Is Remind safe?
Remind
Remind is a reasonably safe way for teachers, students and families to message, with no ads, no data sales and phone numbers kept private. The gaps are account security, with login codes only on new devices, and the free Remind Chat tier, where no school administrator sees the conversations.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Privacy30% of score
70 out of 100, GoodApple's label lists no tracking and no advertising use, but links contact info, messages, identifiers, search history and usage data to you. Google Play lists payment info, crash logs and app interactions as shared with service providers. The March 2026 policy rules out selling data or sharing it for targeted ads.
Security30% of score
70 out of 100, GoodData is encrypted in transit (Google Play) and Remind holds an ISO 27001 certificate. Remind emails or texts a code at login from a new device or after 90 days, but offers no two-step login for every sign-in. The HackerOne programme in its security.txt has no public page. No breach found.
Transparency and control15% of score
72 out of 100, GoodUsers can delete their account in the app, with data removed within 90 days, and export message history on the web. Inactive under-13 accounts are deleted after 12 months. A teacher's free-tier content passes to the district if it later buys ParentSquare.
Scams and harmful content15% of score
76 out of 100, GoodContact is limited to members of a class, with report and block tools and replies teachers can switch off. Under-13s need a parent's approval, cannot join classes outside the US and get a parent added to every class. Free Remind Chat classes have no administrator reading transcripts.
Regulatory record10% of score
87 out of 100, ExcellentWe found no fine, order or regulator investigation naming Remind or ParentSquare from the FTC, a US state or a European data protection authority. Remind belongs to iKeepSafe's COPPA Safe Harbor, a voluntary programme, not a regulator review.
Is Remind safe?
Mostly, yes. Remind is a messaging service for classes and groups: teachers send announcements, and families and older students can reply or chat one to one. It shows no ads, its privacy policy rules out selling data or sharing it for targeted ads, and nobody sees anyone else's phone number. We score it 73/100, level with ClassDojo (73) and ahead of Google Classroom (69).
Two things hold it back. Login codes are asked for only on a new device or after 90 days, not at every sign-in, and the free version, Remind Chat, runs without a school administrator who can read transcripts.
Who runs Remind now?
Remind belongs to ParentSquare, another US school messaging company, and its policies are now written by ParentSquare, Inc. ParentSquare's own app, which families get when their school or district buys ParentSquare, had about 99,800 US ratings and ranked eighth among free Education apps on the US App Store on 28 October 2026. In a post on 30 September 2026, Remind set out a split. Remind Chat stays free for individual K-12 teachers. Remind Hub, the paid version, is now sold only to groups outside K-12 schools, such as sports clubs, camps and nonprofits. K-12 schools and districts looking for a new system are sent to ParentSquare, and districts that sync class lists automatically can keep using Remind Hub until September 2027.
For families this matters in one way: who oversees the conversations. On Hub, the school or organisation is the customer and administrators can see transcripts. On Chat, it is the teacher's own account.
What data Remind collects
Apple's privacy label lists no tracking and no advertising or marketing use. It does link a long list of data to the user: contact info, messages and other user content, identifiers, search history, usage data, diagnostics and "other data". Google Play adds that payment info, crash logs and app interactions are shared with other companies, for app functions and analytics. Contacts, photos, videos, files and voice recordings are optional.
The Remind Chat privacy policy, updated on 25 March 2026, says ParentSquare does not sell personal data or share it for targeted ads, and does not build student profiles for advertising. It shares data with service providers for hosting, support, analytics and message delivery, and keeps a public list of them. It collects city-level location to secure the service and may send marketing emails, which you can stop with the unsubscribe link.
Children under 13
Remind's rules for younger children are stricter than many messaging apps. Every student account needs a birth date, and an account without one is treated as under 13. For a child under 13, Remind asks for a parent's email or phone number, sends the parent a request to approve, and deletes the child's account if the parent does not respond. The parent is then added to all of the child's classes.
Under-13s can receive announcements but cannot create classes, set a profile picture or be added to a class directly. They can only join classes linked to a verified school, and since Remind has verified only US schools, they cannot join classes anywhere else. If an under-13 account goes unused for 12 months, Remind deletes it.
Messages between adults and students
The real question for parents is private messaging between an adult and a teenager. Remind allows one-to-one chats inside a class, and teachers can switch replies off. Any user can block another member of the same class or school, and report someone for breaking the community guidelines; Remind says its team usually answers within one business day. Remind also publishes an anti-bullying policy.
What Remind cannot give on the free tier is a third party watching. A coach or teacher running a free Remind Chat class is not supervised by a school administrator inside Remind. Ask whether a club or school uses Hub with administrator access, or keep the parent in the class.
Account security
Data travels encrypted, according to Google Play, and Remind says it holds ISO 27001 certification for its security management. We found no reported breach. Remind sends a verification code by email or text when you log in from a new device or browser, or for the first time in 90 days, and it notifies every address on the account when a phone number or email is added or removed. That makes a stolen password alone harder to use from another device. There is no setting to require a code at every sign-in, though, and no authenticator app option. Remind's security.txt file sends researchers to a HackerOne programme that has no public page, and to a security email address.
How to use Remind safely
- Use a unique password for Remind and keep the email and phone on the account secure, since the login codes go there.
- Join your child's classes as a parent, even for teenagers, so you see the same announcements.
- Ask whether the class runs on Remind Hub, with administrator oversight, or on a teacher's free Remind Chat account.
- Block and report anyone who misuses messages, and email the conversation history to Remind support if you need to show what was said.
- Delete the account in the app's settings when the school year or season ends, if you will not need it again.
How we scored it
The clean regulatory record (87) is Remind's highest factor, followed by scams and harmful content (76), which rests on closed classes and parent approval for under-13s. Privacy (70) and security (70) are the lowest. Privacy reflects a long list of data linked to accounts, with no ad tracking; security reflects login codes only on new devices and no public bug bounty, against a clean breach record.
Questions people ask
Can teachers see my phone number on Remind?
No. Remind lets teachers, students and parents text and call each other through the service without showing personal phone numbers. Your number is stored in your account, and Apple's privacy label lists contact info as linked to you, but other users do not see it.
Is Remind safe for kids under 13?
It has extra rules for them. A student under 13 must give a birth date and a parent's contact, the parent must approve the account, and the parent is added to every class to receive and reply to messages. Under-13s cannot join classes outside the United States, and their accounts are deleted after 12 months without use.
Can school administrators read Remind messages?
On Remind Hub, the paid version for schools and organisations, administrators can see message transcripts. On free Remind Chat classes run by individual teachers or coaches, no administrator has that view. Ask the school which version a class uses.
Is Remind being replaced by ParentSquare?
Partly. Since September 2026, ParentSquare, which owns Remind, sends K-12 schools and districts looking for a new system to ParentSquare. Remind Chat stays free for individual teachers, and Remind Hub continues for groups outside K-12 schools. Districts that use automated rostering can keep Remind Hub until September 2027.
How do I delete my Remind account?
In the app, tap the gear next to your name, open Your account and choose Delete account at the bottom; the website has the same option under Account settings. Remind says it removes your data from its servers within 90 days. If a school created your account, ask it to remove you from its roster, or the account can be created again.
