Is Garuda Indonesia safe?

Garuda Indonesia

Garuda Indonesia has had no fatal accident since flight GA200 overran at Yogyakarta in 2007, killing 21. Its record since then is mostly runway and landing events. The bigger concern now is money, after aircraft were parked for lack of maintenance funds in 2025, and an ageing fleet with no new deliveries.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Accident record40% of score

    76 out of 100, Good

GA200, a Boeing 737-400, landed at 221 knots and overran at Yogyakarta on 7 March 2007, killing 21 of 140 (ASN, KNKT). Earlier, a 737-300 ditched in a river in 2002 (1 dead) and an A300 crashed near Medan in 1997 (234 dead). No fatal accident in the 19 years since.

The jets are Boeing 737-800s, 777-300ERs and Airbus A330s, with no new deliveries planned. In May 2025 Garuda had grounded at least 15 aircraft because it struggled to pay for maintenance (Bloomberg via AirlineRatings); a state-backed programme reactivated aircraft in 2026.

Is Garuda Indonesia safe?

Mostly yes. Garuda Indonesia, the national airline, has had no fatal crash since 2007, and it passes the IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary audit that IATA membership requires. Two things hold the score down. First, history: three fatal accidents in ten years (1997, 2002 and 2007), the two deadliest rooted in crew and controller errors, and a regulator that the EU and FAA did not trust until the 2010s. Second, money: Garuda went through a court-supervised debt restructuring after the pandemic, and in 2025 it parked aircraft it could not afford to maintain. We score it 70.

The two crashes that shaped Garuda

GA152, 26 September 1997. An Airbus A300 approaching Medan in thick smoke haze from forest fires was being vectored by radar. The controller first called the wrong airline, then confused left and right turns. While the crew focused on the turn, the aircraft kept descending below its assigned 2,000 feet and hit trees in the hills near Pancur Batu. All 234 people on board died. It remains the deadliest crash in Indonesia.

GA200, 7 March 2007. A Boeing 737-400 from Jakarta arrived at Yogyakarta far too high. The captain dived to catch the glide path, the speed built up, and the first officer refused to extend the flaps at that speed. The ground-proximity warning sounded 15 times and the first officer twice called for a go-around. The captain landed anyway, at 221 knots, 87 knots too fast, and the jet ran off the end of the runway, across a road and into a rice field, where it burned. 21 of the 140 people on board died. KNKT's report blamed the captain's unstable approach and weak crew coordination, and also found that the first officer had not taken control as company rules required.

There was also a near-disaster in 2002, when both engines of a 737-300 flamed out in hail and the crew ditched in the shallow Bengawan Solo river; one flight attendant died.

The record since 2007

No deaths, but a steady list of landing and runway events, all investigated by KNKT, Indonesia's National Transportation Safety Committee:

  • Runway excursionWhen an aircraft leaves the runway surface during take-off or landing, either off the end (an overrun) or off the side (a veer-off).More in the glossary and excursions at Makassar (2015) and Yogyakarta (2017 and 2018), all with Boeing 737-800s.
  • Banjarmasin, 7 August 2023. A 737-800 bounced on landing; as the captain called a go-around, the tail struck the runway.
  • Solo, 2 July 2024. An A330 leased with crew for Hajj flights lost its left engine climbing out for Medina and returned; after landing, the engine caught fire on the runway.
  • Makassar, 15 May 2024. A Boeing 747 chartered for the Hajj, with 468 people on board, turned back after sparks and flames were seen from an engine. No one was hurt.
  • 3 September 2026. A 737-800 burst a main-wheel tyre on take-off from Jakarta and continued to Makassar, where it landed safely with 149 people on board.

Money and maintenance

This is the factor to watch. Garuda's debt crisis forced a restructuring in 2021–2022, and the fleet shrank. In May 2025, Garuda had grounded at least 15 aircraft because it struggled to cover maintenance costs, while its low-cost subsidiary Citilink had parked nearly half its fleet, according to Bloomberg as reported by AirlineRatings. A rescue backed by Danantara, Indonesia's state investment fund, has been bringing aircraft back into service in 2026.

Parking aircraft that cannot be maintained is the correct, safe decision; it is not a sign of unsafe flights. But airlines under financial stress have less slack for spare engines, training and fleet renewal. The fleet of Boeing 737-800s, 777-300ERs and A330s is getting older with no new aircraft on firm delivery, so the fleet scores 62.

How good is the oversight?

In 2007, after a run of crashes including Adam Air in the sea off Sulawesi, the EU banned every Indonesian airline and the FAA moved Indonesia to FAA IASAThe US FAA's check of whether a country's aviation regulator meets ICAO standards. Category 1 means it does; Category 2 means it does not.More in the glossary. Garuda was cleared by the EU in July 2009, and the FAA restored Category 1 in 2016. On 14 June 2018 the EU removed every remaining Indonesian airline from its list. Indonesia does not appear on the FAA's current IASA list (April 2025), which means "not listed", not a downgrade; Indonesian airlines do not fly to the US.

How to fly Garuda safely

  • Check the operator. Citilink (QG) and Garuda's Hajj charters on wet-leased aircraft are different operations from a GA mainline flight.
  • Belt up in the tropics. Afternoon thunderstorms over Java and Sumatra are violent; turbulence and hail are the real risks.
  • Expect volcano delays. Ash clouds from Indonesia's volcanoes close airports at short notice, often around Bali.

How we scored it

GA200 keeps the accident record at 76, and fleet (62) and incidents (62) reflect the financial strain and recurring landing events. Compare Lion Air, Indonesia's biggest airline, and Malaysia Airlines at 71.

Questions people ask

What happened on Garuda flight GA200?

On 7 March 2007 a Garuda Boeing 737-400 from Jakarta came in far too high and fast at Yogyakarta. The captain ignored 15 ground-proximity warnings and two go-around calls from the first officer, touched down at 221 knots with the flaps not set for landing, and ran off the runway into a rice field, where the jet burned. 21 of the 140 people on board died.

Was Garuda Indonesia banned in Europe?

Yes. The EU banned every airline certified in Indonesia in 2007, after a string of crashes and an ICAO audit. Garuda was among the first cleared, in July 2009, and the EU removed all remaining Indonesian airlines on 14 June 2018. No Indonesian airline is on the EU list today.

Is Garuda Indonesia safe to fly now?

Yes, for most trips. It has had no fatal accident since 2007 and passes the IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary audit as an IATA member. We score it 70, with the money-driven groundings of 2025 and an older fleet as the main reasons it is not higher.

Is Citilink the same airline as Garuda?

No. Citilink (QG) is Garuda's low-cost subsidiary with its own operating certificate and an Airbus A320 and ATR fleet. This page scores Garuda (GA) flights only; check the "operated by" line on your ticket.
