Is Barcelona safe?

Barcelona

Barcelona is very safe from violent crime and traffic, but it is Europe's best-known city for pickpocketing. Expect to be targeted on La Rambla, metro line 3 and Barceloneta beach, and plan for it.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Violent crime25% of score

    90 out of 100, Excellent

Mossos d'Esquadra figures show 5 homicides in the first half of 2025, down from 10, in a city of about 1.7 million. Knife crime rose 38% in the same period, and phone snatches with force are the most common violent crime visitors meet.

  • Theft and scams20% of score

    50 out of 100, Weak

Police recorded 87,321 thefts in 2025, about 239 a day, despite this being the lowest level since 2015. Pickpocket teams, fake police and watch snatchers target tourists on La Rambla, the metro and the beaches.

  • Walking at night15% of score

    76 out of 100, Good

In the EU's 2023 city survey 68% of residents of greater Barcelona felt safe walking alone at night in the city and 74% in their own area. We deduct 1 point because knife crime and reported sexual assaults rose in 2025. El Raval, the Gothic Quarter's back lanes and the Port Olímpic clubs see most late robberies and drink spiking.

  • Traffic safety15% of score

    87 out of 100, Excellent

Barcelona recorded 20 traffic deaths in 2023 (city council data), about 1.2 per 100,000, with motorcyclists and pedestrians most at risk. Mopeds and e-scooters weaving through traffic are the main hazard.

  • Health and environment15% of score

    84 out of 100, Good

Air quality has improved with the low emission zone but PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary and nitrogen dioxide remain above WHO guidelines on busy streets. Tap water is safe though heavily treated, and public hospitals are good.

  • Natural hazards10% of score

    85 out of 100, Excellent

Earthquake risk is low. Summer heat, drought (Catalonia declared a drought emergency in 2024) and sudden autumn rainstorms are the main hazards, and they are rarely dangerous for visitors.

Is Barcelona safe?

Yes, unless you count your phone. Barcelona has very little lethal violence: the Catalan police recorded five homicides in the city in the first half of 2025, half the number of a year earlier. But the same police logged 87,321 thefts in 2025, about 239 a day, and a large share of them were against visitors. Even that is the lowest level in a decade.

So the question for most people is not whether they will be hurt, but whether they will spend a day of their holiday at a police station filing a report. We score Barcelona 78, level with Paris and above Rome. For the rest of the country, see our Spain page.

Where you are most likely to be robbed

Theft is concentrated where tourists are. The places locals warn about:

  • La Rambla and the Liceu and Catalunya metro stations. The densest pickpocket zone in the city, day and night.
  • Metro line 3 (green). It links Sants, Passeig de Gràcia, Catalunya, Liceu and Drassanes, so it carries tourists all day. Line 5 to Sagrada Família is the next worst.
  • Sagrada Família and Park Güell. Queues and crowds taking photos.
  • Barceloneta and the beaches up to Bogatell. Bags and phones on towels.
  • Sants station and the airport. Luggage theft while you check in, buy tickets or collect a hire car, as the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns.
  • Terrace cafés. A map or menu is laid over your phone on the table, then lifted with it.

The tricks are well known. Someone points out bird droppings or ketchup on your back and offers to clean it. A football player tries a trick move with your leg. A shell game crowd on La Rambla hides the pickpocket. Two plain-clothes "police" ask to check your wallet. And on the streets around the port and the Eixample, gangs follow people wearing expensive watches and snatch them, sometimes with force.

How to avoid becoming a statistic

  • Carry a cross-body bag with a zip and keep it in front, especially on the metro and La Rambla.
  • Keep your phone in a front pocket or on a strap. Never leave it on a table.
  • Leave your passport in the hotel safe and carry a photocopy or photo of it.
  • Do not wear an expensive watch on nights out.
  • At the beach, bring only a little cash and a phone in a waterproof pouch you can take into the water.
  • If someone stops you with a distraction, put your hand on your bag and walk on.

After dark

Barcelona eats and goes out late, and the main streets are full of people past midnight. The Eixample, Gràcia, Poblenou and Sant Antoni feel safe at that hour. El Raval, the narrow lanes in the lower Gothic Quarter and the strip of clubs at Port Olímpic are where late-night robberies, fights and drink spiking cluster. Police data show reported sexual assaults rose 4.4% to 1,179 in 2025. In the European Commission's 2023 survey of city residents, 68% in greater Barcelona said they feel safe walking alone at night in the city and 74% in their own neighbourhood, level with Lisbon and a little below Madrid (70%). Buy your own drinks, keep them in sight, and take a taxi home from the beach clubs. Official taxis are black and yellow, and FreeNow and Cabify also work in the city.

Knife crime rose 38% in the first half of 2025, according to the Mossos, and police seized more knives. This mostly involves robberies and fights between young men. Hand over a phone or watch if threatened; nothing is worth a stab wound.

Traffic, heat and water

Traffic is not a big danger. Barcelona recorded 20 road deaths in 2023, about 1.2 per 100,000 people, but the city has many mopeds and delivery riders. Pedestrians and motorcyclists account for most of the dead. Look both ways at crossings, and watch for scooters on the pavement.

The low emission zone has cut pollution, but the busiest streets still exceed WHO guidelines. Summers are hot and humid, and the city opens "climate shelters" in libraries and public buildings during heatwaves. Catalonia declared a drought emergency in 2024 that limited water use. Tap water is safe though it tastes of chlorine; most locals drink filtered or bottled. In autumn, short violent rainstorms can flood streets for an hour or two.

Where to stay

For a first visit, look at the Eixample near Passeig de Gràcia, which puts you near the sights but off the pickpocket hot spots, or at Gràcia for a quieter neighbourhood feel. Poblenou is close to the beach without the late-night crowds of Barceloneta. If you stay in El Raval or the Gothic Quarter, choose a hotel on a main street. Compare Paris, the other big European pickpocket capital, or Istanbul for a very different city break.

How we scored it

Violent crime (90) and traffic (87) are strong. Theft and scams (50) is the lowest score of any European city we cover and drags the overall result down. Walking at night (76) follows the EU's 2023 survey of residents, which we use for every European city, less 1 point for rising knife crime and late-night trouble in El Raval and at the beachfront clubs.

Questions people ask

Is La Rambla safe?

It is safe from violent crime and full of people day and night, but it has the highest concentration of pickpockets in the city. Walk it with your bag zipped in front of you, phone in a front pocket, and ignore anyone who stops you to point at a stain on your clothes or play a shell game.

Is it safe to leave things on the beach in Barcelona?

No. Bags and phones left on towels at Barceloneta and nearby beaches are stolen constantly, often while their owners are in the sea. Bring only what you need and take turns swimming, or use a waterproof phone pouch.

What is the fake police scam in Barcelona?

Men in plain clothes show a badge and ask to check your wallet or passport for "counterfeit money" or drugs, then palm cash or cards. The UK FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns about it in Spain. Real police will not ask to inspect your cash; offer to go to the nearest station instead.

Which area is safest to stay in Barcelona?

The Eixample (around Passeig de Gràcia), Gràcia and Sant Gervasi are central, residential and calm at night. El Raval and the lower Gothic Quarter are cheaper and atmospheric but have more theft and late-night trouble.

Is the Barcelona metro safe at night?

Yes in terms of violence. Pickpocketing is the risk at any hour, especially on line 3 between Catalunya, Liceu and Drassanes, and on lines to Sagrada Família. On Friday nights the metro runs late and on Saturday it runs all night.
