Is Paytm Money safe?

Paytm Money

Paytm Money is a SEBI-registered broker owned by One 97 Communications. Your shares sit in a CDSL demat account in your name, and client cash must go to the clearing corporations each night. The broker barely breaks even, and it settled a SEBI case over IT resilience in 2025.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Investor protection30% of score

    76 out of 100, Good

Shares are held in your own CDSL demat account, and since July 2023 SEBI bars brokers from keeping client cash overnight; it goes to clearing corporations. If a broker defaults, exchange Investor Protection Funds pay claims up to a per-investor limit. No excess insurance.

  • Regulation and oversight20% of score

    82 out of 100, Good

Paytm Money is registered with SEBI as a stockbroker (INZ000240532), depository participant (CDSL) and research analyst, and is a trading and clearing member of NSE and BSE. SEBI is a statutory regulator, but not one of the top-tier regulators named in our rubric.

  • Financial strength20% of score

    62 out of 100, Fair

Paytm Money made a ₹2.5 crore profit on ₹213 crore of revenue in 2025-26 after a ₹18.9 crore loss the year before. One97 put in ₹300 crore of equity and had ₹424 crore of loans outstanding to it. The listed parent earned ₹552 crore and held ₹13,315 crore of cash.

  • Conduct record15% of score

    66 out of 100, Fair

Paytm Money paid ₹45.5 lakh in February 2025 to settle SEBI charges that it had not run a live disaster-recovery drill or connected all critical systems to log monitoring. It also paid ₹1 lakh in a 2026 industry-wide algo settlement, ₹1.06 lakh in BSE inspection penalties and ₹3.54 lakh in NSE inspection fines. We found no case of lost client assets.

  • Account security15% of score

    70 out of 100, Good

Is Paytm Money safe?

For holding Indian shares, Paytm Money is about as safe as the Indian system lets a broker be, and that system is fairly protective. Your shares sit in a demat account in your own name at CDSL, the depository. Since July 2023, SEBI has barred brokers from keeping client cash overnight. Paytm Money Limited is a SEBI-registered stockbroker and a member of NSE and BSE. We score it 72/100.

The weak points are the company behind the app, not the plumbing. The broker made just ₹2.5 crore in 2025-26, after a loss the year before, and leans on its parent for capital and margin-lending funds. In February 2025 it paid ₹45.5 lakh to settle a SEBI case over IT resilience. Its parent, One 97 Communications, also runs the Paytm payments app, whose sister bank lost its licence in 2026.

Which company holds my account?

You open your trading and demat account with Paytm Money Limited, registered in Delhi with operations in Bengaluru. It holds these licences:

Stockbroker (SEBI)INZ000240532
Depository participant (CDSL)IN-DP-416-2019, DP ID 12088800

Paytm Money is wholly owned by One 97 Communications, which is listed on NSE and BSE. The Paytm payments app and Paytm Money are separate companies with separate licences. The RBI's actions in 2024 and 2026 were against Paytm Payments Bank, not against the broker.

How are my shares and cash protected?

India protects broker clients differently from the US or UK. There is no SIPC- or Deposit insuranceA government-backed scheme that repays bank customers up to a set limit if their bank fails, such as the FDIC in the US or the FSCS in the UK.More in the glossary-style insurance. The protection comes from how assets are held.

  • Shares sit in a demat account at CDSL in your name. Paytm Money is your depository participant, but the shares are not on its balance sheet. A broker can use them as margin only after you approve a pledge.
  • Cash you add for trading may not stay with the broker overnight. Under a SEBI circular of June 2023, brokers must pass all client funds to the clearing corporations by end of day. They can hold them as cash, as bank deposits lien-marked to the clearing corporation, or as pledged units of overnight funds.
  • If a broker defaults, each exchange's Investor Protection Fund pays eligible claims up to a per-investor limit that the exchange sets with SEBI. SEBI requires exchanges to review that limit at least every three years. At NSE it is ₹35 lakh per investor, raised from ₹25 lakh for brokers declared defaulter or expelled after 13 August 2024. Claims from speculative trades are not eligible.

That set-up is why we score investor protection 76 despite the lack of an insurance scheme. We found no excess insurance above the exchange funds at Paytm Money.

Margin trading funding works differently. When you buy on margin, Paytm Money lends to you from its own resources, which One97 partly funds. The shares you buy are pledged to Paytm Money until you repay.

Is Paytm Money financially strong?

On its own, not very. One97's 2025-26 annual report shows Paytm Money earned ₹213 crore in revenue and ₹2.5 crore after tax. In 2024-25 it lost ₹18.9 crore on ₹174 crore of revenue. One97 bought ₹300 crore of new shares in 2025-26, which lifted net worth to about ₹446 crore. It also lent Paytm Money ₹1,185 crore during the year for margin lending, of which ₹424 crore was still outstanding on 31 March 2026.

