Is Kraków safe?

Yes. Kraków is one of the safest cities in Central Europe for anything serious, and most visitors who have a bad experience lose money rather than get hurt. Eurostat counts 4 intentional homicides in the city in 2024, about 0.5 per 100,000 people, and city police recorded only 5 road deaths in 2025. In the European Commission's 2023 survey of city residents, 79% said they feel safe walking alone at night.

Three things are worth planning for: pickpockets in the Old Town and at stations, overcharging in some bars and clubs, and smog on still winter days. We score Kraków 84, a little above Prague and close to Vienna. For the rest of the country, see our Poland page.

Pickpockets and where they work

Recorded theft fell to 2,508 cases in 2024, about 315 per 100,000 people and a quarter fewer than in 2023. That is low for a city with Kraków's visitor numbers, but tourists are a target. The UK Foreign Office says criminals see foreigners as easy targets and names crowded areas, tourist spots, main rail stations and trains. In Kraków that means:

  • The Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), especially around the Cloth Hall and the crowd watching the trumpeter at St Mary's Basilica on the hour.
  • Floriańska Street and the Barbican, the busiest walk in the Old Town.
  • Kraków Główny station and Galeria Krakowska, the shopping centre next to it, where people arrive with luggage.
  • The airport train and buses, and night trams after the bars close.

Keep phones off café tables and bags zipped in front of you. Report thefts at any police station; officers in the centre are used to foreign visitors.

Bars, clubs and stag parties

Kraków's Old Town and Kazimierz have one of the densest bar scenes in Europe, and they are generally safe. The money risk is concentrated in a few places. Touts and friendly women near the Rynek and Floriańska invite men into clubs where the drinks are expensive and the bill at the end is far higher than expected. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that visitors have been overcharged when paying by card at the end of the night, and that victims of spiked drinks have been robbed in bars and clubs.

  • Choose bars yourself and ignore anyone who approaches you in the street with an offer.
  • Check the menu prices, pay for each round and check the amount on the card machine before entering your PIN.
  • Do not leave drinks unattended.

Stag groups are the main source of trouble on weekend nights. Police can take very drunk people to a sobering-up centre, where you stay until sober and pay for it. For taxis, the FCDO says to use official ones with the company name and phone number on the door and a rate card on the window, or a ride-hailing app.

Residents are relaxed about the city at night. Kraków ranked 22nd of 80 cities in the EU's 2023 survey, close to Warsaw (78%) and well ahead of Budapest and Prague.

Smog: the winter catch

Air quality is Kraków's weakest point. IQAir puts the 2024 annual PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary average at 17.7 µg/m³, 3.9 times the WHO guideline. The city itself banned burning coal and wood for heating in 2019, but villages and towns around it still use old stoves and boilers, and Kraków sits in the Vistula valley, where cold, still air traps smoke. On 20 January 2026 IQAir listed it among the most polluted cities in the world, with an index of 249, "very unhealthy".

For most visitors a few smoggy days do no lasting harm. If you have asthma or a heart or lung condition, check the air index each morning in winter, plan indoor days when it is high, and carry your medication. Summer air is much cleaner.

Tap water is safe to drink, and hospital care, including the University Hospital, is good. EU visitors can use an EHIC.

Roads, trams and day trips

Traffic in the city is not a real danger. City police recorded 930 accidents in 2025, with 1,012 people injured and 5 killed, about 0.6 deaths per 100,000 residents. Watch for trams in the centre and for cyclists and e-scooters on shared paths. Police can fine you for jaywalking.

Day trips carry more road risk than the city. The road south to Zakopane is often congested at weekends, so a train or coach is a calmer choice. For the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial in Oświęcim, about 70 km west, book entry on the Memorial's website in advance, then go by train, bus or a licensed tour. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is a short trip south-east.

Natural hazards are modest: no earthquakes, occasional Vistula flooding, and summer heatwaves and thunderstorms. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary notes that drone incursions closed Polish airports temporarily in September 2025; check your flight if alerts are reported.

How we scored it

Violent crime (92) and traffic safety (92) are Kraków's strongest factors. Health and environment (74) is the weakest, because of winter smog. Theft and scams (72) reflects Old Town pickpocketing and bar overcharging. Walking at night (84) follows the EU's 2023 survey of residents, which we use for every European city.

Questions people ask

Is Kraków safe at night?

Yes, for most visitors. The Main Market Square, the Old Town and Kazimierz are busy and policed late, and 79% of residents told the EU's 2023 survey they feel safe walking alone at night. The problems after dark are drunken stag groups and touts pulling people into clubs. Walk through the park ring (Planty) on lit paths and take a licensed taxi or app ride home.

What is the bar scam in Kraków?

Friendly women or touts near the Main Market Square and Floriańska Street invite men, often in stag groups, to a club. Drinks arrive, and the card bill at the end runs to thousands of złoty. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that visitors have been overcharged when paying by card at the end of the night and that spiked drinks have been used to rob people. Choose bars yourself, check prices and pay as you go.

Is the smog in Kraków dangerous for visitors?

On a short trip it is mostly unpleasant, but on still winter days PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary can reach very unhealthy levels, especially from December to February. People with asthma or heart and lung conditions should check an air quality app, cut long walks on bad days and carry their medication. Summer air is much cleaner.

Is it safe to visit Auschwitz from Kraków?

Yes. The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial is in Oświęcim, about 70 km west of Kraków. Book entry on the Memorial's official website well ahead, as guided slots sell out in summer, and use a licensed tour company or the train or bus rather than unofficial drivers touting at the station. Expect security checks and limits on bag size.

Which area is safest to stay in Kraków?

The Old Town, Kazimierz, Podgórze and Kleparz are safe and walkable. Rooms right on the Main Market Square or Floriańska Street can be noisy at night. Around the main station and Galeria Krakowska, watch your bags but there is no need to avoid the area.
