Is Videoleap safe?
Videoleap
Videoleap, Lightricks' video editor, edits on your phone and asks before it trains AI on your clips. Its App Store label tracks your email, user ID and ad data, AI effects send footage to Lightricks' cloud, and its public template feed adds strangers and content that may stay up after you delete your account.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Privacy30% of score
43 out of 100, WeakApple's label lists email, other contact info, a user ID and advertising data as used to track you, and links your photos, videos and audio to you. The shared Lightricks policy (October 2025) names ad SDKs from AppLovin, Meta, TikTok and Snapchat. Google Play's "no data shared" label understates that policy.
Security30% of score
56 out of 100, FairNo breach of Videoleap or Lightricks data in Have I Been Pwned and no CVE in the US vulnerability database. Projects are saved on the device, but AI effects upload footage to Lightricks' cloud for up to 30 days. We found no bug bounty, no Two-factor authenticationSigning in with a second proof of identity on top of your password, such as a code from an app, a security key or a passkey.More in the glossary login and no audit report that names Videoleap.
Transparency and control15% of score
48 out of 100, WeakAI-training consent can be withdrawn in the app, and US users can opt out of the "sale" of data used for ads. The terms take a perpetual, irrevocable licence to your content, deletion goes through a form to the DPO, and the policy warns that public posts may not be deleted with your account.
Scams and harmful content15% of score
64 out of 100, FairUsers publish templates to a community feed, follow other creators and can block or report them; Lightricks says it scans every upload with automated moderation. The App Store rates it 13+ for user-generated content and suggestive themes, which matches the terms' minimum age of 13.
Regulatory record10% of score
83 out of 100, GoodWe found no privacy or consumer-protection fine or order naming Videoleap or Lightricks. King v. Lightricks, an Illinois biometric privacy class action whose settlement notice names Videoleap among four Lightricks apps, settled in 2024 for $4.485 million without a court finding; as a lawsuit it counts only as context.
Is Videoleap safe?
Videoleap is a reasonable choice for adults and older teens who want a capable phone video editor, but it collects more than an editor needs and its social side brings strangers into the app. We score it 55/100, the same as its sister app Photoleap and a little below Facetune (58). Editing itself runs on your phone. The cost is in three places: Apple's label says your email and user ID are used to track you, every AI effect sends footage to Lightricks' servers, and templates you publish to the feed are public.
Videoleap is a big earner for a niche app. On 28 October 2026 it sat in Apple's top 100 grossing Photo & Video apps in 20 of the 24 countries we check, including 25th in the UAE, 34th in the UK and 38th in the US. It has about 146,000 US ratings and more than 10 million Android downloads.
Two store labels that disagree
Apple's privacy label for Videoleap lists email address, other contact info, user ID and advertising data under "Data Used to Track You", which means they can be combined with data from other companies' apps and sites for ads. The label also links your photos, videos, audio and other content to your identity, for analytics and personalisation as well as for the app to work.
Google Play tells a different story. Its data safety section says Videoleap shares no user data with other companies. Lightricks' own privacy policy, which covers every Lightricks app and was last modified on 22 October 2025, does not support that. It lists software kits from AppsFlyer, AppLovin, Meta, Firebase, TikTok, Braze and Snapchat, among others, and says that giving data to advertising networks counts as a "sale" under US state laws. We score privacy on the policy and the Apple label, not on the Play page.
The policy also says Lightricks may infer age group, gender and skin tone from your images. If you sign in to several Lightricks apps, the company can recognise you across them and combine what each one collects.
What the AI tools send to the cloud
Videoleap's newer features are AI effects and AI templates that restyle your clips or remove objects from them. These run on Lightricks' servers. Footage you use for them is stored in the Lightricks Cloud for up to 30 days, and finished outputs stay there until you ask for them to be deleted. AI training is opt-in, and you can withdraw consent later in the app's privacy settings.
Two clauses go further. The policy says uploads are kept longer if you agree to let Lightricks tools build "Face and Voice Recognition Models" from them, and the terms say OpenAI's ChatGPT is built into Lightricks' apps. Videoleap's label lists audio data linked to you, so voice-overs and recordings are in scope.
