Is PicPay safe?
PicPay
Most PicPay savings sit in CDBs at PicPay Bank, a licensed Brazilian bank, covered by the FGC up to R$250,000 per person, and capital is well above the minimum. The catches are fast growth in risky consumer lending, internal-control weaknesses and close ties to its owner, J&F.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

63 out of 100, FairCET1 ratioA bank's highest-quality capital (mainly shares and retained profits) as a share of its risk-weighted assets. Higher means more room to absorb losses.More in the glossary of 15.6% and total capital ratio of 17.6% at June 2026, against a CET1 requirement of 8.5% including the conservation buffer and a 10.5% total minimum. About 1.7 points sit at the Dutch holding company, the Kovr deal takes about 1.5 points, and 9.8% of loans are 90+ days overdue.
Deposit protection20% of score
72 out of 100, GoodR$32.8 billion of customer money was in CDBs issued by PicPay Bank at June 2026, covered by Brazil's FGC up to R$250,000 per person. A further R$1.2 billion in payment accounts must be segregated and backed by investments, but is not FGC-covered. The FGC needed an emergency top-up in 2026.
Liquidity and funding15% of score
65 out of 100, FairDeposits of R$35.8 billion funded a R$31.9 billion credit portfolio at June 2026, a loan-to-deposit ratio of about 89%. Funding costs 96% of the CDI rate and increasingly comes from CDBs sold on third-party platforms and receivables funds, which can be less loyal than app balances. No Liquidity coverage ratioA bank's cash and easy-to-sell assets compared with the money that could flow out in a 30-day crisis. It must be at least 100%.More in the glossary is published.
Conduct record15% of score
62 out of 100, FairWe found no Central Bank fine against PicPay. But it identified material weaknesses in internal control for 2023 to 2025, lends to and trades with companies of its controlling J&F group, and acceded to J&F's 2017 leniency agreement (R$8.0 billion fine). In June 2026 Federal District prosecutors searched PicPay in a payroll-deduction probe; PicPay denies wrongdoing.
Digital security15% of score
65 out of 100, FairApp-only bank with biometric identity checks and Pix limits. A search found no major PicPay data breach, but Pix fraud and fake-refund scams are common in Brazil and PicPay reports transaction fraud as a recurring cost in its 20-F.
Stability history10% of score
60 out of 100, FairFounded in 2012 and owned by J&F since 2015. It lost R$693 million in 2022, turned profitable in 2023 and earned R$1.14 billion in 2025. Never rescued, but the bank licence and current lending book are young and untested in a crisis.
Is PicPay safe?
For balances under the FGC limit, yes. Most money customers keep with PicPay sits in CDBs issued by PicPay Bank – Banco Múltiplo S.A., a bank licensed and supervised by the Central Bank of Brazil, and those CDBs are covered by the Fundo Garantidor de Créditos (FGC) up to R$250,000 per person. A smaller amount sits in payment accounts at PicPay's payment institution, which must be ring-fenced but has no FGC cover. The bank's CET1 ratioA bank's highest-quality capital (mainly shares and retained profits) as a share of its risk-weighted assets. Higher means more room to absorb losses.More in the glossary of 15.6% in June 2026 was well above the 8.5% it needs. What holds the score back is how fast and how riskily it lends, weaknesses it has reported in its own internal controls, and the record of its owner, J&F. We score PicPay 65/100, below Nubank at 68 and above Mercado Pago at 60.
Which PicPay company holds your money
| Product | Entity | Protection |
|---|---|---|
| CDBs, including yield-earning balances | PicPay Bank – Banco Múltiplo S.A. | FGC, R$250,000 per person |
| Payment-account balance not in CDBs | PicPay Instituição de Pagamento S.A. | Segregated, backed by investments; no FGC |
| Insurance, funds, investments | Kovr and partners | Not deposits |
At 30 June 2026 customers held R$32.8 billion in CDBs and R$1.2 billion in payment accounts, so about 96% of user money was in the FGC-covered bank. The FGC limit counts all covered balances one person holds across a financial conglomerate. Banco Original belongs to the same controlling group, so check with the FGC before treating balances there as separate.
The fund itself was strained in 2026. After the Central Bank liquidated certain banks, the FGC board approved an emergency recapitalisation in February 2026, and PicPay advanced R$170.1 million in March. Payouts continued, but it is one more reason not to sit at the limit.
