Is Revolut (trading) safe?
Revolut (trading)
Revolut's investment accounts are run by separate brokers, not its bank. Revolut Trading Ltd (FCA) serves the UK, Revolut Securities Europe UAB (Bank of Lithuania) the EEA and Revolut Securities Inc. (FINRA, SIPC) the US. The group is very profitable, but EEA cover is €22,000 and Italy fined the EU arm in 2026.

Is Revolut safe for investing?
Mostly yes, with two catches. When you buy shares in the Revolut app, you are not dealing with Revolut's bank. Investment accounts are run by separate brokerage companies: Revolut Trading Ltd in the UK, Revolut Securities Europe UAB in the European Economic Area and Revolut Securities Inc. in the US. Each is licensed by a mainstream regulator and keeps client assets segregated, and the group behind them made a $2.3 billion profit before tax in 2025. We score Revolut's trading service 72/100.
The first catch is the compensation limit in Europe: €22,000. The second is how much of the service runs through fractional shares and dealing with Revolut as principal, which is where Italy's consumer authority found fault in 2026. For the bank side of the app, including Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary and the UK banking licence, see our Revolut bank page.

Revolut Trading Ltd got its own FCA investment authorisation in 2025, according to the group's annual report, and now offers stocks and shares ISAs. The EEA company is an investment firm licensed in Lithuania, separate from Revolut Bank UAB. Your current account at the bank and your investment account at the broker have different protection: money in the investment account is client money, not a deposit, so the €100,000 deposit guarantee does not apply to it.
Crypto in the app is run by yet another company and is not covered by any of these schemes. Flexible Cash Funds are money market fund units (a Fidelity fund in the EEA), protected as investments, not deposits.
Where your shares actually sit
Revolut does not run its own stock exchange connections. It passes orders to, and keeps shares with, outside brokers in pooled omnibus accounts. Its EEA best-execution policy names them: DriveWealth LLC, a FINRA and SIPC member, and GTN Asia in Singapore for US shares; Upvest Securities GmbH, supervised by BaFin, for EU shares and ETFs; and GTN for bonds. The UK terms describe the same model without naming the brokers, with legal title held by a nominee such as Revolut Trading Nominees Ltd under the FCA's custody rules.
The group's 2025 accounts confirm that client funds at Revolut Securities Europe and Revolut Trading are kept off its balance sheet, as money it holds only for clients. Two caveats matter:
- Custody abroad. Shares may sit with a broker outside your country, so in that broker's insolvency your rights follow its local law. Revolut's terms say clients could share in any shortfall.
- Fractional shares. For US shares and fractions, the EEA company acts partly as principal, trading against its own book outside an exchange. Fractions carry no voting rights and cannot be transferred out; if you leave, they are sold. Revolut also keeps the interest on uninvested client money in UK investment accounts.
We found no securities lending programme in the UK or EEA terms, so your shares are not lent out to earn fees.
Fines and complaints
The main trading-related case is Italian. On 2 April 2026 the AGCM, Italy's competition and consumer authority, fined Revolut €11.5 million across three cases. €5 million fell on Revolut Securities Europe UAB and Revolut Group Holdings for not making clear, from first contact, the extra costs and limits of "commission-free" investing, especially fractional shares. The rest concerned bank accounts. Revolut said it strongly disagrees and will appeal in the Italian courts.
Elsewhere in the group, the Bank of Lithuania fined Revolut Bank UAB €3.5 million in 2025 for weak Anti-money launderingThe rules and checks that stop criminals from moving illegal money through banks, payment firms and crypto exchanges.More in the glossary monitoring. The US broker-dealer has no disclosures on BrokerCheck since its FINRA approval in June 2021.
How strong is the company behind it?
The trading companies are small parts of a large, profitable group. Revolut's 2025 annual report shows a profit before tax of $2.3 billion and £4.9 billion of capital, all CET1 ratioA bank's highest-quality capital (mainly shares and retained profits) as a share of its risk-weighted assets. Higher means more room to absorb losses.More in the glossary, and fee income from wealth products rose to £663.5 million from £506.3 million. Revolut is privately owned, so there is no stock market disclosure as at listed brokers such as eToro, and the report does not give separate capital figures for each trading subsidiary.
How to invest safely with Revolut
- Check which company your investment account is with, in the app's documents. It decides your regulator and your compensation limit.
- In the EEA, remember the investor scheme pays at most €22,000 if Revolut Securities fails and assets are missing.
- If you may move to another broker later, buy whole shares where you can, because fractions cannot be transferred.
- Turn on biometric login, and never approve a login or payment in the app because someone on the phone asks you to.
How we scored it
Regulation (82) and financial strength (80) are the strongest factors: FCA, Bank of Lithuania and FINRA oversight and a profitable, well-capitalised group. Investor protection (70) is held back by the €22,000 EEA limit and the reliance on outside custodians and principal dealing for fractions. Conduct (64) reflects the Italian fine, and account security (63) the 2022 breach and the 2026 leak of identity documents.
Questions people ask
Are my Revolut shares protected if Revolut goes bust?
Your shares are held for you in segregated omnibus accounts at outside brokers, not as Revolut's own assets, so they should be returned if the trading company fails. If shares or cash are missing, the Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary pays up to £85,000 for Revolut Trading Ltd clients, Lithuania's scheme up to €22,000 for Revolut Securities Europe clients, and SIPC up to $500,000 in the US.
Does the FSCS £120,000 bank limit cover my Revolut investments?
No. The £120,000 limit covers deposits at a bank. Your Revolut investment account is with Revolut Trading Ltd, an investment firm, so if it fails the Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary investment limit of £85,000 applies. The bank limit matters only if a bank holding Revolut Trading's client money fails.
Do I own real shares on Revolut?
Yes, for ordinary share purchases, but in a pooled nominee account rather than in your own name. Fractional shares are a book entry; you cannot vote with them or move them to another broker, so they must be sold if you leave. CFDs on Revolut are contracts with Revolut, not shares; its EEA CFD terms say 67% of retail accounts lose money.
Why was Revolut fined in Italy?
On 2 April 2026 Italy's competition and consumer authority, the AGCM, fined Revolut €11.5 million in total. €5 million of it, on Revolut Securities Europe UAB and Revolut Group Holdings, was for not clearly telling customers from the start about the extra costs and limits of commission-free investing, including fractional shares. Revolut said it disagrees and will appeal.
Does Revolut lend out my shares?
We found no securities lending programme in Revolut's UK or EEA trading terms. That is worth rechecking if Revolut adds an opt-in lending feature, as some other brokers have.
