Is Santander Brasil safe?
Santander Brasil
Santander Brasil is one of Brazil's largest private banks, about 90% owned by Spain's Banco Santander, and deposits are covered by the FGC up to R$250,000 per person. Its capital cushion is thinner than Itaú's or Bradesco's, profits fell in 2026, and Central Bank settlements and Procon fines weigh on conduct.

Is Santander Brasil safe?
For a depositor in Brazil, yes, within the FGC limit. Banco Santander (Brasil) S.A. is one of the country's largest private banks, behind only Itaú and Bradesco by assets, with R$1,312 billion in September 2026, and the Central Bank requires it to hold an extra 1.0% of capital for its systemic importance. Its CET1 ratioA bank's highest-quality capital (mainly shares and retained profits) as a share of its risk-weighted assets. Higher means more room to absorb losses.More in the glossary was 10.9% against an 8.0% requirement at the end of September 2026, and its Liquidity coverage ratioA bank's cash and easy-to-sell assets compared with the money that could flow out in a 30-day crisis. It must be at least 100%.More in the glossary was 175% at the end of 2025. The FGC insures up to R$250,000 per person across the group.
We score it 69/100, one point below Bradesco and four below Itaú Unibanco. The gap comes from a thinner capital cushion, falling profits and a conduct record that includes two Central Bank settlements. The bank's Spanish parent is a strength, but it does not guarantee Brazilian deposits. Our Santander page covers the Spanish group and its banks in Europe and the US.
Capital and profits in 2026
| Measure (30 September 2026) | Santander Brasil |
|---|---|
| CET1 ratioA bank's highest-quality capital (mainly shares and retained profits) as a share of its risk-weighted assets. Higher means more room to absorb losses.More in the glossary | 10.9% |
| CET1 requirement | 8.0% |
| Tier 1 ratio | 11.9% |
| Basel (total capital) ratio | 15.1% |
| Total capital requirement | 11.5% |
| NPL ratio (90 days) | 3.4% |
The CET1 buffer is about 2.9 points, against roughly four at Itaú and Bradesco, and the ratio has slipped from 11.7% a year earlier as risk-weighted assets grew faster than capital. Earnings are the first line of defence, and they are weakening. Recurring profit fell to R$2.9 billion in the third quarter of 2026, 28% less than a year before, and the return on equity dropped to 11.9%, from 17.5% a year earlier. Bad loans over 90 days rose to 3.4% of the expanded loan book, from 2.8% a year earlier, driven by lower-income and agribusiness borrowers among individual customers. The bank has cut lending to the mass market and grown mortgages and small-business loans instead.
Like every Brazilian bank, Santander Brasil is held back by the country's BB sovereign rating. S&P rates its long-term foreign-currency debt BB and Moody's Baa3, according to its 2025 annual report.
What the FGC covers at Santander
The Fundo Garantidor de Créditos is a private fund paid for by Brazilian banks. It pays out if the Central Bank intervenes in or liquidates a member bank. For a Santander customer:
- R$250,000 per person per financial group. Santander Brasil and its other Brazilian banks and finance companies count as one.
- Covered: current accounts, savings (poupança), CDBs, LCIs, LCAs and similar bank-issued instruments.
- Not covered: investment funds, shares, debentures and PGBL or VGBL pension plans, even when sold by Santander.
- A cap of R$1 million per person across all banks, renewed every four years.
Banco Santander S.A. of Spain owns about 90% of the bank. In July 2026 it announced an exchange offer for the remaining shares, paid in new Spanish shares. That changes who owns the bank, not who holds your money: deposits stay with the Brazilian entity and its FGC cover.
Settlements, fines and complaints
Santander Brasil has no money laundering scandal on the scale seen at some global banks, but its record is mixed. In May 2022 it signed a settlement with the Central Bank over overdraft interest above the legal cap, wrong calculations on card instalments and Pix fees charged to micro-entrepreneurs, refunding R$79.1 million and paying R$8.1 million. In August 2024 it signed a second settlement, made public in September, agreeing to pay R$19.4 million over weak checks on the legality of foreign exchange deals and on its foreign exchange clients, and to improve its Anti-money launderingThe rules and checks that stop criminals from moving illegal money through banks, payment firms and crypto exchanges.More in the glossary controls under an independent audit. The settlement states that it is no admission of wrongdoing. On 9 October 2026 the Central Bank declared that the bank had met all the conditions of the settlement it signed on 26 August 2024 (decision 2534/2026, published on 14 October), which closes that case.
State consumer authorities have also acted. In April 2026 Minas Gerais's Procon fined it R$10.7 million for paying unrequested loans into customers' accounts and using their payroll-loan margin without consent, and in May it added R$1.7 million over its call centre, a fine the bank can appeal. In 2025 the state court upheld an earlier R$9.7 million fine for wrongly listing about 7,000 public servants as defaulters.
Complaints are middling. In the Central Bank's ranking for the third quarter of 2026, Santander had 29.8 upheld complaints per million customers, eighth of the 15 largest banks and payment firms, better than Itaú (43.2) and Bradesco (57.2) but far behind Nubank (10.7).
How to protect your money at Santander

- Refuse any loan deposit you did not ask for and report it to the bank and the Central Bank at once.
- Set a low night-time Pix limit and hang up on callers who ask you to move money.
- Check Registrato at the Central Bank for loans or accounts opened in your name.

Questions people ask
Is my money safe at Santander Brasil?
Up to R$250,000 per person, deposits and bank-issued investments such as CDBs at Santander Brasil are covered by the FGC. Is Santander Brasil the same bank as Santander in Spain?
No. Banco Santander (Brasil) S.A. is a separate Brazilian bank, licensed by the Central Bank of Brazil and about 90% owned by Banco Santander S.A. of Spain. Brazilian deposits are covered by the FGC, not by Spain's Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary fund, and the Spanish parent has no legal duty to repay them.
Does the FGC cover Santander investment funds and pension plans?
No. The FGC covers current and savings accounts, CDBs, LCIs, LCAs and similar instruments issued by the bank, up to R$250,000 per person across the whole Santander group in Brazil. Investment funds, shares, debentures and PGBL or VGBL pension plans sold in a Santander branch or app are not covered.
What does Banco Santander's 2026 exchange offer mean for customers?
Nothing for deposits. In July 2026 the Spanish parent said it intends to offer its own shares for the roughly 10% of Santander Brasil it does not own. The bank, its licence and FGC cover stay the same, and it will remain listed in São Paulo; only its New York listing may end.
Has the Central Bank fined Santander Brasil?
It has settled rather than been fined. In 2022 it agreed to refund R$79.1 million to customers for overcharging and pay R$8.1 million, and in 2024 it paid R$19.4 million to close a case over foreign exchange controls, without admitting wrongdoing. In October 2026 the Central Bank declared the conditions of that 2024 settlement met. A R$100,000 Central Bank fine from 2015 was cancelled on appeal in 2018.
