Is Nextdoor safe?

Nextdoor

Nextdoor is safer than most social apps for meeting real neighbours, because members verify their address and use real names. That design is also its privacy cost. Apple's label lists your home address and email as data used to track you for ads, and fake tradespeople and sellers still get through.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Privacy30% of score

    33 out of 100, Poor

Apple's label lists physical address, email, user ID, device ID and ad data used to track you, and sensitive info, contacts and precise location linked to you. The 2026 policy shares hashed emails and ad IDs with ad partners, and Google Play lists web browsing history collected for ads.

  • Security30% of score

    58 out of 100, Fair

Nextdoor runs a private HackerOne bug bounty and checks new members' addresses, and Google Play says data is encrypted in transit. We found no reported breach. The policy mentions Two-factor authenticationSigning in with a second proof of identity on top of your password, such as a code from an app, a security key or a passkey.More in the glossary "where appropriate", but we found no member setting for it in the help centre.

  • Transparency and control15% of score

    58 out of 100, Fair

The policy is dated and specific, members can choose how much of their name and address neighbours see and who sees each post, and data can be downloaded. Opting out of personalised ads is offered only in some jurisdictions, and contact uploads put non-members' details on file.

  • Scams and harmful content15% of score

    50 out of 100, Weak

Real names and address checks raise the bar, registered sex offenders are blocked in the US, and Nextdoor says under 1% of 2025 content was reported as hurtful. But fake tradespeople, sale scams and identity theft through local posts are well documented, and safety posts have long drawn bias complaints.

  • Regulatory record10% of score

    86 out of 100, Excellent

We found no privacy or consumer-protection fine or order naming Nextdoor. Dutch users complained in 2019 about invitation letters sent in their names, but the Dutch regulator said it could not act. No regulator appears to have examined the app, so it sits in the 85 to 88 band.

Is Nextdoor safe?

For keeping up with your street, mostly yes. Nextdoor checks that members really live in the neighbourhood they join, asks for real names and blocks registered sex offenders in the US, so it has fewer anonymous trolls than most social networks. The trade-off is privacy. The app knows your home address by design, Apple's label says that address and your email are used to track you for advertising, and scammers have learned that a neighbourly tone opens wallets. We score it 52/100.

That puts it just above Reddit (49) and well above Facebook (37), with a cleaner regulatory record than either but weaker privacy than Reddit, where you can stay anonymous.

What does Nextdoor do with your address?

To join, you give your name, email and home address. The October 2026 privacy policy says Nextdoor confirms accounts by checking third-party data and public records, verification codes or your phone's location, and may ask for ID in some cases.

The data then feeds an advertising business. Apple's privacy label lists five kinds of data used to track you across other companies' apps and sites: physical address, email address, user ID, device ID and advertising data. Data linked to you includes precise location, contacts, search history and a category Apple calls sensitive info. Google Play's data safety section adds web browsing history, collected for advertising.

Your neighbourhood, zip code and business searchesBooking and service partners
Address books you syncKept by Nextdoor, including names, emails and phone numbers of people who never joined
Optional race or ethnicity survey answersUsed, the policy says, only to study bias on the platform

Members in some jurisdictions can opt out of personalised ads. Everyone else cannot. Nextdoor also ignores browser Do Not Track signals.

Scams and neighbourly trust

Nextdoor's verification gives posts a trust that scammers exploit. BuzzFeed News documented the pattern in 2019: "contractors" who took deposits and vanished, a car-sale scheme paid in eBay gift cards that police in Fishers, Indiana, warned about, and an Oakland arrest of a woman who used a nanny's details from Nextdoor to steal her identity. A visible street address also tells a fraudster exactly who needs a roof fixed.

Nextdoor's own numbers are reassuring on tone. Its 2025 transparency report says less than 1% of content was reported as hurtful and less than 0.5% as harmful, and that new verification steps and machine learning have improved how it blocks fraud and account takeovers. Its 2019 Kindness Reminder, which prompts people before they post a hostile reply, cut negative comments by about 20% in tests. These are company figures, not independent audits.

The app has also faced years of complaints that safety and crime posts single out people of colour. Its privacy policy and help pages now point to bias research and anti-racism resources, but moderation still rests heavily on neighbours and volunteer leads.

Security and regulators

Nextdoor runs a private bug bounty on HackerOne, listed in its security.txt file, and Google Play says data is encrypted in transit. We found no reported breach of member data. The privacy policy mentions Two-factor authenticationSigning in with a second proof of identity on top of your password, such as a code from an app, a security key or a passkey.More in the glossary "where appropriate", but we could not find a setting that lets members turn it on.

No regulator has fined or ordered Nextdoor over privacy or consumer protection that we could find. The closest episode came in the Netherlands in 2019, when residents received printed invitation letters signed with neighbours' names and addresses, which some of those neighbours said they never approved. The Dutch data protection authority confirmed complaints but said it could not act against a company not based there.

How to use Nextdoor more safely

  1. In your privacy settings, limit how much of your name and address appears on your profile and next to your posts.
  2. Post to your own neighbourhood, not to "Anyone", when you mention being away or a new purchase.
  3. Do not sync your address book. It uploads friends' details who never signed up.
  4. Hire tradespeople only after checking a licence and reviews off the app, and never pay a large deposit up front.
  5. For For Sale and Free deals, meet in a public place and refuse gift cards, wire transfers or payment before you see the item.

How we scored it

Privacy (33) is the weakest factor: your home address and email are tracked for ads, and contact uploads reach people who never joined. Scams and harmful content (50) balances real address checks against well-documented local fraud. The regulatory record (86) is the strongest factor, with no fines, though no regulator has examined the app closely.

Questions people ask

Can people on Nextdoor see my address?

Neighbours in your area can see your name and, depending on your settings, your street or full address. Nextdoor lets you limit how much of your name and address appears on your profile and next to your posts. Check this setting before you post about being away, a new purchase or a job you need done.

Does Nextdoor sell your data?

Its policy describes sharing rather than selling. It shares hashed email addresses and advertising identifiers with ad partners so they can show you targeted ads on Nextdoor and elsewhere, and Apple's label says your home address and email are used to track you. Opting out of personalised ads is available only in some places.

Are there scams on Nextdoor?

Yes. Reported cases include fake contractors who take a deposit and vanish, sellers who ask for gift cards, and a 2019 Oakland case where a woman used a nanny's details from Nextdoor to steal her identity. Address checks make fake accounts harder, not impossible. Never pay a deposit or use gift cards for someone you have only met on the app.

How old do you have to be to use Nextdoor?

The US terms bar children under 13 and anyone under 18 in Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Maryland, Connecticut and Nebraska. The App Store rates the app 13+ and Google Play rates it Teen.

Is Nextdoor safe for reporting crime?

It is useful for local alerts, and Nextdoor now carries official alerts from partners such as the US Geological Survey. Posts about "suspicious" people have long drawn complaints of racial profiling, and Nextdoor added prompts such as its 2019 Kindness Reminder to cut hostile replies. For an emergency, call the police first.
