Is Danske Bank safe?
For deposits under €100,000, yes, and on financial strength alone Danske now looks like a sound Nordic bank. In June 2026 its CET1 ratioA bank's highest-quality capital (mainly shares and retained profits) as a share of its risk-weighted assets. Higher means more room to absorb losses.More in the glossary was 17.0% against a requirement of 14.7%, Fitch rated it AA, and its Liquidity coverage ratioA bank's cash and easy-to-sell assets compared with the money that could flow out in a 30-day crisis. Danske's Estonian branch was at the centre of one of Europe's largest money laundering cases, which ended in a criminal guilty plea in the US in 2022. We score it 68/100, below Nordea at 74, which has similar finances but a smaller misconduct record.
How your deposits are protected
Your money sits with Danske Bank A/S, the Danish parent company. Customers in Sweden and Finland bank with branches of that same company, so they are covered by the Danish scheme rather than their home one.

| Denmark | Danske Bank A/S | Danish Guarantee Fund, €100,000 equivalent per depositor |

The Danish fund is run by Finansiel Stabilitet and was fully funded in mid-2026, according to Danske's interim report. Danske is a Danish SIFI, which means it holds an extra 3% of capital because its failure would hurt the Danish economy. It also has a large layer of bonds that can be written down before depositors take losses: DKK 290 billion of MREL-eligible liabilities against a requirement of DKK 257 billion.
What happened in Estonia
Danske bought Sampo Bank, including its Estonian unit, in 2007. Until 2015 the Estonian branch ran a portfolio of non-resident customers, mostly from Russia and other former Soviet states, whose payments ran into the hundreds of billions of euros and were routed through US correspondent banks. Danske's controls did not stop it, and the bank told US banks its Anti-money launderingThe rules and checks that stop criminals from moving illegal money through banks, payment firms and crypto exchanges.More in the glossary checks were stronger than they were.
In December 2022 Danske pleaded guilty in the US to conspiracy to commit bank fraud and settled with the US Department of Justice, the SEC and the Danish Special Crime Unit for about $2 billion in total. The bank was put on three years of corporate probation, which ended on 13 December 2025. Danske says this closed all formal regulatory processes linked to the Estonian portfolio.
Two things are still open. Institutional investors have civil claims of about DKK 12.7 billion against the bank, and the first main hearing at the Eastern High Court is set for January 2027. Separately, Danske is still compensating customers who were overcharged because of errors in its debt collection systems; its June 2026 accounts held a DKK 880 million provision for customer remediation that includes that case.

Part of the requirement is a penalty for the past. Danish supervisors kept extra Pillar 2 capital on Danske while the Estonia case ran. With probation over, the bank expects that add-on to shrink by the end of 2026 and its CET1 requirement to fall to about 14% by 2028, and it has cut its own target from above 16% to about 16%. It paid a DKK 5 billion extraordinary dividend in May 2026. Expect the ratio to drift down, while still staying above the minimum.
Moody's, Fitch and Scope upgraded Danske in the first half of 2026. Fitch's move to AA in May puts it in the same range as Nordea.
Liquidity and funding
Danske held a liquidity reserve of DKK 557 billion in June 2026, enough to cover 159% of the outflows the rules assume in a 30-day stress. Deposits of DKK 1,135 billion are about the size of its ordinary loan book. Danish home loans are made through Realkredit Danmark and funded with covered bonds, a long-established system that makes the group more reliant on bond markets than a pure deposit bank.
The 2008 crisis
Danske lost heavily in the financial crisis, partly through its Irish and Northern Irish units, and in 2009 took about DKK 26 billion of hybrid capital from the Danish state. It repaid the loan in April 2014. It was never nationalised, unlike ABN AMRO, which the Dutch state took over in 2008.
How to bank safely with Danske
- Keep the total you hold at Danske Bank A/S, across current, savings and fixed-term accounts, under €100,000 per person. Money in the Danish, Swedish and Finnish arms counts toward one limit.
- Investment funds and shares held in a Danske custody account are not deposits. They are your property and sit outside the bank's balance sheet, but they are not covered by the Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary.
- Use MitID or the Danske app's own approval for payments, and treat calls asking you to approve a MitID request as fraud.
