Is Abu Dhabi safe?

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is quieter than Dubai and just as safe on the street, with very little theft or violence against visitors. The 2026 Iran war is the catch; falling debris from intercepted missiles killed at least three people in the city in February and March, and the US says reconsider travel to the UAE.

Is Abu Dhabi safe to visit?

On the street, it is about as safe as a big city gets. Violent crime against visitors is very rare, theft is uncommon, and 90% of people in the UAE told Gallup they feel safe walking alone at night. The capital is calmer than Dubai, with fewer crowds, less nightlife and the same visible policing.

The risk that changed in 2026 is war. Since 28 February, Iran has fired missiles and drones at the UAE, and Abu Dhabi has been hit by falling debris more than once. We score the city 81 and rate our confidence as medium because the conflict is still open. The UAE's conflict score caps any UAE city at 83; Abu Dhabi's weighted average sits just below that, so the cap does not change its score.

Missiles, drones and debris

Most projectiles aimed at the UAE are shot down. The danger in the city has been what falls afterwards. On 28 February 2026, the first day of the attacks, the UAE Ministry of Defence said debris from intercepted ballistic missiles struck a residential area of Abu Dhabi, killing one person and damaging property. On 26 March, debris from another intercepted missile fell on Sweihan Street, killing an Indian and a Pakistani national and injuring three people, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office. By then the ministry counted 372 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles and 1,826 drones engaged since February.

This is not the first time. On 17 January 2022, Yemen's Houthi movement attacked Abu Dhabi with drones. Three ADNOC fuel tankers exploded at the Musaffah depot, killing two Indians and a Pakistani and injuring six, and a fire broke out at a construction site at the airport.

Strikes paused after a US-Iran memorandum in June 2026 but resumed in July. The latest incidents over the UAE, in August, caused no reported casualties. The US State Department's advisory of 29 August keeps the UAE at Level 3 because of armed conflict and terrorism, and notes that Iran has threatened sites linked to the United States. Our UAE page tracks the national picture.

What to do as a visitor:

  • Check the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary and US State Department pages the week you travel, and again before you fly.
  • Keep emergency alerts on your phone. If one sounds, go indoors and away from windows.
  • Stay away from military bases and energy sites, and do not photograph them.
  • Expect flights to be cancelled at short notice, and carry spare medication and money.

Crime, scams and the law

Theft and robbery are rare. Beyond sensible care with your belongings, the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary's crime warnings for the UAE are about drink spiking, sexual assault and property scams. Sexual assaults are rare, but the FCDO points out that UAE law puts a high burden of proof on victims, especially when alcohol was involved, so contact your embassy early if it happens.

Most scams that reach visitors are online: fake holiday flats, too-cheap desert safaris, counterfeit tickets for Formula 1 at Yas Marina or concerts. Book through known platforms and pay by card.

More visitors get into trouble with the law than with criminals. Drug traces in your blood count as possession, swearing or rude gestures (including online) can lead to arrest, and some common medicines need approval before you bring them in. Ask your doctor or pharmacist and check the UAE Ministry of Health list before you pack.

Heat, dust and the sea

Abu Dhabi's air is its weakest point. IQAir measured an annual PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary average of 32.0 µg/m³ in 2024, more than six times the WHO guideline and the 17th worst of the capitals in its report. Most of it is desert dust, and storms can turn the sky brown for days. If you have asthma or heart disease, check the daily reading and bring your medication.

From June to September the temperature often passes 45°C. Heat illness is a real risk on desert trips, long walks and at outdoor events. Go out early or after sunset, and drink water all day. Rain is rare, but when it comes roads flood quickly, as in April 2024. At the beach, the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that rip currents can occur anywhere: swim only from approved beaches and stay out when a red flag is up.

Getting around

The emirate's roads have become safer. Abu Dhabi Police counted 149 road deaths in 2018, or 4.2 per 100,000 residents, down from 199 the year before. The Ministry of Interior counted 123 in 2024, about 3 per 100,000 for a population of 4.14 million. Driving on the long highways to Dubai and Al Ain is still fast, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary notes that speeding is common despite speed cameras. Use licensed taxis or a reputable app rather than lifts from strangers, and cross only at marked crossings.

How we scored it

Theft (90), night safety (90) and traffic (85) are close to the best on our list. Health and environment (60) is the weakest factor because of dust and heat. Violent crime (84) includes a deduction for the missile debris that killed people in the city in 2026; without the war, Abu Dhabi would score about 84, a few points behind Singapore. Doha faces the same mix of risks.
