Is TikTok Shop safe?
TikTok Shop
TikTok Shop's own checkout gives buyers more protection than most social marketplaces, with free returns on many items and a 90-day money-back guarantee. The weak points are counterfeit and unsafe goods from third-party sellers, influencer videos that sell them, and the TikTok app's broad data collection.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Privacy30% of score
28 out of 100, PoorTikTok Shop runs inside the TikTok app, whose App Store label lists contact info and identifiers used to track you, and purchases, financial info, precise location, contacts and browsing history linked to you. Orders add your address and payment details.
Security30% of score
55 out of 100, FairPayments go through TikTok's own checkout, and 2-step verification is available. Transparency and control15% of score
58 out of 100, FairOrder history, returns and refunds are handled in the app, and TikTok's data download and deletion tools cover Shop data. Shopping videos and LIVE sales appear in the main feed, and recommendations are personalised by default.
Scams and harmful content15% of score
40 out of 100, WeakWhich? found 3 of 5 heaters bought on TikTok dangerously unsafe (2024) and 5 of 6 TikTok Shop cosmetics likely fake (2025). More than 30 UK product safety notices since 2024 name TikTok. A 90-day money-back guarantee and an 18+ rule limit the harm.
Regulatory record10% of score
84 out of 100, GoodWe found no fine or order that names TikTok Shop from the EU Commission, UK regulators or the FTC. TikTok's own large fines are scored on the TikTok page and count here only as context, as does Indonesia's 2023 trade ban on shopping inside social media apps.
Is TikTok Shop safe?
Buying on TikTok Shop is safer than it looks, as long as you pay through its own checkout. Orders get a 90-day money-back guarantee if the item is defective, damaged or lost, and TikTok says it turned away 1.4 million would-be sellers in the first half of 2025. What you buy is the bigger risk: consumer group Which? has found unsafe heaters and likely counterfeit cosmetics from TikTok Shop sellers, and UK product safety officials have issued more than 30 notices about goods sold there since May 2024. Add the TikTok app's heavy data collection and the score settles at 48/100.
TikTok Shop is not a separate app for buyers. It lives inside TikTok, as a Shop tab and as product links in videos and LIVE streams. TikTok says it launched in Southeast Asia in 2021 and has since expanded to the UK, the US, Europe, Latin America and Japan.
Fakes and unsafe products
Which? has tested TikTok Shop goods several times. In February 2024 it tested eight electric heaters, five bought on TikTok and three on Temu, and found only one both safe and legal to sell in the UK. Three of the five TikTok heaters were dangerously unsafe. One heater bought on TikTok was a fire and explosion risk and could give electric shocks; Which? found 16 sellers listing it, with 223 sales quoted. Five TikTok videos promoting the risky heaters were marked as paid partnerships or commission paid, with more than 100,000 views between them.
In July 2025 Which? bought 34 branded cosmetics from third-party sellers on Amazon, eBay, TikTok Shop and Vinted. It judged five of the six from TikTok Shop likely to be counterfeit, including a Maybelline mascara for £8.07 with the wrong label. TikTok told Which? that counterfeits are strictly prohibited and that it blocked more than 7 million listings in the second half of 2024. The US Trade Representative's 2025 review of notorious markets also named TikTok Shop among social shopping platforms where brand owners report high volumes of counterfeits, without listing it as a notorious market.
UK officials see the same problem. A search of the government's product safety database finds 34 notices naming TikTok between May 2024 and September 2026. They include a rechargeable hot water bottle with a serious fire risk (January 2026) and a hooded baby sleeping bag that posed a suffocation risk (December 2025). In both cases TikTok removed the listing. That shows the system working after the fact, and also that unsafe goods got onto the platform in the first place.
