Is Cancún safe?
Cancún
Cancún's hotel zone is one of the most heavily guarded tourist strips in Mexico, and murders in the city fell by about 40% in 2025. Gang violence downtown, taxi and price scams, fast roads, rip currents and the June to November hurricane season are the risks to plan for.

50 out of 100, WeakCancún sits on a low barrier island in the Atlantic hurricane belt. Hurricane Beryl made landfall just north-east of Tulum on 5 July 2024 and the NHC says the worst flooding and outages were between Tulum and Cancún.
Is Cancún safe?
For a typical holiday in the hotel zone, yes, but it is not as calm as the resort brochures suggest. The municipality of Benito Juárez, which covers Cancún, recorded 115 murders from January to July 2025, down from 186 a year earlier and 229 in 2023, according to figures the mayor presented in August 2025. At that pace, the rate is roughly 20 per 100,000 a year: below Mexico's national average, but more than double Mexico City's.
Almost all of that violence is between gangs fighting over local drug sales in inland neighbourhoods. Visitors are rarely the target, though they have been caught up in shootings across the Riviera Maya. We score Cancún 55, a little below Mexico City and well below Miami, mainly because of crime levels, fast roads and hurricane exposure.
The hotel zone and the rest of the city
Cancún has two very different halves. The hotel zone (Zona Hotelera) is a 22 km barrier island shaped like a figure 7, with almost all the big resorts, Coco Bongo and the clubs at Punta Cancún, and heavy police, army and National Guard patrols. Downtown (El Centro) is where residents live and work, and it is where most crime happens.
The UK Foreign Office says rival gangs have clashed in popular Cancún tourist areas and advises being very cautious after dark downtown, in Tulum and in Playa del Carmen. It also reports that criminals have physically and sexually assaulted British travellers in these resorts, in some cases with hotel staff, taxi drivers or security guards involved.
The US State Department rates Mexico as a whole at Level 2, exercise increased caution, and Quintana Roo has not been among its high-risk states. Its advisory warns of crime and kidnapping and asks travellers to use app-based services or taxis from regulated stands rather than hailing cars in the street.
Scams, taxis and drinks
The everyday risks are about money:
- Fake police. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns of criminals posing as officers who try to fine or arrest visitors. Ask for a written ticket to pay at a police station.
- ATMs and cards. Use machines inside banks, malls or your hotel in daylight, and watch for skimmers. Pay in pesos when offered the choice.
- Taxis. Fares in the hotel zone are fixed by zone, but drivers often quote more. Agree the price before you get in. Taxi protests against Uber have blocked roads and, the FCDO says, drivers have pulled tourists from Uber cars.
- Timeshare and tour touts at the airport and on the street. Book tours through your hotel or a known operator.
Drink spiking happens in clubs, and the FCDO warns that methanol-tainted alcohol has caused deaths and serious illness in Mexico. Drink sealed beer or bottled spirits in established bars, and watch your glass being poured.
Roads, beaches and the sea
The roads are a bigger risk than most visitors expect. SESNSP data show 69 road deaths in Benito Juárez in the first half of 2025, almost half of Quintana Roo's 147. That is roughly 14 per 100,000 a year, higher than Miami. Kukulcán Boulevard through the hotel zone is fast and poorly lit at night, and pedestrians are hit crossing it between hotels and bars. Motorbike riders account for many deaths. If you hire a car for Tulum or Chichén Itzá, use the toll road and drive only in daylight.
The sea needs the same respect. The long east-facing beaches from Punta Cancún to Punta Nizuc have big waves and strong rip currents. The north-facing beaches looking towards Isla Mujeres are calmer and better for children. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary notes that crocodiles live in the Nichupté lagoon behind the hotels, so do not swim there.
Sargassum seaweed is a nuisance rather than a danger. It usually washes up on the Caribbean coast between spring and early autumn, and rotting piles give off hydrogen sulphide gas that irritates the eyes and airways.
Hurricanes
Cancún is one of the most hurricane-exposed resort cities in the Americas. The season runs from June to November, with the peak from August to October. Hurricane Beryl made landfall just north-east of Tulum on 5 July 2024 as a FAA IASAThe US FAA's check of whether a country's aviation regulator meets ICAO standards. Category 1 means it does; Category 2 means it does not.More in the glossary storm, and the US National Hurricane Center reports that the worst flooding and power cuts were on the coast from Tulum to Cancún. Hurricane Wilma in 2005 caused severe damage to the hotel zone.
Forecasts give days of warning, and resorts have storm shelters and evacuation plans. Follow the National Hurricane Center, keep your passport and medicines with you, and do what your hotel and local authorities tell you.
How to stay safe in Cancún
- Stay in the hotel zone for the calmest nights; downtown hotels are fine but take a taxi after dark.
- Use your hotel's taxi, a pre-booked shuttle or an app, and agree any street fare first.
- Withdraw cash inside a bank or hotel and keep cards in sight.
- Swim at lifeguarded beaches and respect red flags.
- In hurricane season, buy insurance that covers storm disruption.

How we scored it
Health and environment (72) is the strongest factor: clean air and good private hospitals. Road safety (42) is the weakest, followed by violent crime and natural hazards (both 50), which reflect a murder rate of roughly 20 per 100,000 and real hurricane exposure. If the 2025 fall in murders holds, the violent crime score would rise.
Questions people ask
Is the Cancún hotel zone safe?
Yes, for most visitors. The 22 km strip of hotels between the lagoon and the sea has its own tourist police, army and National Guard patrols, and serious crime against guests is rare. Gang shootings have occasionally reached beaches and bars, so follow staff instructions and leave any area where trouble starts.
Is downtown Cancún safe at night?
The area around Avenida Tulum, Parque de las Palapas and the bus station is fine in the early evening, but the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises being very cautious downtown after dark. Most of the city's murders happen in residential neighbourhoods (regiones) inland that visitors have no reason to visit. Take a booked taxi or app ride back to your hotel.
Can I use Uber in Cancún?
Uber operates, but licensed taxi drivers have protested against it, blocked roads near the hotels and pulled tourists out of Uber cars, according to the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary. At the airport, use the authorised pre-paid taxis or a shuttle you booked in advance. Agree the fare before getting into a street taxi.
When is sargassum season in Cancún?
Sargassum seaweed usually arrives on Caribbean-facing beaches from about April to September, worst in early summer. It is not dangerous to touch fresh, but rotting piles smell of rotten eggs (hydrogen sulphide) and can irritate people with asthma. Beaches on the north side facing Isla Mujeres, such as Playa Langosta, are usually less affected.
Is it safe to swim in Cancún?
The calm north-facing beaches (Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol) are the safest. On the long east-facing stretch, waves and rip currents are strong enough to pull out good swimmers. Swim near a lifeguard and respect the flags, especially red and black.
