Is JetBlue safe?
JetBlue
JetBlue has never had a fatal accident or lost an aircraft. Its Airbus fleet is fly-by-wire throughout, though the A320s are now about 20 years old, and an A320 that pitched down on its own in October 2025 put at least 15 people in hospital.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Accident record40% of score
93 out of 100, ExcellentThe Aviation Safety Network lists no fatal accident and no Hull lossAn accident in which an aircraft is destroyed or damaged beyond economic repair. People may or may not be hurt.More in the glossary for JetBlue since it began flying. Its worst events, including Tail strikeWhen the tail of an aircraft touches the runway during take-off or landing, usually because the nose was raised too far or too early.More in the glossary in 2024 and 2026, damaged aircraft that were repaired. It flies fewer flights than the big US airlines, so the record covers less exposure.
Regulatory oversight20% of score
90 out of 100, ExcellentJetBlue is overseen by the FAA and is an IATA member (B6), which requires IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary. We found FAA penalties against unruly JetBlue passengers but none against the airline itself for safety violations.

76 out of 100, Good288 Airbus aircraft averaging 12 years at the end of 2025 (Form 10-K). 129 A320s average 20 to 25 years; 59 A220s average 2 and 37 A321neos 3 to 6. Serious incidents15% of score
74 out of 100, GoodOn flight 1230 in October 2025, an A320 pitched down without pilot input and diverted to Tampa; at least 15 people went to hospital. In February 2026, an A320 was evacuated at Newark after an engine failure and smoke in the cockpit.

82 out of 100, GoodHubs at New York JFK and Boston are crowded and have hard winters. The Caribbean and Latin American network includes airports with fewer approach aids and summer thunderstorms, and Florida weather causes frequent turbulence.
Is JetBlue safe?
Yes. In about 26 years of flying, JetBlue has never had a passenger or crew member die in an accident and has never lost an aircraft. We score it 86, above Delta (84) and level with British Airways, though below KLM (88). Two things hold it back: an A320 fleet that is getting old, and a run of in-flight emergencies since late 2025 that, while handled well, put people in hospital.
What happened on flight 1230?
On 30 October 2025, an A320 cruising at about 35,000 feet from Cancun to Newark suddenly dropped its nose without any input from the pilots. The autopilot stayed engaged, and the crew diverted to Tampa. At least 15 people went to hospital, including crew and passengers who were not strapped in.
A month later, on 28 November, Airbus told operators that intense solar radiation could corrupt data in the elevator and aileron computer, which moves the control surfaces, and that this had contributed to the JetBlue event. Airbus and EASA ordered a software change, in most cases a return to an earlier version, on about 6,000 A320-family aircraft worldwide before their next flight. It was one of the largest recalls in Airbus's history, and it came from one JetBlue flight. We count the event as a serious incident, but not as a failure by the airline.
Recent incidents at a glance
| Date | Flight | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| Feb 2024 | Boston | Two JetBlue A321s collided on the de-icing pad; no injuries |
| Mar 2024 | St Lucia | A321 Tail strikeWhen the tail of an aircraft touches the runway during take-off or landing, usually because the nose was raised too far or too early.More in the glossary during a go-around; repaired |
| Oct 2025 | B6 1230 | A320 pitch-down, diverted to Tampa; 15+ hospitalised |
| Feb 2026 | B6 543 | Engine failure after take-off from Newark, smoke in the cockpit, slide evacuation |
| Feb 2026 | San Francisco | A321neo bounced twice on landing, scraped the fuselage, went around and landed |
| Apr and Jul 2026 | B6 869, B6 1873 | Turbulence seriously injured a flight attendant on each flight |
The Newark event on 18 February 2026 was the most dramatic. Flight 543 to West Palm Beach turned back with an engine problem, the crew reported smoke in the cockpit after landing, and passengers left by the slides. The FAA and NTSB are looking at the cause. None of the events in the table killed anyone, and in each the crew got the aircraft down safely.
An all-Airbus fleet
JetBlue flies only Airbus jets, so every aircraft has Fly-by-wireA flight control system in which the pilot's inputs go to computers, which then move the control surfaces. Many such systems also stop unsafe manoeuvres.More in the glossary controls with flight envelope protection. Its 10-K counted 288 at the end of 2025:
- 129 A320s, averaging 20 to 25 years, the oldest part of the fleet
- 63 older A321s, about 9 to 10 years, many with the Mint business cabin
- 37 A321neos, including 11 long-range A321LRs for transatlantic routes
- 59 A220-300s, averaging 2 years, replacing the A320s
The Embraer E190s are out of service and being sold or returned. Old A320s are not unsafe, but they bring more mechanical events, and the A220 and A321neo engines from Pratt & Whitney have needed extra inspections across the industry. JetBlue had 86 aircraft on order at the end of 2025, almost all A220s and A321neos, so the share of old A320s will keep falling.
Where JetBlue flies
The network centres on New York JFK, Boston, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando. JFK and Boston are among the most congested airports in the US, with winter storms and nor'easters. A large share of flights go to the Caribbean and Latin America, where some airports have shorter runways, terrain and fewer instrument approaches, and summer brings thunderstorms.
How to fly JetBlue safely
- Keep your belt fastened whenever you are seated. On flight 1230 and on the 2026 turbulence flights, the people hurt were those not strapped in.
- Pick an A220 or A321neo if you care about aircraft age; the seat map shows the type.
- On Caribbean routes in summer, expect weather diversions and accept them; they are the crew managing a real risk.
How we scored it
The accident record (93) is ahead of Delta (90) and close to KLM (95), and FAA oversight with IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary scores 90. Serious incidents (74) and the ageing A320s (fleet 76) are the weak points. For other US airlines, compare Southwest and Alaska.
Questions people ask

Is the JetBlue A220 safe?
