Is Luxembourg safe to visit?
Luxembourg
Luxembourg is one of the safest countries in Europe for visitors. Murders are rare enough that one case moves the rate, and there is no terrorism record. The real risks are pickpockets around the main station and on buses, and the roads, where deaths rose from 18 in 2024 to 29 in 2025.

Is Luxembourg safe to visit?
Yes. Luxembourg is among the safest countries in Europe, and almost all the risk a visitor faces is ordinary: a pickpocket near the station, a slip on an icy pavement, a crash on a busy commuter road. We score it 91, ahead of neighbouring Belgium (84) and Germany (88) and close to Switzerland (93).
The US State Department rates it Level 1, its lowest level, and mentions only purse snatching and pickpocketing. The UK FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against no part of the country.
How rare is violent crime in Luxembourg?
Very rare, so rare that single cases distort the statistics. With about 687,000 residents, Eurostat counted between 2 and 9 intentional homicides a year from 2015 to 2024. That gives a rate that swings from 0.30 per 100,000 (2024) to 1.39 (2022) depending on one or two cases. The ten-year average, 0.63 per 100,000, is the better guide, and it is among the lowest in the EU.
Robbery is less rare than murder: Eurostat recorded about 87 robberies per 100,000 people in 2023, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary notes that violent robberies have happened. Visitors who stick to busy, lit streets after dark are unlikely to meet any of it.
Pickpockets and the Gare district
Theft is Luxembourg's real crime problem, and it has grown. Eurostat recorded 2,712 thefts per 100,000 people in 2024, against 1,617 in 2019. Part of that is arithmetic: more than 200,000 people commute in from France, Belgium and Germany every working day, and crimes against them count against a small resident population. But the rise is real, and residents notice it.
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary names three places to watch: buses, the main train station (Gare de Luxembourg) and hotel lobbies in the Findel airport area. The station quarter also has a visible street drug scene. That is unpleasant rather than dangerous for visitors, but it is the part of the city where you should keep the closest eye on your bag.
- Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket on buses and trams.
- Do not leave luggage unattended in hotel lobbies near the airport.
- Do not keep your passport, cards and cash in the same place.
- Report a theft in person at a police station within 24 hours to get a report for insurance.
The FCDO also warns that some taxis charge inflated prices. Use marked ranks, check the price list before you get in, and expect evening and Sunday surcharges.
Are Luxembourg's roads safe?
Safe, but not as safe as Norway, Sweden or Switzerland. WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 3.9 road deaths per 100,000 people in 2021. STATEC counted 29 in 2025, up from 18 in 2024, the lowest figure on record. The four-year average of about 27 deaths is roughly 4.1 per 100,000 people. Behind the rise: pedestrian deaths went from 3 to 8, car occupant deaths from 6 to 12, and 9 motorcyclists died. Serious injuries rose to 335.
The numbers are small, so a single bad crash moves the rate a lot. The more useful picture for a driver is the traffic itself. Motorways into the capital carry heavy commuter flows from the three neighbouring countries every weekday morning and evening, and the Ardennes roads in the north are narrow and winding, with ice in winter.
Rules are strictly enforced, and you can be fined on the spot for minor offences. The alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and 0.2 g/l for drivers with less than two years' experience. Winter or all-season tyres with the M+S or alpine symbol are required in snow, ice or frost. Carry your licence, registration and insurance papers in the car; borders are open and you can cross into another country without noticing.
Health and natural hazards
Health risks are low. Hospitals and doctors are of a high EU standard, tap water is safe, and CDC lists only routine vaccines plus hepatitis A and B. In an emergency, dial 112 and ask for SAMU if you need a doctor sent with the ambulance. EU visitors need an EHIC, UK visitors a GHIC; neither replaces travel insurance.
Luxembourg has no earthquakes, volcanoes or hurricanes. The main natural hazard is river flooding along the Sûre, Alzette and their tributaries after prolonged heavy rain, as in July 2021. Hikers in the Müllerthal, the sandstone gorges near Echternach, should expect wet, slippery rock and narrow passages; good shoes matter more than anything else there. Check MeteoLux for weather warnings.
How to stay safe in Luxembourg
- Watch your bags at Gare de Luxembourg, on buses and in airport-area hotel lobbies.
- At night, walk main streets around the station rather than side streets.
- Take taxis from marked ranks and check the tariff first.
- In winter, fit proper tyres and allow for ice on Ardennes roads.
- Call 112 for ambulance and fire, 113 for police.
How we scored it
Violent crime (95) and conflict (93) are the strongest factors: a ten-year homicide average of 0.63 per 100,000 and no terrorism record. Health (93) and natural hazards (90) are also strong. Road safety (90) sits at the bottom of the top band: WHO's 2021 estimate is 3.9 per 100,000, and deaths rose in 2025, and petty crime (80) is the weakest factor because recorded theft has risen by two-thirds since 2019 and concentrates around the main station.
Questions people ask
Is the area around Luxembourg's main train station safe?
It is safe to pass through, but the Gare district is where Luxembourg's visible street drug trade and much of its petty theft concentrate. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary names Gare de Luxembourg as a pickpocketing spot. Keep your phone and wallet out of reach, and at night walk the main streets rather than side streets.
Is Luxembourg City safe at night?
Yes, for most visitors. Violent crime is rare and the old town, Grund and Clausen are busy on weekend evenings. Watch your drink and belongings in bars, and use an official taxi from a marked rank or a bus rather than a car offered on the street.
Is it safe to drive in Luxembourg?
Yes. Roads are good and rules are strictly enforced, but deaths rose to 29 in 2025. The alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, or 0.2 g/l for drivers with less than two years' experience. Winter or all-season tyres are required in snow and ice, and the motorways carry heavy commuter traffic from France, Belgium and Germany at rush hour.
Is Luxembourg safe for solo female travellers?
Yes. Luxembourg has very little violent crime and public transport runs late in the capital. Normal city precautions apply. Stay on lit main streets around Gare at night and keep an eye on your drink in bars.
Can you drink the tap water in Luxembourg?
Yes, tap water is safe to drink everywhere in Luxembourg. It is often hard (high in lime), so some visitors prefer the taste of bottled water.
