Is Armenia safe to visit?

Armenia

Armenia has low crime, and Yerevan, Lake Sevan, Dilijan and the monasteries are safe to visit. The catch is the closed border with Azerbaijan, where the UK and US warn against travel, a peace treaty that is agreed but not yet signed, reckless driving and a high earthquake risk.

Is Armenia safe to visit?

Yes. Crime is low, with 2.2 Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary people in 2023 (UNODC), and Yerevan, Lake Sevan, Dilijan, Garni and Geghard see few problems. Armenia ranked 51st of 163 on the 2026 Global Peace IndexAn annual ranking of 163 countries by how peaceful they are, based on conflict, crime, militarisation and political instability.More in the glossary, up sharply on the year as relations with Azerbaijan thawed. The catches are specific: the closed eastern border, where the US says do not travel; a peace treaty that is agreed but unsigned; reckless driving; and a high earthquake risk. We score Armenia 72, just below Georgia at 74.

The border with Azerbaijan

Armenia and Azerbaijan fought over Nagorno-Karabakh for more than three decades. In September 2023, Azerbaijan took the region in a one-day offensive, and more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians, almost the whole population, fled into Armenia. There has been no fighting on Armenian soil since.

In August 2025, the two leaders agreed the text of a peace agreement at the White House, along with a US-backed transit route across southern Armenia, the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity" (TRIPP), linking Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave. The treaty has not been signed. Azerbaijan wants Armenia first to remove the reference to Karabakh from the preamble of its constitution, which needs a referendum. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's party won the June 2026 election with 49.8% of the vote, so the process continues, but no referendum date is set.

The travel advice still reflects the old tension. The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary (Level 2) says do not travel to the border region with Azerbaijan for any reason, and limits its staff in Gegharkunik east of Vardenis and in Syunik east of Goris and south of Kapan. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against all travel within 5 km of the entire eastern border and on the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan in the north-east. Your travel insurance may not cover you there.

In practice, the main tourist sites lie outside these zones. The eastern shore of Lake Sevan, parts of Tavush and the far south need care. Plan routes with a local driver, stay on main roads and do not stop or take photos near military posts.

Roads and taxis

Armenia's police counted 283 road deaths in 2025, about 9 per 100,000 people, down from 378 in 2023. The WHO's modelled estimate for 2019 was much higher, at 20 per 100,000. Crashes keep rising even as deaths fall: police recorded 4,784 accidents in 2025, up from 4,314 in 2024, and a collision in Shirak province in April 2026 killed six people, two of them children. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary calls the standard of driving poor, with drivers who ignore traffic laws, and roads in bad condition, especially in winter.

Avoid driving outside towns after dark, when roads are unlit. Mountain roads to Tatev, Jermuk and Dilijan are steep and winding, and passes such as Vorotan can close with snow. Pedestrians should use underpasses in Yerevan.

Hailed taxis often overcharge, and the FCDO notes occasional reports of drivers harassing women travelling alone. Book through the GG app instead.

Crime and scams

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary calls crime levels low. Pickpocketing, bag-snatching, theft from cars and burglary happen occasionally. Take care at cash machines after dark and keep your passport in the hotel, carrying a copy. Excessive drinking in public is not tolerated, and British visitors have been arrested for drunken behaviour.

Same-sex activity is legal, but attitudes are conservative and LGBT+ visitors are usually discreet. Photographing military bases and equipment can get you detained.

Earthquakes and the outdoors

Armenia sits on an active fault zone. The earthquake of December 1988 in the Lori region killed between 25,000 and 50,000 people, according to the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary, and much of Gyumri and Spitak was destroyed. Many older Soviet-era buildings would struggle in a strong quake, so learn the drop, cover and hold drill.

Winters are cold, and mountain roads can close. Mount Aragats reaches 4,090 metres, high enough for altitude sickness; turn back if you get a severe headache or feel confused.

Health care

Disease risk is low. In Yerevan, public clinics handle minor problems and private hospitals are good but expensive. Outside the capital, care is basic, so carry insurance with evacuation cover. Call 911 for an ambulance and ask for an English speaker.

How we scored it

Violent crime (86) and petty crime (82) are the strongest factors. Road safety (60) is the weakest, with official counts well below the WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary, followed by natural hazards (62) for the earthquake risk and conflict (64) for the closed border and the unsigned treaty. The latest homicide figure is from 2023 and the peace process is still moving, so confidence is medium.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to travel to Tatev and southern Armenia?

Yes, Tatev monastery and Goris are visited by many tourists without trouble. The US bars its own staff from non-essential travel to Syunik east of Goris and south of Kapan, and the UK advises against all travel within 5 km of the Azerbaijan border. Stay on the main roads, travel by day and do not stop near border posts.

Can I cross from Armenia to Azerbaijan or Turkey by land?

No. The border with Azerbaijan is closed, and so is the land border with Turkey. To reach either country, fly, for example from Yerevan to Istanbul, or go through Georgia. Open land crossings are with Georgia to the north and Iran to the south.

Is Yerevan safe at night?

Yes, the centre is busy and safe late into the evening. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary's advice is to watch your bag in crowds, take care at ATMs after dark and use the GG taxi app rather than hailing cars. Do I need a visa for Armenia?

Many nationalities do not. British citizens can stay up to 180 days a year without a visa, and US and EU citizens have similar rules. Check the rules for your passport before you travel.
