Is São Paulo safe?

Mostly yes for a careful visitor, and safer than its reputation. São Paulo's state security department counted 530 homicide victims in the city in 2025, about 4.6 per 100,000 people. That is lower than in Rio de Janeiro, far below the national rate on our Brazil page, and closer to US big-city levels than to the rest of Latin America.

The catch is theft. The capital recorded about 250,000 thefts and 98,000 robberies in 2025, and phone snatching is constant. We score São Paulo 55, a little above Bogotá and below Mexico City: low murder, high everyday crime, deadly traffic.

How common is violent crime?

Homicides rose 6.4% in 2025, from 498 to 530 victims, after years of decline. Most of the killings happen in outlying districts, not in the areas where visitors stay. Robbery is the violent crime that matters to a visitor: at about 860 robberies per 100,000 people, a mugging at knifepoint or gunpoint is a real possibility, though robberies fell 14.6% in 2025 to the lowest level in the state's records. Vehicle and cargo robbery also reached record lows.

Two risks are specific to Brazil. The US State Department warns of express kidnappings, where criminals force victims to withdraw cash at ATMs or send money by Pix, the instant payment app. Both the US and UK governments warn that criminals use dating apps to find foreigners, then drug and rob them. If you use dating apps, meet in busy public places and watch your drink.

Where phones and bags get stolen

About one in five phone robberies and thefts in Brazil happens in the capital, according to the Brazilian Public Security Forum. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary lists the places where British visitors are most often robbed or pickpocketed:

  • Avenida Paulista, the main avenue, especially at crossings and outside metro exits.
  • The historic centre, around the Catedral da Sé and Praça da República.
  • Luz station, next to the Cracolândia drug scene.
  • Rua Augusta, north of Paulista, and its bars and clubs.
  • Pinheiros, including its nightlife streets.

Thieves grab phones from hands, café tables and car windows, often from a bicycle or motorbike, and the FCDO says the peak is between 4pm and 9pm. Use your phone in a shop doorway, not at the kerb. Leave your passport in the hotel safe and carry one card.

Nights out and getting around

The bars of Vila Madalena, the restaurants of the Jardins and Itaim Bibi, and the clubs of Pinheiros are busy until late and fine with normal care. The centre empties after office hours and is the part of the city to avoid at night. For any trip after dark, take Uber or 99 from door to door, check the plate and driver, and wait inside until the car arrives; the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary reports express kidnappings by drivers using fake ride-hailing accounts. The US government tells its staff not to use municipal buses because of robbery risk. The metro is a better choice by day.

Traffic is the quieter danger

Infosiga, the state's road safety database, recorded 1,034 road deaths in the city in 2025, the most since 2015 and about 9 per 100,000 people. Pedestrian deaths rose 10.8% to 409, and most of the rest were motorcyclists, many of them delivery riders weaving between lanes. Avenida Jacu-Pêssego in the east zone had more deaths than any other city road in the first 11 months of 2025. Cross only at lights, look both ways even on one-way streets, and listen for motorbikes filtering between cars.

Air, health and summer storms

São Paulo's air is better than its traffic suggests but still above the WHO guideline. IQAir reported that PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary rose in 2024, and smoke from wildfires pushed monthly levels across Brazil far higher between June and September. Private hospitals such as Albert Einstein and Sírio-Libanês are among the best in Latin America; bring insurance. Dengue rises in the hot, rainy months, so use repellent.

From November to March, heavy afternoon storms flood underpasses and riverside avenues within minutes, bring down trees and can leave districts without power. Do not drive or walk through floodwater, and allow extra time to reach Guarulhos airport in the rainy season.

How we scored it

Violent crime (65) is São Paulo's strongest factor thanks to a low murder rate, held back by frequent armed robbery. Theft (36) is the weakest, followed by night safety (45) and traffic (52).
