Is North Macedonia safe to visit?

North Macedonia

North Macedonia is one of the calmer countries in the Balkans, rated Level 1 by the US, with about 1.1 homicides per 100,000 people. The weak spots are fire safety in venues after the Kočani nightclub fire killed 63 people in 2025, heavy winter air pollution in Skopje, and roads where 132 people died in 2025.

Is North Macedonia safe to visit?

Yes. North Macedonia is one of the quieter places in the Balkans. The US State Department rates it Level 1, "exercise normal precautions", and Eurostat counted 20 homicide victims in 2024, 1.1 per 100,000 people. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says attacks on foreign nationals are extremely rare. We score it 79, a little above Serbia (78) and Albania (73).

The risks are less obvious than crime. The Kočani nightclub fire of March 2025 exposed weak fire safety checks. Skopje has some of the worst winter air in Europe. And the roads are still more dangerous than in most of the EU.

What the Kočani fire says about venue safety

In the early hours of 16 March 2025, a fire swept through the Puls nightclub in Kočani, a town in the east of the country, during a concert. It killed 63 people and injured more than 200, according to European Western Balkans. The investigation found the club was operating without a permit and without proper fire protection. Dozens of people were detained the next day.

More than 30 people and three companies went on trial in Skopje in November 2025, including the owners, a former minister, a mayor, officials and police officers. All deny the charges. The case showed that a venue could keep operating without a permit or basic fire protection.

For a visitor, the lesson applies to clubs, bars and concert halls anywhere in the region. Check where the exits are when you walk in. Leave if a venue is packed far beyond its size, if the only way out is the way you came in, or if anyone sets off pyrotechnics indoors.

How bad is the air in Skopje?

Bad in winter. Fine particle pollution (PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary) averaged 21.8 µg/m³ across the country in 2023 (World Bank), four times WHO's guideline of 5. Skopje sits in a valley, and on cold, windless days smoke from wood and coal stoves and traffic gets trapped. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary lists air pollution as a health risk.

If you have asthma, heart or lung disease, or travel with small children, check the city's air quality index each day from November to February and keep outdoor exercise for cleaner days. Summer air is much better, and Ohrid and Mavrovo are usually clear.

Roads and driving

The Transport Community counted 132 road deaths in 2025 (provisional), 72 per million people, no better than in 2019 and well above the EU average of 43. The motorway corridor from the Serbian border through Skopje to Greece is good. Two-lane roads to Ohrid, Mavrovo and the east are slower, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says driving standards vary widely and accidents are common.

Headlights must be on in daytime, phones must be hands-free, and the drink-drive limit (50 mg per 100 ml) is lower than in England. In winter, fog in the Skopje basin and snow on mountain passes make night driving riskier. With your own car you also need the 1968 international driving permit; rental cars are exempt.

Petty crime and money

Petty theft is the crime you are most likely to meet, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says it seems to target foreigners. Gangs of children pickpocket and bags get snatched late at night in Skopje's main shopping and nightlife areas. Keep your phone in a front pocket and your passport in the hotel. Change money only at banks or official exchange offices, never with street dealers.

Celebratory gunfire at weddings and holidays still happens, and the FCDO notes occasional shootings in Skopje that are not aimed at foreigners. Organised crime groups are active near the Kosovo border in the north.

Health and hazards

UK visitors get free emergency treatment under a reciprocal agreement, but insurance is still needed. CDC recommends hepatitis A and B vaccines, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary lists West Nile virus. Earthquakes occur occasionally. Wildfires are possible from April to October, when the government often closes forests to visitors; fines are severe.

How to stay safe in North Macedonia

  • Note the exits in clubs and concert venues, and leave overcrowded ones.
  • Check Skopje's air quality in winter if you have breathing or heart problems.
  • Drive in daylight on mountain roads and keep headlights on.
  • Use official exchange offices and keep valuables close at night.
  • Call 112 in an emergency, 192 for police, 194 for an ambulance.

How we scored it

Violent crime (88) is the strongest factor, with about one homicide per 100,000 people. Health (70) is the weakest, reflecting winter air pollution and the fire safety failures shown in Kočani. Road safety (77) sits in the 4–8 per 100,000 band. Confidence is medium because the 2025 road numbers are provisional.