The parent is in much better shape than a year ago. One97 reported ₹8,437 crore of operating revenue and its first full-year profit, ₹552 crore, in 2025-26, with ₹13,315 crore of cash. It is audited and listed, and domestic investors now hold just over half its shares.

What has SEBI found?

SEBI inspected Paytm Money and in July 2024 alleged four breaches of its technical glitch framework. The broker had not set alert thresholds for all critical systems. It had not linked them all to log monitoring, could not show evidence of peak loads, and had skipped a live disaster-recovery drill for April to September 2023. Paytm Money settled in February 2025 for ₹45.5 lakh without admitting or denying the findings. SEBI did not allege that client money was lost.

The wider group's record is weaker. In January 2025, eight former directors and officers of One97 paid SEBI about ₹3.33 crore to settle allegations over incorrect statements and incomplete disclosures in its IPO documents. The RBI cancelled the licence of Paytm Payments Bank on 24 April 2026. Neither case involved Paytm Money's clients, but both say something about the group's governance. In March 2026 Paytm Money was also one of 111 brokers that each paid ₹1 lakh to settle SEBI allegations that their trading APIs had been linked to algo platforms advertising guaranteed returns. BSE fined Paytm Money ₹1.03 lakh in July 2023 after its inspection for 2021-22 and ₹3,000 in December 2024, without giving reasons in its list; a ₹25,000 penalty from a joint inspection with SEBI, ordered in February 2025, was waived that September. NSE's file of actions taken after inspecting trading members, linked from its regulatory-actions page, lists 38 rows for Paytm Money for inspection years 2021-22 to 2025-26: 18 fines netting ₹3.54 lakh, none above ₹1 lakh, and mostly advice otherwise. Most rows come from offsite inspections; the file gives no dates or reasons, and NSE notes that the amounts may vary pending appeals. These are exchange inspection actions, not SEBI orders.

How to keep your Paytm Money account safe

  1. Keep the second login factor on your own phone, and never read an OTP to a caller.
  2. Read the CDSL statement and the exchange's trade messages, which come from them directly, not just the app.
  3. Approve margin pledges only for trades you placed yourself.
  4. Treat "Paytm Money" WhatsApp or Telegram groups that promise returns as fraud. Paytm Money says it never sends investment tips by SMS or phone.
  5. Withdraw cash you do not need for trading. The clearing corporation rules protect it from misuse, but money in your own bank is easier to reach.

How we scored it

Regulation (82) is the strongest factor: SEBI licences for broking, custody and research, plus exchange membership. Investor protection (76) credits demat accounts in your name and the 2023 cash rules, with no insurance scheme above the exchange funds. Financial strength (62) is the weakest, because the broker barely breaks even and relies on its parent. Conduct (66) reflects the 2025 SEBI settlement and the group's record. Account security scores 70.

Questions people ask

Is Paytm Money regulated by SEBI?

Yes. Paytm Money Limited holds SEBI stockbroker registration INZ000240532 and depository participant registration IN-DP-416-2019 with CDSL, and is a SEBI-registered research analyst. It is a trading and clearing member of NSE and BSE, and is registered with the PFRDA for the National Pension System.

What happens to my shares if Paytm Money shuts down?

Your shares are held in a demat account in your own name at CDSL, not in Paytm Money's books, so they can be moved to another broker's depository participant. Uninvested cash should be with the clearing corporations under SEBI's 2023 rules. If a broker defaults and money or shares are missing, you can claim from the exchange's Investor Protection Fund up to the limit that exchange sets.

Did the RBI action against Paytm affect Paytm Money?

The RBI's orders of 2024 and the licence cancellation of 24 April 2026 were aimed at Paytm Payments Bank, a separate company in the group. Paytm Money is regulated by SEBI, not the RBI, and holds client shares at CDSL. If your Paytm Money account was linked to a Paytm Payments Bank account for payments, you would have had to switch to another bank.

Is Paytm Money the same company as the Paytm app?

No. The Paytm payments app is run by One 97 Communications, and Paytm Money Limited is its wholly owned subsidiary with its own SEBI licences, board and accounts. You sign a separate account agreement with Paytm Money when you open a trading and demat account.

Why did Paytm Money pay SEBI ₹45.5 lakh?

SEBI alleged in July 2024 that Paytm Money had not met its technical glitch rules. It had not set alert thresholds for all critical systems, had not connected them all to log monitoring, could not show peak-load evidence and skipped a live disaster-recovery drill for April to September 2023. Paytm Money settled in February 2025 without admitting or denying the findings.
