Is Sky FRU safe?
Sky FRU
Sky FRU, a small Kyrgyz airline, has had no accident we could find since it began scheduled flights by mid-2024. It loses points for a fleet of two Boeing 737-300s about 30 years old, no IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary audit, a short record and a regulator that left the EU blacklist only in June 2026.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Accident record40% of score
82 out of 100, GoodNo accident or Hull lossAn accident in which an aircraft is destroyed or damaged beyond economic repair. People may or may not be hurt.More in the glossary for Sky FRU in the Aviation Safety Network data or Russia's MAK, and none in Kyrgyz investigation reports for 2023–2025. Scheduled flights began by July 2024, so the record is about two years on two aircraft. That record is clean but short, so the score sits low in the band, level with Asman Airlines.
Regulatory oversight20% of score
57 out of 100, FairKyrgyz airlines were on the EU Air Safety ListThe European Commission's list of airlines banned or restricted from flying in EU airspace because they do not meet international safety standards.More in the glossary from 2006 until 8 June 2026. Kyrgyzstan is not on the FAA IASAThe US FAA's check of whether a country's aviation regulator meets ICAO standards. Category 1 means it does; Category 2 means it does not.More in the glossary list, and Sky FRU is not an IATA member and was not on the IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary registry on 28 October 2026. Scored from Kazakhstan's 72, minus 10 for the recent EU ban and 5 for no IOSA. ICAO found no critical issues in October 2026.
Fleet15% of score
32 out of 100, PoorTwo Boeing 737-300s, a 1980s design, built in May 1995 and November 1996 (Kyrgyz civil aircraft register, September 2026). EX-37012 flew for Avia Traffic Company until at least June 2023. No current-generation aircraft and no spare jet.
Serious incidents15% of score
62 out of 100, FairNo serious incident confirmed by the regulator or an investigation. A passenger's Facebook post says a 737 circled Manas for about 40 minutes on 5 September 2025 because the nose gear would not extend (Vesti.kg); it is unconfirmed, so we describe it but do not score it. Kyrgyz events are thinly reported.
Operating environment10% of score
50 out of 100, WeakBishkek–Moscow Domodedovo three times a week since August 2026, under EASA's Russia bulletin (valid to 31 January 2027) for drones and GNSS jamming. At home, Osh has winter fog and the Issyk-Kul airport at Tamchy sits among mountains.
Is Sky FRU safe?
There is no crash on its record, but there is very little record at all. Sky FRU is one of five Kyrgyz airlines with a valid passenger certificate, and we found no accident since it began flying them, which it was doing by July 2024. That clean sheet covers about two years and two aircraft. Both are Boeing 737-300s close to 30 years old, the airline has no IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary audit, and its regulator was on the EU's blacklist until June 2026. We score it 63, level with Avia Traffic Company (63), the older Kyrgyz airline that flew one of the same jets until 2023. Confidence is low because Kyrgyz airlines publish almost nothing about safety.
A two-jet airline
Kyrgyzstan's civil aircraft register, updated in September 2026, lists exactly two aircraft for Sky FRU: EX-37012, a 737-300 built in November 1996, and EX-37015, built in May 1995. EX-37012 is not new to Kyrgyz skies. A Kyrgyz investigation report on a 2023 traffic alert shows it flying Bishkek to Osh for Avia Traffic Company in June 2023.
The 737-300 is a 1980s design with analogue-era systems, flown today mostly by small operators in Central Asia, Africa and Russia. Age alone does not make an aircraft unsafe if it is maintained well, but old types need more maintenance and spare parts are harder to find. With only two jets, Sky FRU has no reserve: if one is grounded, half the airline stops. In October 2026 FlightAware showed one Bishkek–Osh rotation under its call sign flown by an A320; we could not tell whose aircraft it was. The fleet scores 32, the weakest factor.
The September 2025 nose-gear scare
On 5 September 2025, Uran Chekirbaev, a former expert at the presidential administration, wrote on Facebook that his Sky FRU 737 from Osh had gone around at Manas instead of landing. According to his account, reported by Vesti.kg, the aircraft circled the Chui valley for about 40 minutes while the crew tried several times to lower the gear, and airport staff later told passengers that the nose gear had not extended. It then came down, and the aircraft landed normally, with a team of mechanics waiting. Neither the airline nor the regulator has confirmed his account.
