Is Tonga safe to visit?

Tonga

Tonga is a quiet, conservative kingdom where serious crime is rare and the US advises normal precautions. The real risks are natural and practical; the January 2022 eruption and tsunami, cyclones, unlit roads with a volatile road-death record, repeated dengue outbreaks and hospitals that send most serious cases abroad.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Violent crime25% of score

    78 out of 100, Good

UNODC rates swing from 0.9 to 9.5 per 100,000 because Tonga has about 100,000 people and one killing moves the rate by one point; the five reported years from 2010 to 2019 average 2.8. WHO's modelled estimate for 2021 is 3.3, in the 3–8 band. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary calls serious crime low.

  • Conflict and terrorism20% of score

    88 out of 100, Excellent

The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary is Level 1 and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary advises against no area. There is no recent terrorism. Riots in Nuku'alofa in November 2006 destroyed much of the business district, but politics has been peaceful since the 2010 constitutional and electoral reforms.

  • Road safety20% of score

    73 out of 100, Good

WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 8.5 road deaths per 100,000 in 2021, near the low end of the 8–15 band. The older World Bank series swings from 6.9 (2015) to 33.0 (2019), because with about 100,000 people one death moves the rate by a point.

  • Health risks15% of score

    56 out of 100, Fair

There is no malaria, but dengue keeps returning; an outbreak in 2025 caused 907 cases and another was declared on 16 April 2026 (SPC and WHO via ReliefWeb). The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says facilities are basic and most non-basic problems need medical evacuation; there is no hyperbaric chamber.

  • Natural hazards10% of score

    40 out of 100, Weak

The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai eruption on 15 January 2022 sent a tsunami up to about 22 m high on Tofua, killed four people in Tonga and caused US$118 million of damage (NOAA). Cyclones strike from November to May and earthquakes are frequent.

  • Petty crime and scams10% of score

    78 out of 100, Good

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says petty theft is fairly common, mainly unattended bags and items in unlocked rooms, and advises well-lit areas after dark. Robbery and scams aimed at tourists are not reported by the US or UK.

Is Tonga safe to visit?

Yes, for most visitors. The US rates Tonga at Level 1, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary calls serious crime low. What can hurt you here is the ground, the sea and the roads: Tonga sits above one of the most active volcanic arcs on Earth, the road-death figures are erratic, and serious illness means a flight to New Zealand. We score Tonga 72, just below Samoa (75) and below Fiji (78), mainly because of natural hazards.

Treat every rate on this page with caution. Tonga has about 100,000 people, so a single death changes a per-100,000 figure by a full point. UNODC Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary jump from 0.9 to 9.5 between neighbouring years; the five years reported between 2010 and 2019 average 2.8, and WHO's modelled estimate for 2021 is 3.3. That is why confidence is low.

Volcanoes, tsunamis and cyclones

At 03:47 UTC on 15 January 2022 (late afternoon in Tonga), the submarine volcano Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai erupted with a force rated VEI 5. NOAA records a tsunami that reached about 22 m on Tofua, levelled beach resorts on north-west Tongatapu and destroyed every home on Mango Island. Four people died in Tonga, damage reached US$118 million, and the eruption damaged the seabed fibre-optic cable that carries Tonga's internet.

The lesson for visitors is simple. If you feel a strong or long earthquake, or hear a loud roar from the sea, move inland and uphill at once; on low islands such as those in Ha'apai, go to the highest building or ground you can reach. Note where tsunami routes lead from your accommodation on arrival.

Cyclone season runs from November to May, though the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary notes storms can come at any time. Severe Cyclone Gita hit Tongatapu on the night of 12 February 2018. When a warning is issued, boats and flights between island groups stop, so leave slack in your plans.

The roads are the everyday risk

Tonga's road statistics are unusually unstable. WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 8.5 road deaths per 100,000 people in 2021, the figure we score on, but the older World Bank series climbs from 6.9 in 2015 to 33.0 in 2019. With so few people, a handful of crashes moves the rate a lot.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says roads are generally good but narrow and potholed inland. Limits are low, seatbelts are compulsory and phone use at the wheel is illegal. Avoid driving at night: roads are poorly lit, and pigs, dogs and pedestrians use them as much as cars do.

Dengue and medical care

There is no malaria, but dengue has become a regular visitor. Tonga declared an outbreak on 19 February 2025 that ran until 20 August 2025 and caused 907 cases, most on Tongatapu and Vava'u. Another was declared on 16 April 2026 across Tongatapu, Ha'apai and 'Eua and had been declared over by early August. Use repellent during the day and see a doctor about any fever. Zika is also present.

Health care is basic. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says drugs and modern equipment are in short supply and most non-basic problems need evacuation. There is no hyperbaric chamber, which matters if you dive or swim with whales. Bring prescriptions for the whole trip and insurance that covers air ambulance.

Crime, customs and the sea

Theft is the crime you are most likely to meet: bags left on the beach, phones in unlocked fales. Use the hotel safe and lock doors. Violent crime against visitors is rare.

Tonga is deeply religious. Sunday is strictly observed, so shops close and swimming or loud recreation in villages can offend, though island resorts are exempt. Drinking in public outside bars is illegal and the drinking age is 21. Men who have sex with men face a law the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says is occasionally enforced.

In the water, take local advice: tides create strong currents in lagoons, waves break onto reefs, and there have been fatal accidents on popular beaches.

How we scored it

Conflict (88) is the strongest factor, followed by violent crime and petty crime (78 each). Natural hazards (40) are the weakest after the 2022 eruption and tsunami, then health (56) for dengue and evacuation-only care. Road safety (73) uses WHO's 2021 estimate of 8.5 deaths per 100,000, though the older series was far more erratic.
