Is moomoo safe?

For a US investor, the basic protections are in place but thinner than at the largest brokers. Moomoo Financial Inc. is a SEC-registered broker and FINRA member. Your securities are held by its sister company, Futu Clearing Inc., and both firms are SIPC members. The parent, Futu Holdings, is listed on Nasdaq and made $1.45 billion in 2025. We score moomoo 73/100.

What pulls the score down is outside the US account itself: a proposed penalty of about $271 million from China's securities regulator, a suspension of new accounts in Japan, a run of smaller FINRA fines, and no excess insurance above SIPC that we could confirm.

Moomoo also runs a business in Malaysia. Hong Kong customers use the Futubull app through Futu Securities International (Hong Kong). We found no UK company in Futu's latest annual report, so UK readers cannot open a local moomoo account at present. We score the page mainly on the US set-up.

Crypto in the US is offered by Moomoo Crypto Inc., a money services business registered with FinCEN. How is my money protected in the US?

BrokerCheck lists Futu Clearing as moomoo's US clearing firm since October 2022, next to an older arrangement with Interactive Brokers dating from 2016. Futu Clearing holds client securities in omnibus accounts and must keep them segregated under SEC rules. If assets were missing after a failure, SIPC would replace up to $500,000 per customer, of which $250,000 can be cash.

Many US app brokers buy an excess-SIPC policy from Lloyd's underwriters to add cover above that. Moomoo's US disclosures mention only SIPC, and we could not confirm an excess policy from a moomoo or Futu document, so we score protection on SIPC alone. That is one reason moomoo sits a little below Webull on this factor.

Uninvested cash in the sweep programme leaves the brokerage account and goes to program banks. It is Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary up to $250,000 per bank, $2 million in total, and it stops being covered by SIPC once swept.

What about China?

Futu is headquartered in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and 2,559 of its 3,540 employees were in mainland China at the end of 2025, against 131 in the US. Founder and chief executive Leaf Hua Li and one other holder of Class B shares control 90.3% of the votes.

Futu has never held a brokerage licence in mainland China. In December 2022 the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) opened inquiries into its cross-border business with mainland investors, and Futu removed its Futubull app from mainland app stores in May 2023. On 22 May 2026 the CSRC sent Futu a pre-notice of penalties: confiscation of gains and fines of about RMB 1.85 billion ($271 million) across group companies, plus a personal fine of RMB 1.25 million for Li Hua. Futu can still contest the decision. It says mainland clients were about 13% of funded accounts and that business elsewhere runs normally. The penalty is large in absolute terms but below one quarter's profit.

What other fines has moomoo paid?

  • November 2024, FINRA, $750,000: paid influencers brought in more than 29,000 funded accounts with posts that were not fair and balanced, some suggesting investments were safe because the firm was a FINRA member. The firm also failed to send privacy notices to 456,156 customers.
  • February 2025, NFA, $100,000: Futu Futures filed financial reports late and supervised staff poorly.
  • December 2025, FINRA, $125,000: it failed to report 4,192 large options positions.
  • June 2026, Japan: regulators suspended new account openings at Moomoo Securities Japan for three months and ordered fixes to how it labelled US ETFs as tax-free NISA products, to transaction monitoring and to internal controls.

None of these cases found that customer assets were lost.

How to keep your moomoo account safe

  2. Remove old devices from your account, because a trusted device skips the extra login check.
  3. How we scored it

Regulation (85) and financial strength (80) are moomoo's strongest factors: US broker-dealers under SEC and FINRA rules, and a parent that earns well and is well capitalised, held back by concentrated control and China risk. Investor protection (74) reflects SIPC without confirmed excess cover. Conduct (52) is the weakest, driven by the pending CSRC penalty, the Japanese suspension and the FINRA cases. Account security scores 68.

Is my money protected if moomoo goes bust?

In the US, securities are held by Futu Clearing Inc. and must be kept separate from the firm's own assets. Why is China fining Futu?

On 22 May 2026 the China Securities Regulatory Commission told Futu it intends to penalise group companies for providing securities, fund and futures services to investors in mainland China without a licence between 2023 and mid-2025. The proposed total is about RMB 1.85 billion ($271 million). Futu can contest it, and says business outside mainland China is unaffected.

Can I use moomoo in the UK?

We found no UK company in Futu's 2025 annual report, and moomoo's UK web address does not lead to a UK service. Moomoo serves the US, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada and Malaysia through local companies. Check which company you would sign up with before opening an account.