Capital, growth and bad loans

| Loans 90+ days overdue | 9.8% |
The buffer looks wide, but three things narrow it. About R$450 million, 1.7 points of the ratio, was still held by the Dutch parent and not yet injected into the bank. The Kovr insurance purchase, closed in August 2026, was expected to use about 1.5 points in the third quarter. And credit quality is weak: 9.8% of loans were more than 90 days late and 12.9% were in the credit-impaired stage 3, against 6.9% over 90 days at Nubank. PicPay says 55% of the book is now secured or partly secured, mostly private payroll loans. Profit is improving, with net income of R$269 million in the second quarter, but Brazil's BB sovereign rating caps how highly any local lender can be rated.
The J&F connection
PicPay is controlled by J&F Investimentos, the Batista family group behind JBS. In 2017 J&F signed a leniency agreement with federal prosecutors over illicit payments to politicians between 2009 and 2015, agreeing to an R$8.0 billion fine; PicPay acceded to it as a J&F affiliate, although the case did not involve its business. Brazil's Supreme Court suspended further instalments in December 2023.
The 20-F also lists loans and receivables deals between PicPay Bank and J&F companies, and says PicPay found material weaknesses in internal control over financial reporting for 2023, 2024 and 2025. None of this has led to a regulatory penalty that we found, but it is the main reason conduct scores lower than at Nubank.
A newer case is still open. On 19 June 2026 the Federal District prosecutors' office (MPDFT) served 50 search warrants in Brasília, São Paulo and Curitiba, at PicPay, the state bank BRB and the Federal District's economy department among others. The probe concerns deductions from public servants' payslips linked to payroll-loan agreements, which took more than R$80 million from salaries, according to Agência Brasil. PicPay says it offered salary advances that servants requested in the app, without intermediaries or charges, and that nothing it did was irregular. No one has been charged, and the case does not touch the bank's deposits; we will revisit the conduct score if it leads to charges or a penalty.
Fraud and scams
PicPay is an app-only bank. It uses biometric identity checks, and Brazil's Pix system lets customers set transfer limits and lower night-time caps. We found no major PicPay data breach. The bigger risk is the scams that run across all Brazilian banks: fake Central Bank refund offers, "wrong Pix" tricks and calls from fake bank staff.
How to keep money safe at PicPay
- Check in the app that your money is in a PicPay Bank CDB rather than an idle payment balance if you want FGC cover, and stay under R$250,000 per person across the group.
- Spread larger sums across unrelated banking groups.
- Set a low night-time Pix limit and require biometrics for transfers.
- Treat insurance, funds and investment products as investments, not protected savings.
How we scored it
Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary (72) is PicPay's strongest factor, because nearly all customer money sits in FGC-covered CDBs at a licensed bank. Capital (63) is comfortably above the minimum but has to carry a fast-growing, high-arrears loan book. Stability history (60) and conduct (62) are the weakest: a short track record as a bank, losses as recently as 2022, internal-control weaknesses and dealings with its controlling group.
Questions people ask
Is money in PicPay protected by the FGC?
Money in CDBs issued by PicPay Bank, where R$32.8 billion of the R$34 billion customers held sat in June 2026, is covered by the FGC up to R$250,000 per person per financial conglomerate. Plain payment-account balances at PicPay's payment institution are not FGC deposits; by law they must be kept apart from the company's own money and backed by safe investments. Check in the app which product your money is in.
Is PicPay a real bank?
Yes. PicPay Bank – Banco Múltiplo S.A. holds a multi-purpose bank licence from the Central Bank of Brazil; it was formerly Banco Original de Agronegócio. The group also runs a payment institution, PicPay Instituição de Pagamento. The parent company, PicS N.V., is incorporated in the Netherlands and listed on Nasdaq since January 2026.
Who owns PicPay?
PicPay is controlled by J&F Investimentos, the holding company of the Batista family that also controls JBS and Banco Original. Since its January 2026 Nasdaq listing, part of the shares trade publicly. Its US filings disclose loans and other transactions between PicPay Bank and J&F companies.
What happens to my money if PicPay fails?
If the Central Bank liquidated PicPay Bank, the FGC would repay CDB balances up to R$250,000 per person. Segregated payment-account money would be returned from the ring-fenced investments. Anything above the limit becomes a claim against the failed bank, which can take years.
Is PicPay safe for large amounts?
Above R$250,000, your money depends on PicPay's own finances. Capital is comfortably above the minimum, but the bank grew its loan book 99% in a year and 9.8% of loans were more than 90 days late in June 2026. Spreading large sums across unrelated banking groups keeps more of it under the FGC limit.
