Is Emirates NBD safe?

Emirates NBD

Emirates NBD Bank PJSC, supervised by the Central Bank of the UAE, is A+/A1 rated, very profitable and 56% owned by the Government of Dubai. The catch for savers is that the UAE has no deposit insurance scheme with a published limit, and capital buffers above the minimum are slim after its RBL Bank purchase.

How the score breaks down

Formed in 2007 by merging Emirates Bank and National Bank of Dubai. It came through the 2009 Dubai debt crisis with heavy exposure to Dubai government entities and amid federal support for UAE banks. It has grown strongly since, and in 2026 it kept lending through Iranian strikes on the UAE.

Is Emirates NBD safe?

Emirates NBD is one of the strongest banks in the Gulf, but your deposit there is not protected the way it would be in Europe or the US. Your money is held by Emirates NBD Bank (P.J.S.C.), supervised by the Central Bank of the UAE, and the UAE has no Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary scheme with a published payout limit. What stands behind savers instead is the bank itself (rated A1 by Moody's and A+ by Fitch, with AED 12.9 billion of profit after tax in the first half of 2026) and the Government of Dubai, which owns 56% of it. The other catch is that capital sits only a little above the central bank's minimum. We score Emirates NBD 68/100, level with State Bank of India, another state-backed bank, and below Standard Chartered at 75, which also has a large UAE business.

What protects deposits in the UAE

Most countries we cover have an explicit scheme: €100,000 in the EU, $250,000 at Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary US banks, R100,000 in South Africa. The UAE does not publish one. Article 122 of the 2018 central bank law said the CBUAE board "may issue regulations for protection of deposits", including a compensation fund, but no scheme with a payout limit appears in the central bank's rulebook, and the article was repealed when the 2025 central bank law took effect. Some consumer guides quote AED 100,000 per depositor; we could not find that figure in any CBUAE regulation.

In practice, UAE depositors rely on implicit state support. Emirates NBD is a domestic systemically important bank and the flagship bank of the Dubai government, and both Moody's and Fitch build likely government support into its ratings. That is a strong backstop, but it is a policy choice, not a legal right to a fixed amount.

The requirements are those the bank reports before the temporary relief the central bank offered during the conflict. CET1 fell from 14.7% a year earlier, mainly because consolidating India's RBL Bank added AED 60 billion of risk-weighted assets. The bank sold $750 million of Additional Tier 1 capital in April 2026 to support its Tier 1 ratio. Profit rebuilds capital quickly, with a return on tangible equity of 18.5%, but the margin over the total capital requirement was under one percentage point at June 2026.

The Iran conflict and liquidity

Iranian missile and drone strikes on the UAE began on 28 February 2026 (see our UAE travel page). Emirates NBD kept operating, joined the CBUAE's Financial Institution Resilience Package with loan payment deferrals, and took an extra AED 865 million of provisions in the first quarter. Its Liquidity coverage ratioA bank's cash and easy-to-sell assets compared with the money that could flow out in a 30-day crisis. It must be at least 100%.More in the glossary dropped from 185% to 135% over the year to June 2026, still above the 100% minimum. In April it issued the first public bond sold by a Gulf issuer since the conflict began. Management said in July that volumes had returned to pre-conflict levels.

How to keep money safe at Emirates NBD

  1. Do not keep all your savings in one UAE bank. With no published insurance limit, spreading money across unrelated banks is the main protection you control.
  2. Keep a second account outside the UAE if you are an expat, so a conflict-related disruption or a move abroad does not leave you without access.
  3. Emirates NBD will not call you to ask for an OTP or card PIN; hang up and call the number on your card.
  4. Treat wealth products, structured notes and funds as investments, not deposits.

How we scored it

Conduct (78) is the strongest factor, with no material violations reported for 2025. Capital (70) combines A+ ratings and high profits with a buffer that is slim after the RBL deal. Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary (55) is the weakest, because the UAE offers no published payout limit and savers depend on government support rather than a legal guarantee.

Questions people ask

Are deposits in UAE banks insured?

Not under a scheme with a published limit that we could find. The 2018 central bank law let the CBUAE board issue Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary rules and set up a compensation fund, but no scheme with a per-depositor payout amount appears in the CBUAE rulebook, and that article has since been repealed. Some guides quote AED 100,000; check with the CBUAE before relying on it.

Is Emirates NBD government owned?

Mostly. The Government of Dubai owns about 56% indirectly through the Investment Corporation of Dubai, and foreign investors held 14.4% at the end of July 2026. Rating agencies factor in likely support from the UAE and Dubai governments if the bank got into trouble, which is a big part of why it is rated A1 and A+.

Is my money safe in Emirates NBD during the Iran conflict?

The bank kept operating through the Iranian missile and drone strikes that began on 28 February 2026, reported record first-half profit and said business volumes had returned to pre-conflict levels. It booked AED 865 million of extra provisions in the first quarter and joined the central bank's relief programme for borrowers. Keep a second account at another bank so an outage or travel disruption does not cut off your money.

Are Emirates Islamic, Liv, DenizBank and RBL Bank the same as Emirates NBD?

Liv is a digital brand of Emirates NBD itself. Emirates Islamic is a separate UAE bank in the group. DenizBank in Türkiye and RBL Bank in India are separate subsidiaries; deposits there are protected by Turkey's TMSF and India's DICGC, not by UAE arrangements.

Is Emirates NBD the largest bank in the UAE?

It is the second-largest UAE bank by assets, with AED 1.32 trillion at June 2026, and the third-largest in the Gulf, by its own count. It is the largest financial institution in Dubai.
