Is Mercado Pago safe?

Mercado Pago

Mercado Pago, the fintech arm of MercadoLibre, is a regulated payment company in Brazil, Mexico and Argentina, not a bank. Account money must be kept apart from its own funds, in Brazil in federal government bonds, but it is not covered by deposit insurance. The group is profitable but lends heavily to risky borrowers.

MercadoLibre was founded in 1999 and Mercado Pago in 2003. It has grown through Argentina's currency crises and Brazil's 2015–16 recession without a rescue, but it has never faced a run as a holder of customer money.

Is Mercado Pago safe?

For payments and everyday balances, yes; for large savings, it depends on which product you use. Mercado Pago, the fintech arm of MercadoLibre, is not a bank in Brazil, Mexico or Argentina. In Brazil your account balance is held by Mercado Pago Instituição de Pagamento Ltda., an E-moneyMoney held as a stored balance with a payment firm rather than as a bank deposit. It is safeguarded, not covered by deposit insurance.More in the glossary issuer that must ring-fence customer money in federal government securities. That is solid protection, but it is not Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary: the Fundo Garantidor de Créditos (FGC) covers only the CDBs behind its Cofrinhos savings pots. In Mexico and Argentina no deposit insurance applies. Add a high-risk loan book and we score Mercado Pago 60/100, one point above Wise and below Nubank at 68.

MercadoLibre's 2025 annual report states that Brazilian payment account money is "segregated from its own assets and fully backed by federal government securities", which ring-fences it against the company's own debts. At June 2026 the group held $11.2 billion in its Central Bank of Brazil mandatory guarantee, against $16.0 billion of funds owed to customers across all countries.

Waiting for a bank licence

Mercado Pago has applied to become a bank in its two biggest Spanish-speaking markets. The Mexican subsidiary asked the CNBV on 11 September 2024 to operate as a multiple banking institution; the request was still pending in MercadoLibre's filings and in press reports from mid-2026. In Argentina, MercadoLibre applied to the central bank on 17 June 2025 for a licence for a new bank, which was under review. A licence would bring deposits in those countries under Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary and bank capital rules, but until it is granted, treat your balance as E-moneyMoney held as a stored balance with a payment firm rather than as a bank deposit. A profitable group with a risky loan book

MercadoLibre earned $883 million in the first half of 2026, down from $1,017 million a year earlier, as its operating margin fell from 12.5% to 6.8%. Part of the squeeze is credit. Gross loans of about $16.4 billion carried a $4.25 billion allowance for losses in June 2026, and $4.6 billion was past due. That is far riskier lending than a mortgage bank does, and Mercado Pago does not publish a CET1 ratioA bank's highest-quality capital (mainly shares and retained profits) as a share of its risk-weighted assets. Higher means more room to absorb losses.More in the glossary. In Brazil its regulated entities must hold regulatory capital of at least 10.5% of risk-weighted assets.

Why this matters less than it sounds: the lending is funded by the group's own capital, debt and securitisations, not by your segregated account balance. If credit losses hurt MercadoLibre, the ring-fenced government bonds should still be there for customers.

Scams, blocks and a 2022 data leak

Pix has made instant-transfer fraud common in Brazil, and any large wallet is a target. The app supports biometric login, device checks and transfer limits. In 2022 MercadoLibre said data of about 300,000 users had been accessed during an attack in which source code was also stolen. From August 2026, Argentina's central bank requires payment providers to meet the IT security rules that apply to banks. Procon-SP fined Mercado Pago R$10.2 million over a Black Friday discount promise it did not keep in 2019, and in Argentina the Buenos Aires province has opened a case against MercadoLibre and Mercado Pago over allegedly abusive contract clauses.

How to use Mercado Pago safely

  1. In Brazil, keep money you want FGC-covered in Cofrinhos or CDBs, under R$250,000 per issuing institution, and check the issuer on the product screen.
  2. Remember that Mexican and Argentine balances, and Mercado Fondo, are not covered by Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary. Keep savings you cannot lose in an insured bank.
  3. Set a night-time Pix limit and turn on biometric approval for transfers.
  4. Never move money because someone claiming to be Mercado Pago or a bank calls you. Hang up and use the app.
  5. Keep a second account for bills in case a review freezes yours.
