Is Nairobi safe?

Nairobi

Nairobi is a city where your choices matter. Muggings, armed robbery and carjacking are frequent, the UK warns against walking alone in isolated areas even by day, and protests have turned deadly. Visitors who move by car, stay in the western suburbs and avoid crowds rarely have problems.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Violent crime25% of score

    55 out of 100, Fair

Kenya recorded 4.9 Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary in 2022 (UNODC via World Bank); no official Nairobi rate is published. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary reports frequent muggings, armed robbery and carjacking in big cities, and we deduct for terrorism and deadly protest violence.

  • Walking at night15% of score

    35 out of 100, Poor

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against walking alone in isolated areas even in daylight and names the CBD, Eastleigh, Kibera and Mathare as higher-risk. After dark, residents and visitors drive or take ride apps for even short trips.

  • Traffic safety15% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

NTSA counted 4,458 road deaths in Kenya by 2 December 2025, more than in all of 2024, and pedestrians were the largest group at 1,685. Nairobi's crowded roads, matatus and boda-boda motorbikes make walking along main roads risky.

  • Health and environment15% of score

    60 out of 100, Fair

IQAir measured PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary of 14.4 µg/m³ in Nairobi in 2024, about three times the WHO guideline. Private hospitals are good, but the US State Department says care is limited elsewhere and payment is required upfront. Drink bottled water.

  • Natural hazards10% of score

    75 out of 100, Good

The long rains from March to May bring flash floods to low-lying areas along the city's rivers. Altitude keeps heat mild.

Is Nairobi safe?

Safe enough for a careful visitor, with more real risk than most cities we cover. The UK Foreign Office describes frequent violent crime in Kenya's large cities, including mugging, armed robbery and carjacking, and warns that it has killed British nationals, sometimes in daylight. The US State Department adds that local police are often unable to respond effectively. Kenya's Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary was 4.9 per 100,000 in 2022 (UNODC), and Nairobi publishes no city figure of its own.

Yet thousands of tourists pass through every week on their way to safaris, and the large expatriate and UN community lives in the city without drama. The difference is routine: drive rather than walk, stay in the western suburbs, and keep away from crowds. We score Nairobi 50, close to Bogotá and above Cape Town.

Where crime happens

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary names the Central Business District, Eastleigh, Mathare, Kibera and other informal settlements as higher-risk areas. The CBD is busy and fine at midday for a short visit, but it empties after office hours and that is when muggings rise. Kenya's National Police Service has reported waves of street muggings in Nairobi, linked to gangs such as Gaza and the Kamukunji Pressure Group, and the FCDO says crime rises around Christmas and New Year.

Most visitors stay in Westlands, Kilimani, Lavington, Gigiri or Karen. These areas have guarded hotels, malls and restaurants and feel very different from downtown, but walking alone after dark is still not a good idea anywhere.

Typical tricks and risks:

  • Snatch theft. Bags and phones are grabbed at bus and railway stations and from car windows in traffic, often by men on motorbikes.
  • Fake police. The FCDO warns of thieves posing as police or security guards to take passports, valuables or cars. Ask for identification.
  • Drink spiking. In bars and clubs, criminals spike drinks to rob or assault victims. Do not accept drinks from strangers.
  • Investment and gold scams. The US State Department says gold and commodity deals targeting foreigners are common and losses are rarely recovered.

If you are robbed, do not resist.

Terrorism and protests

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Kenya, mainly linked to Al Shabaab. Nairobi has been hit twice in the past 13 years: the Westgate mall siege in 2013 and the 2019 attack on the 14 Riverside hotel and office complex. Expect bag searches and car checks at malls and hotels; they are worth the delay.

Protests are the more frequent disruption. Demonstrations against taxes and police violence since 2024 have been met with live fire. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights counted 19 people killed and 531 injured on 25 June 2025 alone, and the anniversary was marked again in June 2026. Avoid the CBD on announced protest days and anniversaries.

Roads and getting around

The National Transport and Safety Authority recorded 4,458 road deaths in Kenya by 2 December 2025, already more than the 4,311 for all of 2024. Pedestrians were the largest group, with 1,685 deaths. In Nairobi that means walking along roads without pavements, crossing multi-lane highways like Thika Road and Mombasa Road, and dodging boda-bodas (motorbike taxis). The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says matatus, the minibuses, are often uninsured and are sometimes hijacked.

For visitors the answer is simple: use Uber, Bolt or a hotel driver, keep doors locked and windows up, and sit in the back. From the airport, the FCDO recommends the Mombasa Road or the Nairobi Expressway and warns of a higher carjacking risk on Airport South Road and Jogoo Road.

Health and climate

At about 1,700 metres, Nairobi has a mild climate. Air pollution is moderate: IQAir measured 14.4 µg/m³ of PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary in 2024, above the WHO guideline of 5 but far cleaner than Cairo. Private hospitals are the place to go for emergencies; the US State Department says facilities often want payment before treatment, so carry insurance details. Drink bottled or treated water, and see our Kenya page for safari and coast travel. Flash floods during the March to May long rains can cut roads and flood low-lying neighbourhoods along the Nairobi and Mathare rivers.

How we scored it

Night safety (35), traffic (40) and theft (40) are Nairobi's weakest factors. Natural hazards (75) and health and environment (60) are its strongest. Violent crime (55) reflects armed robbery, terrorism and protest deaths rather than a published city murder rate, which is why confidence is medium.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to walk around Nairobi?

In daytime in Westlands, Karen, Gigiri and inside malls, generally yes if you carry little and stay alert. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns against walking alone in isolated areas even in daylight and names the CBD, Eastleigh, Kibera and Mathare as higher-risk. After dark, take a car or ride app for any distance.

Is Uber safe in Nairobi?

Uber and Bolt are the normal way for visitors to get around and are much safer than walking at night. Check the plate and driver against the app, keep windows up and doors locked in traffic, and keep phones out of sight at junctions, where snatch thefts through open windows happen.

What is the safest way from Nairobi airport to the city?

Use the Mombasa Road or the Nairobi Expressway. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says carjacking risk is higher on the old airport road (Airport South Road) and Jogoo Road. A pre-booked hotel transfer or ride app is the simplest option.

Should I avoid protests in Nairobi?

Yes. Demonstrations are common and can turn deadly; the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights counted 19 people killed and 531 injured in the 25 June 2025 protests. Stay away from the CBD on announced protest days and anniversaries, and follow local news.

Is Nairobi National Park safe?

Game drives inside the park are safe with a licensed operator; you stay in the vehicle except at designated sites. The main risks are road accidents getting there and crime around the edges of the city, not the wildlife.