On security, the record is clean but thin. We found no breach of Lightricks user data in Have I Been Pwned and no published vulnerability for Videoleap. You sign in with Apple, Google, Facebook or email, and we found no Two-factor authenticationSigning in with a second proof of identity on top of your password, such as a code from an app, a security key or a passkey.More in the glossary option, no bug bounty and no audit that names Videoleap.
The template feed and strangers
Unlike Photoleap and Facetune, Videoleap is partly a social app. Its listing invites you to remake trending edits from a community feed, connect with other creators and share your own templates. Apple therefore rates it 13+ and flags user-generated content, social media and infrequent mature or suggestive themes. Lightricks' terms set the same minimum age, so the store rating and the rules match.
Lightricks' community guidelines, last updated in February 2024, ban nudity, harassment, hate speech, self-harm content and fake giveaways, and tell users to block or report people who break them. Lightricks says it runs automated moderation on every upload and has humans review user reports. That is a reasonable set of tools for a feed of short templates, though we found no figures on how much it removes.
The bigger catch is permanence. You can delete a template from your profile, but the privacy policy warns that information you make public "may not be able to be deleted" even after you delete the app and your account. The terms also give Lightricks a worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable and sublicensable licence to everything you upload or make, including your likeness.
The Illinois biometric case
In 2024 Lightricks agreed to pay $4.485 million to settle King v. Lightricks, a class action in Sangamon County, Illinois. It claimed that the company's apps analysed users' faces without the written consent Illinois' biometric privacy law requires. The settlement notice names four Lightricks apps (Facetune, Photoleap, Videoleap and LTX Studio) and covers everyone in Illinois whose image or voice one of them analysed between 30 September 2017 and 22 November 2024. It is not a finding of wrongdoing, and we found no regulator action against Videoleap or Lightricks.
How to use Videoleap more safely
- Tap "Ask App Not to Track" on iPhone, and sign in with Apple's Hide My Email rather than Facebook.
- Give the app access to selected photos and videos, not the whole library.
- Decline AI-training and face or voice model requests, or withdraw them under the app's privacy settings.
- Export finished videos instead of publishing templates, especially for teens or for clips that show children.
- If you posted templates, delete them from your profile before you delete your account.
- Cancel Pro in your Apple ID or Google Play subscriptions at least a day before renewal.
How we scored it
Regulatory record (83) is Videoleap's strongest factor: no fine or order, with the Illinois settlement counted only as context. Privacy (43) is the weakest, because Apple's label tracks your email, user ID and ad data and the shared policy feeds ad networks. Scams and harmful content (64) credits matching age rules, reporting and upload moderation, but loses points for a public feed whose posts may outlive your account.
Questions people ask
Does Videoleap upload my videos?
Ordinary editing happens on your phone, and projects are saved in the app on that device. AI effects and AI templates are different. Lightricks' privacy policy says photos and videos used for effects go to the Lightricks Cloud and are kept for up to 30 days, unless you have agreed to let the company keep them for AI training.
Can other people see my Videoleap videos?
Only what you publish there. Templates you publish to the community feed are public and appear on your profile, where you can delete them. The privacy policy warns that information you make public may not be deleted even if you delete the app and your account.
Is Videoleap safe for kids?
The App Store rates it 13+ and Lightricks' terms set 13 as the minimum age, with under-18s told to review the terms with a parent. The editor itself is low-risk. The community feed is where teens can meet strangers' content and accounts, so younger users are better off exporting their edits without browsing or posting to the feed.
Does Videoleap use my videos to train AI?
Only with your consent, according to the October 2025 privacy policy. Without it, uploads for AI effects are deleted within 30 days. If you agreed earlier, you can withdraw consent in the app's privacy settings.
Is Videoleap free?
The app is free to download, and anything made only with free tools can be exported without paying. Tools marked with a crown need Videoleap Pro. US App Store prices for subscriptions and unlimited access range from $4.99 to $69.99, and Apple, not Lightricks, handles refunds for purchases made on an iPhone.