The crew did what they are trained to do: hold, work the checklist and burn fuel before a possible gear-up landing. What worries us more is the follow-up. The Kyrgyz civil aviation agency's list of 2025 investigations names six events at other operators, but not this one, and we found no statement from the airline. A gear that will not extend on a 30-year-old aircraft is the kind of event an investigation should explain. Because the only source is one passenger's post, we describe it here but do not count it in the score. Serious incidents score 62, held down mainly by how little Kyrgyz airlines and their regulator publish.
Where Sky FRU flies
The core is the domestic trunk route from Bishkek to Osh, where in April 2026 the airport operator agreed common fares with Sky FRU, Avia Traffic, Aero Nomad and Tez Jet. In summer Sky FRU also flies from Osh to the Issyk-Kul airport at Tamchy; its first flight on that route in July 2024 carried 153 passengers. Since 5 August 2026 it has flown Bishkek to Moscow Domodedovo three times a week.
Each part of that network has its own hazards. Osh fogs in winter, and the 2015 Avia Traffic accident there began with a crew trying to land in fog. Tamchy is a small airport on the shore of a mountain lake. Moscow sits under EASA's conflict-zone bulletin for Russia, valid until 31 January 2027, which warns of drone attacks that close airports at short notice and of GNSS jamming. The environment scores 50.
The regulator and the EU blacklist
From 2006 to 8 June 2026 every airline certified in Kyrgyzstan was banned from EU airspace. The European Commission lifted the ban after years of work on the country's oversight, and in October 2026 an ICAO validation mission found no critical issues. The regulator has shown it will act: it revoked Tez Jet's certificate in July 2026 after an MD-83 gear collapse at Bishkek. Sky FRU's own certificate, No. 63, is listed as valid. Kyrgyzstan is not on the FAA's safety assessment list, and Sky FRU is not an IATA member and was not on IATA's IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary registry when we searched it on 28 October 2026. Oversight scores 57, the same as every Kyrgyz airline we rate: we start from neighbouring Kazakhstan's 72, then take off 10 points for an EU ban that ended less than five years ago and 5 for the missing IOSA.
How to fly Sky FRU sensibly
- Have a backup for Bishkek–Osh. Asman Airlines, Avia Traffic and Aero Nomad fly the same route, and with two jets a single technical problem can cancel Sky FRU's flights.
- On Moscow trips, leave long connections. Drone alerts can close Domodedovo for hours.
- If you want an audited airline to Moscow, compare with an IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary option such as Uzbekistan Airways via Tashkent.
How we scored it
The accident record (82) is clean but only about two years long. Oversight (57) reflects the recently lifted EU ban and the missing IOSAThe IATA Operational Safety Audit, an international audit of an airline's safety management and operations. Every IATA member must pass it.More in the glossary, the fleet (32) is two 30-year-old 737s, incidents (62) are thinly reported, with the 2025 gear problem described but not scored because it rests on one passenger's account, and the environment (50) combines Russian routes with mountain and fog airports. Overall 63.
Questions people ask
Has Sky FRU ever had a crash?
No. We found no accident or Hull lossAn accident in which an aircraft is destroyed or damaged beyond economic repair. People may or may not be hurt.More in the glossary since it began scheduled flights, which it was running by July 2024. The most serious event we found is a nose-gear problem on an Osh–Bishkek flight on 5 September 2025, described by a passenger on Facebook and not confirmed by the airline or the regulator; the gear came down after about 40 minutes of circling and the aircraft landed normally.
What planes does Sky FRU fly?
Two Boeing 737-300s, registered EX-37012 and EX-37015, built in 1996 and 1995. On the Moscow route they fly with 148 seats in one class. The 737-300 is an older generation of the 737; most airlines retired it from passenger service years ago.
Is Sky FRU allowed to fly to Europe?
The EU ban on Kyrgyz airlines ended on 8 June 2026, so Sky FRU is no longer on the EU blacklist. To fly to an EU airport it would still need an EASA third-country operator authorisation, and we found no EU route. Its only international route is Bishkek–Moscow Domodedovo.
Is Sky FRU the same as Avia Traffic Company?
No. They are separate companies with their own certificates and call signs. One of Sky FRU's two 737s, EX-37012, flew for Avia Traffic Company until at least June 2023, according to a Kyrgyz investigation report, before it moved to Sky FRU.
