Is Kathmandu safe?
Kathmandu
Kathmandu is a low-crime city where the bigger risks are physical. The valley's air averaged nine times the WHO guideline in 2024, it sits on one of the world's most active fault lines, its streets belong to motorbikes, and the September 2025 protests showed how fast politics can turn violent here.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Violent crime25% of score
80 out of 100, GoodNepal's last national homicide figure is 2.13 per 100,000 (2020, UNODC), and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary calls serious crime low. We score below the band's middle because of sexual assaults in Thamel and Sanepa, night robberies and the September 2025 protests, when police shot dead 19 protesters on one day, most of them in Kathmandu.
Theft and scams20% of score

Taxi overcharging is routine, and the FCDO has isolated reports of trekking guides who rush clients to altitude, then call a costly helicopter rescue and take a cut.
Walking at night15% of score
60 out of 100, FairGallup's 2025 report puts Nepal at 63% feeling safe walking alone at night, well below Vietnam (88%) and India (72%). Traffic safety15% of score
50 out of 100, WeakValley Traffic Police counted 178 road deaths in the 11 months to mid-June 2023 (about 6 per 100,000; 56 pedestrians). Police counts miss most deaths (WHO puts Nepal at 36.2 per 100,000, about four times the police rate), so we score well below the police figure. Speeding motorbikes cause most deaths; pavements are narrow or missing.

Floods on 27–28 September 2024 killed at least 34 people in Kathmandu (AP).
Is Kathmandu safe?
Yes for crime, less so for everything else. Nepal's last national homicide figure is 2.13 per 100,000 (2020, UNODC), and the UK Foreign Office calls serious crime low. What makes Kathmandu harder than its crime rate suggests is physical: air that averaged 45.1 µg/m³ of PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary in 2024, nine times the WHO guideline, a valley on one of the world's most active fault lines, and streets where motorbikes kill more people than criminals do.
We score Kathmandu 59 out of 100, above Delhi and below Hanoi. Our Nepal page covers the flood zone, mountain flights and trekking.
Thamel, scams and theft
Most visitors stay in Thamel, the dense grid of guesthouses, bars and trekking shops north of the old city. It is busy late into the evening and generally safe while the lanes are full. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary names Thamel, Sanepa and Kupondol as the places where pickpockets and bag-snatchers work, along with the airport and buses, and it reports drink spiking.
The scams are mostly about money. Taxis rarely use meters, so agree the fare or book through Pathao or inDrive. The costlier trap starts in Kathmandu but plays out in the mountains: the FCDO has isolated reports of guides who take clients up too fast and then call a helicopter rescue, taking a cut of the insurer's payment. A trek that is far cheaper than the rest probably saves money somewhere. Book with a registered agency and check what the price includes.
Walking at night and women's safety
Gallup's 2025 report found 63% of people in Nepal feel safe walking alone at night where they live, a low share for Asia and well below Vietnam's 88% or India's 72%. Part of the reason is practical: many side streets are poorly lit, pavements are broken, and stray dogs gather after dark.
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says women have been sexually assaulted in tourist areas such as Thamel and Sanepa, and that assaults and robberies are more likely in the evening in poorly lit areas. It advises not to walk alone at night. For a late return to your guesthouse, use a ride app or ask the hotel to send a car, and keep to the main lanes.
The air and your health
Kathmandu was the eighth most polluted capital in IQAir's 2024 report, close behind Hanoi. The valley acts as a bowl: from about November to April, dust from roads and building sites, vehicle exhaust, brick kilns and smoke from forest fires collect under still air. The monsoon rains from June to September wash it out. People with asthma or heart disease should check an air quality app daily and carry well-fitted N95 masks.
Tap water is not safe to drink, dengue is present in the valley, and rabies is carried by street dogs. There is no central public ambulance service; in an emergency, the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says to call the nearest hospital. The private hospitals and travel clinics in the valley are the best in the country, but they are expensive and often want payment or an insurance guarantee first.
Traffic
The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police Office counted 178 road deaths in the 11 months to mid-June 2023, and 88 in the six months to mid-January 2024. On a valley population of about 3 million that is roughly 6 deaths per 100,000, lower than Nepal's national rate, but pedestrians are nearly a third of the dead (56 of the 178). Police say speeding motorbikes and scooters cause the most deaths. Ring Road and the main arteries have fast traffic, few working crossings and narrow or missing pavements.
Walk on the inside, cross with groups of locals, and wear a helmet on any motorbike taxi. Avoid long walks on Ring Road at night, when lighting is poor.
Earthquakes, floods and politics
The 2015 Gorkha earthquake killed about 9,000 people across Nepal and brought down houses, temples in Kathmandu's Durbar Square and the Dharahara tower. Another large quake is expected one day. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that a lack of emergency equipment and poorly resourced medical facilities would worsen its impact. Floods are the yearly hazard: on 27–28 September 2024, the Bagmati and its tributaries burst their banks and at least 34 people died in Kathmandu, according to AP.
Politics can also turn deadly. During the Gen Z protests against a social media ban, police killed 19 protesters on 8 September 2025, most of them in Kathmandu, and at least 75 people died nationwide by the end of the month. Life returned to normal after the March 2026 elections, but protests and strikes still start at short notice.
How to stay safe in Kathmandu
- Book rides through Pathao or inDrive, especially after dark.
- Choose a hotel built after 2015 or retrofitted, and learn the exits on arrival.
- Wear an N95 mask on bad air days from November to April.
- Drink only bottled or filtered water.
- Avoid demonstrations near Maitighar, New Baneshwor and Singha Durbar.
- Save 100 (police) and 1144 (tourist police), plus your hotel's nearest hospital.
How we scored it
Violent crime (80) and theft and scams (68) are Kathmandu's strongest factors. Natural hazards (35) is the weakest, because of the valley's earthquake risk and yearly floods, followed by health and environment (38) for the air. Traffic (50) and walking at night (60) sit in the middle. Confidence is medium because there is no city homicide figure and the latest full road death count is from 2023.
Questions people ask

From about November to April, the dry season, when dust, traffic smoke, brick kilns and forest fires collect in the valley under still air. Monsoon rain clears it from June to September. On bad days wear a well-fitted N95 mask on the streets and plan the walk around Swayambhunath or Bhaktapur for a clearer morning.
Is Kathmandu safe after the 2025 protests?

What should I do in an earthquake in Kathmandu?
Drop, cover and hold on until the shaking stops, then move to open ground away from walls, power lines and old brick buildings. Learn the exits in your hotel on arrival, keep water and a torch in your room, and expect phones, roads and the airport to be disrupted for days after a big quake.
Can I drink tap water in Kathmandu?
No. Drink sealed bottled or filtered water, which most hotels and cafés provide. Avoid ice and raw salads from street stalls; stomach bugs are the most common health problem for visitors.
