Is Slovakia safe to visit?
Slovakia
Slovakia is a safe country to visit, with about 1.1 homicides per 100,000 people and a Level 1 US advisory. The 2024 shooting of the prime minister and large protests in 2025 show real political tension, but visitors are not targets. In the mountains, fast weather changes and brown bears are the risks to plan for.

Yes. We score it 85, just below Czechia and Hungary. Two things set it apart from its neighbours: a tense political climate, marked by the 2024 shooting of the prime minister, and mountains where the real risks are weather, terrain and brown bears.
Political tension and the 2024 shooting
On 15 May 2024, Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot at close range as he left a government meeting in central Slovakia. He survived and recovered. In October 2025 the Specialised Criminal Court in Banská Bystrica convicted the gunman of a terror attack and sentenced him to 21 years, Al Jazeera reported; his lawyer said he would most likely appeal. It was the second politically motivated shooting in two years. In October 2022 an attack on an LGBT+ bar in Bratislava killed two people and was classed as terrorism, the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary notes.
The government's moves against non-profits, cultural institutions and some media have drawn mass protests, including large rallies in 2025. The FCDO says recent demonstrations have generally been peaceful but can disrupt transport and public squares. Slovakia also borders Ukraine, and crossings there can face delays or restrictions at short notice.
For a visitor, none of this changes daily life much. Slovakia fell 3 places to 29th of 163 on the 2026 Global Peace IndexAn annual ranking of 163 countries by how peaceful they are, based on conflict, crime, militarisation and political instability.More in the glossary, partly because of higher weapons imports, and the US still rates it Level 1. Avoid demonstrations and you are very unlikely to be affected.
Bratislava: stag parties and small scams
Bratislava has become a popular stag-party destination, and that is where most trouble starts. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns of drink spiking, theft and extortionate drink prices in clubs around the Old Town pedestrian zone, and of pickpockets at the Christmas markets and in bars. Rowdy behaviour between 10pm and 6am draws police attention, and drinking in the Old Town streets brings a 33-euro fine. You must carry your passport, and failing to show ID when asked can cost up to 1,600 euros.
On the road, the FCDO describes a scam aimed at foreign cars: thieves puncture a tyre at a petrol station, then follow and offer help, or fake a breakdown to make you stop. At night, stop only at well-lit service areas, lock the car and keep luggage out of sight.
Mountains, weather and bears
The High Tatras are real alpine mountains, the highest in the Carpathians. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says the weather changes fast, and that rescues by the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) can cost you up to 1,000 euros, with fines of up to 3,320 euros for ignoring its rules. Some high trails close seasonally, so check trail status and the forecast with HZS before setting out, start early to avoid afternoon storms, and get insurance that covers mountain rescue.
Brown bears are the other mountain risk. The government estimates about 1,300 in Slovakia, mostly in the centre and north. After a 59-year-old man was killed near Detva in March 2025, it declared an emergency in 55 districts and approved a cull of up to 350 bears (TASR). The FCDO advises staying on marked trails, making noise in thick forest, keeping dogs on a lead and never approaching or feeding a bear.
Lower down, the FCDO lists heatwaves, storms and flash floods. Jumping into unknown lakes and rivers has caused paralysis and deaths.
Roads and health
ETSC counted 227 road deaths in 2025, down 13% to 42 per million people, just under the EU average of 43 and close to Czechia. Many main roads have one lane each way, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that oncoming drivers overtake into your lane. The alcohol limit is zero, motorways need a vignette, and in winter your car must be equipped for severe conditions.
Healthcare in Bratislava and Košice is good. Call 112, or 155 for an ambulance. The FCDO flags a higher risk of tick bites from April to October; CDC recommends the tick-borne encephalitis vaccine for travellers who spend a lot of time outdoors, and hepatitis A vaccine for anyone unvaccinated.
How we scored it
Violent crime (92) is Slovakia's strongest factor. Health (85), roads (84) and conflict (84) are solid; conflict loses points for two politically motivated attacks in four years and frequent protests. Natural hazards (80) reflects the Tatras, flash floods and bears, and petty crime (76) the Bratislava nightlife and roadside scams.
