Is Chime safe?
Chime
Chime is an app, not a bank. Your money is held at The Bancorp Bank or Stride Bank and is FDIC-insured on a pass-through basis, which works only if the records are right. Both banks are well capitalised but small, Chime has paid regulators over slow refunds and customer service, and it plans to buy Stride in 2027.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Capital strength25% of score
60 out of 100, FairChime has no bank capital of its own. The risk is concentration, since a large share of each bank's funding comes from fintech programmes.

California's DFPI fined it $2.5 million in February 2024 over customer service, and in 2021 it settled claims that its marketing implied it was a bank.

Is Chime safe?
For a modest everyday balance, mostly yes, but it is not the same as a bank account. Chime is a technology company. The money you see in the app is held at The Bancorp Bank, N.A. or Stride Bank, N.A., and Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary insurance reaches you "on a pass-through basis", which means it depends on the records being right. Both banks had CET1 ratioA bank's highest-quality capital (mainly shares and retained profits) as a share of its risk-weighted assets. Higher means more room to absorb losses.More in the glossary ratios above 14% in June 2026, but they are small, and Chime has paid federal and California penalties over slow refunds and poor customer service. We score Chime 62/100, below Revolut, which holds full banking licences in the UK and EU.
How pass-through FDIC insurance works
Your checking balance sits in a pooled account at Bancorp or Stride "for the benefit of" Chime members. Savings balances can be swept onward to other Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary community banks. The FDIC treats your share of each pool as your own deposit, up to $250,000 per bank, but only if three things hold: the accounts are titled as held for customers, the records show who owns what, and the money really is at the bank.
The FDIC does not check this in advance. Chime's own annual report warns that if the FDIC disagreed with its records after a bank failure, members' claims might not be treated as insured. And the insurance covers only a bank failing. If Chime itself failed, your money would still be at the banks, but getting it back could take time.
What the Synapse collapse means for Chime users
Synapse Financial Technologies sat between apps such as Yotta, Copper and Juno and the banks that held their customers' money. When it filed for bankruptcy in April 2024, its records did not match the banks', and many users were cut off from their money for months. The bankruptcy trustee estimated a shortfall in the tens of millions of dollars. In August 2025 the CFPB sued Synapse and said it planned to use its victims' fund to pay people back.
Chime is not a Synapse client. It contracts directly with Bancorp and Stride, and since November 2025 its own system, ChimeCore, has processed all transactions and kept the member account records. That removes one middleman, but it does not remove the main lesson: with pass-through cover, your protection is only as good as the ledger.
Fines and complaints
| Date | Regulator | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| March 2021 | California DFPI, Illinois | Settlements over marketing that implied Chime was a bank; $200,000 Illinois penalty |
| February 2024 | California DFPI | Consent order over customer service; $2.5 million penalty |
| May 2024 | CFPB | Refunds from closed accounts often took more than 90 days, against a 14-day policy; $3.25 million penalty and at least $1.3 million in redress |
Most complaints about Chime are about frozen or closed accounts. Fintech partner banks are under pressure from regulators to stop fraud and money laundering, and accounts can be locked with little explanation. That is a real cost if Chime holds all your money.
Chime is buying a bank
On 8 September 2026 Chime agreed to buy Stride Bank for $590 million in cash. If the OCC and the Federal Reserve approve, Stride becomes Chime Bank, N.A. and Chime becomes a bank holding company, expected in the first half of 2027. That would bring Chime under bank capital and supervision rules for the first time. The Bancorp partnership runs at least to July 2028, so some accounts may still sit there.
The partner banks also have a history. The Bancorp Bank was under an Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary consent order over Anti-money launderingThe rules and checks that stop criminals from moving illegal money through banks, payment firms and crypto exchanges.More in the glossary and sanctions controls from June 2014 until May 2020.
How to use Chime safely
- Treat Chime as a spending account. Keep larger savings at a bank such as Ally Bank, where you are a direct depositor.
- Check which partner bank holds your account in the app or account agreement, and count any other money you hold at that bank against the same $250,000 limit.
- Keep a second account elsewhere with enough to cover a few weeks of bills, in case your Chime account is frozen for a review.
- Turn on card locking and transaction alerts, and never share a one-time code with anyone who calls you.
How we scored it
Liquidity (72) is Chime's strongest factor, because the partner banks' deposits are almost all small, insured balances. Conduct (55) and stability (55) are the weakest, for the 2024 penalties and a model never tested by a bank failure. Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary (64) is held back by the pass-through structure, and capital (60) by the small size of the partner banks.
Questions people ask
Is Chime a real bank?
No. Chime Financial is a technology company. Its accounts are provided by The Bancorp Bank, N.A. and Stride Bank, N.A., which are Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary national banks. That will change in part if Chime completes its purchase of Stride, which would become Chime Bank, N.A., expected in the first half of 2027.
Is my money in Chime FDIC-insured?
Yes, on a pass-through basis, up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, per ownership category. If Bancorp or Stride failed, the Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary would treat your share of the pooled account as your own deposit, provided the records show what belongs to you. Chime itself is not FDIC-insured, so the insurance does not cover Chime going out of business.
Could what happened with Synapse happen at Chime?
The risk is not zero, but the structure differs. Synapse was a middleman between apps such as Yotta and Juno and several banks, and when it went bankrupt in 2024 its records did not match the banks'. Chime works directly with its two partner banks and has run its own ledger since November 2025. Pass-through insurance still depends on those records being right.
Why did Chime close my account?
Chime and its partner banks must close or restrict accounts they suspect of fraud or money laundering, and they do not always explain why. The CFPB found in 2024 that Chime often took more than 90 days to send back balances from closed accounts. If you are waiting for money, ask for a written timeline and file a complaint with the CFPB if it is late.
Is SpotMe or MyPay covered by FDIC insurance?
No. SpotMe and MyPay are ways to get money in advance or overdraft without a fee, not deposits. Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary insurance protects your deposited balance, not credit or advance products.
