Is Whee safe?
Whee
Whee is TikTok's separate chat and photo app, and it brings TikTok's data appetite with it. It runs under TikTok's general privacy policy, tracks contact info and identifiers, and its Google Play label says data is not encrypted in transit. No regulator has looked at the app itself.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Privacy30% of score
33 out of 100, PoorApple's label lists contact info and identifiers used to track you, and contacts, search history, financial info and content linked to you. Google Play lists web browsing history and address used for ads. Whee runs under TikTok's privacy policy, which covers keystroke patterns and cross-device tracking.
Security30% of score
42 out of 100, WeakGoogle Play's label, filled in by TikTok, says data isn't encrypted and isn't transferred over a secure connection. TikTok's HackerOne bug bounty does not list Whee among the apps in scope. We found no reported breach of Whee user data.
Transparency and control15% of score
45 out of 100, WeakGoogle Play says you can request deletion. But Whee has no privacy policy of its own, it links your TikTok account and connections automatically, and the Apple and Google labels disagree on whether data is shared with third parties.
Scams and harmful content15% of score
52 out of 100, WeakWhee started as a friends-only photo feed with chat, and now builds on your TikTok connections rather than strangers. The App Store rates it 16+ and Google Play in Australia 12+, a gap of four years. We found no regulator findings on harmful content on Whee.
Regulatory record10% of score
86 out of 100, ExcellentWe found no fine, order or published regulator review that names Whee. TikTok's own large GDPRThe EU's General Data Protection Regulation, which sets rules on how organisations collect and use personal data and allows large fines.More in the glossary fines and US lawsuits name the TikTok app, not Whee, so they are context only. A young, niche app that no regulator has examined sits in the 85 to 88 band.
Is Whee safe?
It is about as safe as TikTok itself, which is not a compliment on privacy. Whee is a separate chat and photo app from TikTok that signs you in with your TikTok account and pulls in your connections. It is not a stranger-chat app like Wizz or Yubo, so the risk of meeting a predator through it is lower. But it has no privacy policy of its own, Apple's label says it uses your contact info and identifiers to track you, and the Google Play label TikTok filled in says data is not encrypted in transit. We score it 46/100, close to TikTok (41) and below its sister app Lemon8 (51).
What Whee is
Whee launched quietly in June 2024 in a few countries, Malaysia among them, as a friends-only photo feed: snap a photo, add a filter, let friends comment or message you. Lowyat.NET noted at the time that you needed a TikTok account and could not sign up in the app. In 2026 its store listing describes it as "TikTok's social chat app", with chat, stories and "lightweight" social features, and calls it "Whee - TikTok Chat".
The app is growing. Google Play in Australia showed more than 5 million downloads in October 2026, and Apple's Australian store ranked it No. 44 in Social Networking. It was also listed on the US App Store, though we could not find it on the US Google Play store.
What data Whee collects
A lot, and most of it tied to you. Apple's privacy label lists contact info and identifiers as data used to track you across other companies' apps and websites. Linked to your identity are purchases, financial info, contact info, your phone contacts, the content you post, search history, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics.
The Google Play label adds web browsing history and a postal address, both marked optional and both used for advertising or marketing, and says device IDs are used for advertising too. It also says no data is shared with third parties, while Apple's label describes cross-app tracking. Those two statements are hard to reconcile.
Whee does not have its own privacy policy. Its Google Play listing points to TikTok's general policy, whose version for regions outside Europe and the US was last updated in July 2025. That policy covers device data including "keystroke patterns or rhythms", app and file names, and the linking of your activity across devices.
The encryption label
The most unusual detail is in Google Play's security section. For Whee, TikTok declares that "data isn't encrypted" and that "your data isn't transferred over a secure connection". Almost every app declares the opposite. This may be a mistake in the form rather than the real state of the app, but it is TikTok's own statement, it appears the same in every Google Play country we checked, and the labels for TikTok and Lemon8 say the opposite. We score security on it. Whee is also not listed in the scope of TikTok's bug bounty on HackerOne, which covers the main TikTok app, the TikTok Shop seller app and other TikTok products. We found no reported breach of Whee data.
Who you meet and age ratings
Because Whee builds on your TikTok connections rather than a feed of strangers, unwanted contact is less likely than on discovery apps. The weak point is that many teenagers follow and are followed by people they have never met on TikTok, and those links carry over.
The age ratings do not agree. Apple rates Whee 16+ in the US, while Google Play in Australia rates it 12+. TikTok's own minimum age is 13. Parents should go by the stricter rating.
How to use Whee more safely
- Before installing, prune your TikTok follower and following lists: Whee reuses them.
- Do not give Whee access to your phone contacts unless you need it to find friends.
- Skip the optional address and browsing fields, and turn off ad tracking on your phone.
- Do not send anything sensitive through Whee chat while the encryption label says what it does.
- For a teen, use the 16+ App Store rating as the guide and check their connections with them.
How we scored it
Privacy (33) is the weakest factor, because Whee shares TikTok's broad data policy, tracks contact info and identifiers and links contacts and search history to you. Security (42) follows TikTok's own label saying data is not encrypted in transit. Regulatory record (86) is the strongest: no regulator has acted on Whee itself, and TikTok's fines count only on the TikTok page.
Questions people ask
What is the Whee app?
Whee is a separate app from TikTok for chatting, sharing photos and posting stories with people you already know. It launched quietly in June 2024 as a friends-only photo app in a handful of countries, and its store listing now calls it "Whee - TikTok Chat". You sign in with your TikTok account and your connections carry over.
Do I need a TikTok account to use Whee?
Yes. When Whee launched, there was no way to sign up directly in the app, and the current listing says it works with your existing TikTok account. That also means Whee and TikTok share one account, one privacy policy and one data profile.
Is Whee available in the US?
In October 2026 Whee was listed on the US App Store, but we could not find it on the US Google Play store. On Google Play it is available in countries such as Australia, where it had more than 5 million downloads.
Is Whee safe for kids?
The App Store rates it 16+, while Google Play in Australia rates it 12+, and TikTok's own minimum age is 13. Contact comes mainly from existing TikTok connections, which is safer than a stranger feed, but a teen's TikTok follower list can include people they have never met. Check who they follow and who follows them back.
Does Whee share data with TikTok?
Whee is made by TikTok and points to TikTok's privacy policy, so the data sits with the same company. The policy covers device data such as keystroke patterns and links your activity across devices. Apple's label says contact info and identifiers from Whee are used to track you across other companies' apps.
