Is Edinburgh safe?
Edinburgh
Edinburgh is one of the safest big cities in Britain, with under 1 homicide per 100,000 people, air close to the WHO guideline and few road deaths. The main risks are pickpockets in the August festival crowds and drunken trouble in the Old Town late at night.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Violent crime25% of score
92 out of 100, ExcellentPolice Scotland recorded 4 murders and culpable homicides in Edinburgh in 2025-26, 0.75 per 100,000 (Scottish Government). Serious assaults fell 8% to 227, and robbery fell 7% to 259. Most violence involves people who know each other.
Theft and scams20% of score
75 out of 100, GoodRecorded thefts other than shoplifting and housebreaking fell 8% to 5,517 in 2025-26. Pickpocketing peaks during the August festivals on the Royal Mile, Princes Street and around Waverley station, when police run extra patrols.
Walking at night15% of score
80 out of 100, GoodEdinburgh is not in the EU's 2023 city survey; in Glasgow, the nearest surveyed city, 70% of residents felt safe walking alone at night (79% in their own area). We add 2 points because Edinburgh has far less violence. The Cowgate, Grassmarket and Lothian Road are the late-night drinking strips, and park paths are best avoided alone.
Traffic safety15% of score
90 out of 100, Excellent8 people died on Edinburgh's roads in 2024 and an average of 5 a year over 2020-24 (Transport Scotland), about 1.5 per 100,000 in 2024. Five of the 2024 deaths were pedestrians, and tram rails catch bike wheels.
Health and environment15% of score
90 out of 100, ExcellentAll council monitors recorded annual PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary of 4.6 to 6.1 µg/m³ in 2024, around the WHO guideline of 5 and below Scotland's own limit of 10. Tap water is safe, and the Royal Infirmary has a major trauma centre, though NHS waits can be long.
Natural hazards10% of score
93 out of 100, ExcellentLow exposure. Winter storms, coastal haar and occasional flooding along the Water of Leith are the main hazards; there is no real earthquake or heat risk. Most injuries outdoors come from falls on Arthur's Seat and the crags in wet or windy weather.
Is Edinburgh safe?
Edinburgh is a very safe city to visit. Police Scotland recorded 4 murders and culpable homicides in the City of Edinburgh in 2025-26, about 0.75 per 100,000 of its 530,000 residents, and road deaths are low too. The air is among the cleanest of any European capital. What a visitor is most likely to meet is a pickpocket in the August crowds or a drunken argument on the Cowgate at 3am.
We score Edinburgh 86. That is above London (81) and Dublin (84), and close to Sydney. The United Kingdom as a whole scores 88, helped by rural areas and very safe roads.
What the crime figures say
The Scottish Government publishes recorded crime for each council area. For Edinburgh in 2025-26 it shows:
- Total crimes: 39,483, or 744 per 10,000 people, above the Scottish average. Much of that is shoplifting, which rose 32% to 10,595 cases.
- Serious assault and attempted murder: 227, down 8% on the year and down 45% since 2016-17.
- Robbery: 259, down 7%.
- Other theft (the category that includes pickpocketing and bike theft): 5,517, down 8%.
The city's homicide count has stayed small for years: 20 victims in the five years to 2024-25, compared with 42 in the five years to 2009-10. Most violence happens between people who know each other or among late-night drinkers, not to tourists.
The US State Department rates the whole UK Level 2, "exercise increased caution", because of terrorism. That applies to Edinburgh as much as to London; expect bag checks at big events.
Festival season and the crowds
In August, Edinburgh hosts the International Festival, the Fringe and the Military Tattoo at the same time. The Fringe alone issued 2,805,395 tickets over 25 days in 2026, with more than 164,000 on its busiest day. The Royal Mile becomes a slow-moving crowd of street performers and flyer teams, and that is when pickpockets work.
Police Scotland runs a summer operation in the city centre with extra patrols, plain-clothes officers and a mobile police point in Princes Street Gardens. Watch your phone and bag in these places:
- The Royal Mile around St Giles' Cathedral and the street performers.
- Princes Street and the steps up from Waverley station.
