadata from photos, audio, video and contacts on your phone. It allows sharing with group companies, advertisers, lending partners and marketing channels. It says Meesho does not use information that personally identifies you for interest-based ads, but advertising companies may use your device ID to follow your app use.

India's Digital Personal Data Protection Rules were notified on 14 November 2025, and the main consent and notice duties phase in over 18 months, so until about May 2027 Meesho's policy is not yet tested against them. The law allows penalties of up to ₹250 crore for weak security safeguards.

Fake Meesho sites and lucky draws

The most common Meesho fraud does not happen inside the app. Meesho said in November 2024 that it had taken down about 130 fake websites and apps and more than 18,000 social media accounts that used its name for fake customer support, job offers and lucky draws, and that the Delhi High Court ordered domain registrars to disable fraudulent sites. It also reported nine police cases against more than 40 suspects for account takeover fraud in Kolkata and Ranchi. These figures come from Meesho itself.

The pattern is familiar: a letter, SMS or WhatsApp message says you won a car or cash in a Meesho draw and asks for a "registration fee", ID documents or a UPI payment. Meesho does not run prize draws this way. Fake "customer care" numbers found through web search work the same way and often ask you to install a screen-sharing app.

Are Meesho products safe?

Quality is uneven, which is the price of the low prices. Most sellers are small businesses listing unbranded goods, and photos can differ from what arrives. The one regulator finding so far is about listings, not quality in general. In December 2025 the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) ordered Meesho to pay ₹10 lakh because walkie-talkies were sold on the platform until May 2025 without the government approval details buyers need to use them legally. Meesho argued that sellers had put them under "Kids & Toys" and that it removed them; the CCPA rejected that, saying a platform that controls onboarding and listings is not a passive intermediary. It also ordered regular self-audits. Meesho paid.

Be more careful with electrical items, chargers, cosmetics and children's toys, where a cheap fake can cause harm.

How to shop on Meesho safely

  1. Install Meesho only from the App Store or Google Play, and ignore links in SMS or WhatsApp that claim to be Meesho offers or prizes.
  2. Use cash on delivery or pay inside the app. Never pay a courier or a "seller" outside the order, and never scan a QR code to receive a refund: QR codes send money.
  3. Get help only through the Help Centre in the app, not from numbers found online.
  4. Deny the contacts permission, and allow location only while you use the app.
  5. Check the seller rating and recent photo reviews before buying anything that plugs in or goes on skin.
  6. If you lose money, call 1930 or report it at cybercrime.gov.in at once.

How we scored it

Regulatory record (80) is Meesho's strongest factor: one small consumer-protection penalty and no privacy order. Privacy (40) shares the lowest score, because the app declares tracking identifiers and shares contacts and location for advertising. Scams and harmful content, also at 40, reflects the volume of brand impersonation and uneven listings, while security (60) credits encryption, a clean breach record and a paid bug bounty but notes the OTP-only login and account takeover cases.

Questions people ask

Is Meesho a real company or a fraud?

Meesho is a real Bengaluru marketplace with more than 200 million shoppers a year, and it raised money in an Indian stock market listing in 2025. The fraud risk comes from copies. Fake Meesho websites, WhatsApp numbers and letters promise lucky-draw prizes or jobs, and Meesho says it has had about 130 fake sites and apps taken down. Meesho does not run lucky draws by post or WhatsApp.

Does Meesho sell fake or duplicate products?

Most Meesho goods are unbranded clothing, home items and accessories from small sellers, so quality varies a lot. Branded items at very low prices deserve suspicion, as on any open marketplace. In 2025 India's consumer regulator found Meesho had carried walkie-talkie listings without the required approval details and fined it ₹10 lakh.

Is cash on delivery on Meesho safe?

Cash on delivery means you never give card or UPI details to the app, which limits what a scam can take. Pay only the amount shown in your Meesho order, and do not pay a courier extra fees or scan a QR code a delivery person shows you outside the order.

Why does Meesho ask for contacts permission?

Meesho's Google Play listing says it collects contacts as an optional item and shares them for advertising or marketing. You can refuse the permission in your phone settings and still shop. Precise location is optional too; you can type your delivery address instead.

How do I delete my Meesho account?

Meesho's privacy policy says you can close your account from the profile settings, and that deleting your personal data needs a request to its Grievance Officer. Meesho may keep some data for as long as Indian law requires, for example order and tax records.
