Methodology

How we score activities

The 4 factors, weights and scoring rubric behind every SafetyScorer score for activities, on a 0–100 scale where 100 is safest.

Factors and weights

Each factor is scored from 0 to 100 against the rubric below. The overall score is the weighted average, rounded to a whole number.

  1. Fatality risk

    50% of score

    Micromorts (one-in-a-million chance of death) per session, trip or hour. 95+: under 0.1. 85–94: 0.1–1. 70–84: 1–5. 55–69: 5–20. 40–54: 20–100. Below 40: over 100.

  2. Serious injury risk

    25% of score

Rate of injuries needing hospital care per participation or hour. 90+: very rare. Below 50: common.

  3. Controllability

    15% of score

How much training, equipment and good choices reduce the risk. 90+: risk mostly under the participant's control. Below 50: large risk that skill cannot remove.

  4. Rescue and environment

    10% of score

Remoteness, exposure to weather and how fast help can arrive. 90+: help is close. Below 50: remote, hostile environment.