- The Castle Esplanade queues and the Tattoo crowds.
- Busy festival bars and venues in the Pleasance, Bristo Square and George Square, where bags hang on chairs.
Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) brings similar crowds to Princes Street, with ticketed street party areas and bag checks.
Edinburgh at night
The New Town, Stockbridge, Bruntsfield and the main streets of Leith are calm late at night. The rowdy areas are the Cowgate, the Grassmarket and Lothian Road, where pubs and clubs empty at the same time and fights start in taxi queues. That is unpleasant rather than dangerous for a visitor who keeps walking.
The places to avoid alone after dark are the open spaces: the Meadows, Calton Hill, the paths in Princes Street Gardens and Holyrood Park. They are busy and safe by day.
The European Commission's 2023 survey of how safe residents feel at night did not include Edinburgh. In Glasgow, 70% said they feel safe walking alone at night in the city and 79% in their own neighbourhood, against 60% in London. Edinburgh has had less than half Glasgow's homicides over five years while Glasgow's population is only about a fifth larger, which is why we score it a little above Glasgow's figure.
Roads, hills and weather
Transport Scotland counted 8 deaths on Edinburgh's roads in 2024, about 1.5 per 100,000 people, and an average of 5 a year over 2020-24. Five of the 2024 victims were pedestrians. Traffic drives on the left, so look right first. If you cycle, cross the tram tracks on Princes Street and Leith Walk at a sharp angle: a wheel caught in the rail is a common cause of falls.
The bigger injury risk for many visitors is Arthur's Seat. The main path is easy, but the Salisbury Crags and the steep eastern side are slippery when wet, and people fall each year. Go in daylight with proper shoes, and skip it in strong wind.
The air is excellent. City monitors recorded PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary between 4.6 and 6.1 µg/m³ in 2024, around the WHO guideline. Natural hazards are mild: winter storms, sea fog (haar) and occasional flooding along the Water of Leith.
How to stay safe in Edinburgh
- In August, carry less: one card, a phone in a front pocket, a zipped bag worn in front.
- Use black cabs from ranks or app taxis after midnight rather than walking through parks.
- Book accommodation in the New Town, Stockbridge or Bruntsfield if you want quiet nights.
- Pack a waterproof layer even in summer, and check the forecast before any hill walk.
How we scored it
Violent crime (92), health and environment (90) and traffic safety (90) are Edinburgh's strongest factors. Theft and scams (75) is the weakest, driven by festival pickpocketing rather than year-round risk. Walking at night (80) uses Glasgow's answer to the EU's 2023 survey, since Edinburgh was not surveyed, plus 2 points for Edinburgh's lower violence; the late-night drinking strips in the Old Town are the weak spot.
Questions people ask
Is Edinburgh safe during the Fringe?
Yes, but it is the time to watch your bag. The city fills up in August, the Royal Mile and Princes Street are packed, and pickpockets follow the crowds. Police add patrols and a mobile police point in Princes Street Gardens. Keep phones in a front pocket and bags zipped while you watch street acts.
Is it safe to walk in Edinburgh at night?
Mostly, yes. The Old Town, New Town and Leith are fine on main streets. The Cowgate and Grassmarket get rowdy after the clubs close, and the Meadows, Calton Hill and the paths below the castle are dark and best avoided alone late at night.
Is it safe to climb Arthur's Seat?
The main path from Holyrood Park is a steep but easy hill walk. People get hurt when they leave the path for the Salisbury Crags or go up in strong wind, rain or the dark. Wear proper shoes and come down before sunset.
Which areas of Edinburgh are safest to stay in?
The New Town, Stockbridge, Bruntsfield, Marchmont and the West End are quiet and central. The Old Town is the most convenient but noisy at night. Some outer estates such as Niddrie or Muirhouse have more crime, but visitors have little reason to go there.
Is Edinburgh safer than Glasgow?
On the numbers, yes for violence. Glasgow recorded 48 homicide victims in the five years to 2024-25 against 20 in Edinburgh, with a population only about a fifth larger, though both cities are safe for visitors who stay in the centre and use normal care at night.