What TikTok says it does
TikTok publishes a TikTok Shop Safety Report. The latest we found covers January to June 2025:
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Seller applications declined | 1.4 million |
| Listings rejected before going live | More than 70 million |
| Sellers removed | More than 700,000 |
| Products removed after listing | More than 200,000 |
| User reports reviewed | More than 900,000 |
| Recall announcements handled | More than 4,600 |
New sellers must submit identity and business documents and go through a probation period with limits on daily orders and listings. Shoppers, sellers and creators must be 18 or over, and sellers and creators verify their age with a passport, driving licence or another method. These are TikTok's own figures, not independent audits.
Buyer protection and refunds
The protection is the best part of TikTok Shop. TikTok says it offers a free money-back guarantee for 90 days on items that are defective, damaged or lost by the carrier, free returns on millions of items, and in the US return drop-offs at 55,000 locations using only a QR code. On eligible orders, the refund arrives once the return is dropped off. That is far more than a buyer gets on Facebook Marketplace, where most deals are paid outside the platform.
It only works if the money goes through TikTok's checkout. Scammers on TikTok, as on any social app, use comments and direct messages to offer "cheaper" deals by bank transfer, gift card or a payment link. Those payments are outside the guarantee.
The data you hand over
Shopping on TikTok means using TikTok, so the app's privacy label applies: contact info and identifiers are used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and purchases, financial info, precise location, contacts, browsing and search history are linked to you. An order adds your name, address, phone number and payment details. What you watch and what you buy feed the same recommendations, so a few shopping videos can turn into a feed full of product pitches. The TikTok page covers the China data rulings and the record EU fines in detail.
How to shop safely on TikTok
- Pay only through TikTok Shop's checkout, and never by bank transfer, gift card or a link sent in a message.
- Check the seller's rating, number of sales and shop age before ordering, especially for branded beauty products and electronics.
- Treat plug-in heaters, chargers, hair tools and baby sleep products from unknown brands with extra caution, and look for a UK or EU address on the listing.
- Report a faulty or missing item from the order page within the guarantee window.
- Remove saved cards from a shared family phone, and turn on 2-step verification in TikTok's security settings.
How we scored it
Privacy (28) is the TikTok app's score, since TikTok Shop has no separate app for buyers. Scams and harmful content (40) is held down by fakes and unsafe goods but helped by the 90-day guarantee and the 18+ rule. The regulatory record (84) counts only decisions that name the Shop, and we found none; TikTok's €875 million in Irish fines are scored on the TikTok page. For a comparison with another app shipping cheap goods from China, see Temu.
Questions people ask
Does TikTok Shop give refunds?
Yes, for orders paid through TikTok Shop's checkout. TikTok says it offers a free money-back guarantee for 90 days if an item is defective, damaged or lost by the carrier, and free returns on millions of items. Request the refund in the order page in the app, not through a link or chat sent by the seller.
Are products on TikTok Shop fake?
Some are. Which? bought six cosmetics from TikTok Shop sellers in 2025 and judged five likely to be counterfeit. TikTok says counterfeits are banned and that it rejected more than 70 million listings in the first half of 2025, mostly fakes or unsafe products. Be most careful with branded beauty products, electronics and anything far below its normal price.
Can under-18s use TikTok Shop?
No. TikTok says shoppers, sellers and creators on TikTok Shop must be at least 18, and sellers and creators have to verify their age with ID. Teenagers can still see shopping videos in the main feed, so parents should check that no payment card is saved on a teen's account.
Is it safe to buy from a TikTok LIVE sale?
The checkout is the same as for any TikTok Shop order, so the money-back guarantee applies if you pay in the app. The risk is pressure, as countdowns and "only 3 left" claims push quick decisions. Never pay a seller who asks you to move to WhatsApp, Telegram or a bank transfer for a better price.
Why are TikTok Shop prices so cheap?
Many sellers ship direct from factories, often in China, and TikTok has funded discounts to grow the Shop. Cheap is not the same as unsafe, but UK product safety notices since 2024 have named TikTok listings of heaters, hot water bottles and baby products with fire, shock or suffocation risks.
