Is Equatorial Guinea safe to visit?
Equatorial Guinea
Mostly, if your papers are in order. The US advisory is Level 2, for crime, poor health care and arbitrary enforcement of the law. Street crime in Malabo and Bata is the everyday risk; the more unusual ones are detention over paperwork or business disputes, roadblocks and the lack of emergency care.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Violent crime25% of score
62 out of 100, FairWHO's modelled estimate is 2.6 per 100,000 for 2021, with no national homicide data behind it. We score in the 3–8 band instead because the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary reports mugging, carjacking and armed robbery in outlying parts of Malabo and Bata after dark and assaults on taxi passengers; the US says police may lack resources to respond even to serious crime.
Conflict and terrorism20% of score
72 out of 100, GoodNo armed conflict and no recent terrorism. Global Peace IndexAn annual ranking of 163 countries by how peaceful they are, based on conflict, crime, militarisation and political instability.More in the glossary 2026 ranks the country 38th of 163, up 20 places. The US warns of arbitrary enforcement of laws leading to detention, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says security forces respond swiftly to street protests and foreigners in business disputes can be barred from leaving.
Road safety20% of score
64 out of 100, FairWHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 11.7 road deaths per 100,000 in 2021, against 27.2 in its older 2019 series. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says most main roads are now paved, but police and military roadblocks are common and often seek bribes, and night driving is unsafe.
Health risks15% of score
40 out of 100, WeakCDC recommends malaria tablets; dengue, schistosomiasis and Zika occur. A Marburg outbreak in 2023 killed 12 of 17 confirmed cases (WHO). The US says there are no adequate trauma or ambulance services and even minor problems may need evacuation.
Natural hazards10% of score
74 out of 100, GoodLow exposure. The main hazard is heavy tropical rain, which can flood roads, especially in rural parts of the mainland. Earthquake and cyclone risk is low.
Petty crime and scams10% of score
52 out of 100, WeakThe US says petty crime is common throughout the country. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns of theft and mugging around Malabo and Bata, robberies of taxi passengers at night, and says only a few big hotels take credit cards, so visitors carry cash.
Is Equatorial Guinea safe to visit?
Mostly, and in some ways more than its neighbours. There is no armed conflict, no recent terrorism and no part of the country the UK advises against visiting. The 2026 Global Peace IndexAn annual ranking of 163 countries by how peaceful they are, based on conflict, crime, militarisation and political instability.More in the glossary ranks it 38th of 163, the second best in sub-Saharan Africa. The catch is the state itself: the US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary, Level 2 since 7 October 2025, lists arbitrary enforcement of the law alongside crime and health, and very little works in an emergency. We score Equatorial Guinea 61, close to Gabon and well ahead of Cameroon (49).
Hard data are scarce. There is no UNODC homicide figure, only a WHO model that puts it at 2.6 per 100,000 for 2021, and WHO's 2021 road estimate is less than half its 2019 one, so confidence is low.
The country comes in two main parts: Bioko island, with the capital Malabo, and the mainland region of Río Muni, with Bata. The advice below applies to both.
Police, papers and detention
This is the risk that surprises visitors. The US warns of harassment and detention through arbitrary enforcement of local laws, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary's advice is full of specific traps.
Your passport comes first. You need a visa, available online in about 72 hours, and the border officer must issue it and stamp your passport on arrival; the FCDO says travellers without a proper stamp have been delayed or threatened with detention. Carry your passport or residence permit, or copies, at all times. Security checks have increased, and failing to show ID can lead to arrest.
Police and military roadblocks are common. You may have to explain why you are in the area, and officers regularly ask for bribes. The FCDO suggests staying calm and asking for a written ticket that you can pay at a local court.
Business disputes carry a risk of their own. The authorities can stop anyone involved in a commercial dispute from leaving the country, and the FCDO says expatriate staff of foreign companies have been confined to Equatorial Guinea for long periods, with possible prison terms of months or years. Do not photograph government or military buildings or airports, and stay away from political gatherings, which security forces break up quickly.
Crime in Malabo and Bata
Ordinary crime is moderate. The US says petty crime is common nationwide and that police may not have the resources to respond even to serious crimes. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary lists theft, mugging, carjacking and armed robbery, mostly in outlying parts of Malabo and Bata after dark. Taxi passengers have been robbed and violently assaulted at night, so book taxis through your hotel or an app and never share one with strangers.
Cash matters here. Only a few big hotels, including the Hilton and Sofitel, take credit cards, and ATMs are scarce, so you will carry more cash than usual. Keep it split and out of sight.
Roads and flights
WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 11.7 road deaths per 100,000 people in 2021, which we use for every country; its older 2019 series gave 27.2. Most main roads on Bioko and in Río Muni are now paved, but public transport on the mainland is very limited and driving after dark is best avoided. Drink-driving is a serious offence.
Every known airline from Equatorial Guinea is on the UK EU Air Safety ListThe European Commission's list of airlines banned or restricted from flying in EU airspace because they do not meet international safety standards.More in the glossary, banned from UK airspace because it does not meet international safety standards. Pirates have attacked ships in the Gulf of Guinea, so take care on boats in coastal waters.
Health care and disease
CDC recommends malaria tablets, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says you must show a yellow fever certificate to enter. Dengue, Zika and schistosomiasis are present, so do not swim in fresh water. In 2023 a Marburg virus outbreak caused 17 confirmed and 23 probable cases; 12 of the confirmed patients and all of the probable ones died before WHO declared it over on 8 June 2023.
Medical care is the weakest point. The US says there are no adequate trauma or ambulance services, and even minor problems may need evacuation at your cost. Pharmacies in Malabo and Bata stock only basic medicines, so bring enough for the whole trip. The ambulance number is 3101, but the FCDO calls emergency response unreliable, so carry insurance that covers evacuation.
How we scored it
Health (40) is the weakest factor, followed by petty crime (52). Natural hazards (74) and conflict (72) score highest, though arbitrary detention keeps conflict below peaceful countries elsewhere. Road safety (64) uses WHO's 2021 estimate of 11.7 per 100,000. Violent crime (62) is a judgement from advisory descriptions; WHO's modelled Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary of 2.6 would put it higher, but there is no recorded figure to confirm it. The weighted average is 61; our cap of conflict plus 35 (107) does not bind.

The UK EU Air Safety ListThe European Commission's list of airlines banned or restricted from flying in EU airspace because they do not meet international safety standards.More in the glossary bans all known airlines from Equatorial Guinea from flying to or within the UK because they do not meet international safety standards.
