Which deposit guarantee covers you

KBC runs separate banks in each of its core countries, so protection depends on where your account is.

KBC Bank ratings (Moody's / S&P / Fitch)A2 / A+ / AA-

KBC treats 13% as the minimum CET1 ratio it wants to hold and pays out capital above its target to shareholders. The ratio dipped from 14.9% at the end of 2025 mainly because of recent acquisitions, including 365.bank in Slovakia. The 14.4% figure excludes the Basel IV output floor, which is being phased in. The requirement includes a 1.5% buffer for Belgian systemically important banks.

Deposits are spread across Belgium (61%), the Czech Republic (22%) and smaller markets. Credit quality is sound, with a credit cost ratio of 0.11% in the first half of 2026 before special items.

Moody's cut the senior unsecured rating of KBC IFIMA, a funding vehicle whose debt KBC Bank guarantees, to A2 in April 2026. It said this followed the EU's new crisis management law, which puts all depositors ahead of senior bondholders. That change is good news for savers.

The 2008–09 rescue

KBC was badly hurt by its holdings of collateralised debt obligations, complex securities backed by US credit. In 2008 it received €3.5 billion from the Belgian federal government and in 2009 another €3.5 billion from the Flemish regional government, together with a federal guarantee on its CDO exposure. It sold businesses to meet EU state aid conditions, repaid the federal state at the end of 2012 and paid off Flanders in December 2015, five years ahead of schedule. Including penalties and premiums, KBC said it paid the two governments €13.09 billion. That rescue is why stability scores 45, the same as ING.

Ireland's tracker mortgage scandal

KBC's worst conduct case was outside its home market. On 22 September 2020 the Central Bank of Ireland reprimanded KBC Bank Ireland and fined it €18.3 million, at the highest end of its powers, for failures affecting 3,741 tracker mortgage accounts. The regulator described the impact as "devastating", including overcharging and the loss of 66 properties, and said KBC's unwillingness to admit its failings until December 2017 caused avoidable harm. We found no comparable penalty against KBC in Belgium or the Czech Republic.

Practical tips for KBC customers

  1. Check which legal entity holds your money: KBC Bank NV, CBC Banque SA or, in the Czech Republic, ČSOB. Each has its own €100,000 limit.
  2. Know what is not a deposit. KBC sells many investment funds and branch 21 and 23 insurance savings products through its branches, and these are protected differently or not at all.
  3. Approve payments only in KBC Mobile when you started them yourself. Phishing texts and calls posing as the bank are common in Belgium.
  4. For balances above €100,000, open an account at an unrelated bank. ČSOB customers can do the same with a Czech bank outside the KBC group.

How we scored it

Liquidity (86), capital (84) and Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary (84) are KBC's strongest factors, backed by AA- from Fitch and a large retail deposit base. Stability history (45) is the weakest because of the 2008–09 rescue, and conduct (68) reflects the Irish tracker mortgage fine. Compare ABN AMRO and Rabobank next door in the Netherlands.
