Is OKX Wallet safe?
OKX Wallet
OKX Wallet is the self-custody wallet of the OKX group, separate from the exchange account. Its drainer and address-poisoning defences are among the better ones, but the app and extension are closed source, and its built-in DEX was exploited in 2023 and paused in 2025 amid EU laundering scrutiny, which OKX disputed.

How the score breaks down
The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules
Security record30% of score
68 out of 100, FairIn December 2023 a deprecated OKX DEX contract was drained after a suspected admin-key leak, about $2.7 million according to PeckShield; OKX promised to reimburse users but published no full post-mortem we could find. No loss traced to the wallet's key storage.

Is OKX Wallet safe?
As a Self-custodyHolding crypto in a wallet where you alone control the private keys, rather than leaving it with an exchange or another company.More in the glossary wallet, reasonably so, with two caveats. OKX Wallet keeps your keys on your device, and it is better than most Hot walletA crypto wallet connected to the internet, such as an app or an exchange's online wallet. It is convenient, but more exposed to hacking.More in the glossary at catching DrainerA malicious website or script that tricks a crypto user into signing a transaction or approval that lets attackers empty the wallet.More in the glossary, look-alike addresses and malicious approvals before you sign. But you cannot inspect its code, and the DEX built into it has had a rough record: a drained contract in 2023 and a pause in 2025 after the Bybit hack money passed through it. We score it 71/100, a B.

Seed phrase or keyless: how OKX Wallet holds your keys
New users get a standard Seed phraseA list of 12 to 24 words that can restore a crypto wallet and all its funds. Anyone who has it controls the wallet.More in the glossary wallet. The phrase sits on your phone or in the browser extension, and you can import it into any other wallet, so leaving OKX is easy.
Older users may have a keyless wallet, which OKX built on MPC walletA crypto wallet that splits the private key into several shares held in different places, so no single device or company holds the whole key.More in the glossary (MPC). It splits the key into 3 shares: one on OKX's server, one on your device and one encrypted in your iCloud or Google Drive. Any 2 can sign, so OKX alone cannot move funds, and neither can someone who steals only your phone. If OKX disappears, its "Emergency escape" rebuilds the full key from your device and cloud shares and turns it into a normal wallet. The MPC library is open source on GitHub.
OKX has been winding this model down. Keyless wallets stopped working in the extension on 7 April 2025 and new ones could not be created after 23 May 2025. Existing ones still run in the app. If you have one, check that the cloud backup exists, because without it a lost phone leaves only OKX's share.
Either way your keys live on an internet-connected device, which our rubric caps at 84. Key management scores 76, level with Trust Wallet.
The 2023 DEX exploit and the 2025 pause
On 12 December 2023 an attacker upgraded a deprecated OKX DEX proxy contract and used the token approvals users had given it to drain funds. SlowMist said the proxy admin's private key may have leaked; PeckShield and Arkham put losses at about $2.7 million. OKX confirmed the compromise and said it would reimburse affected users. We found no full post-mortem or final repayment figure, which keeps the security record at 68.
The second episode cost users nothing directly but says something about the product. After the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025, which investigators attributed to North Korea's Lazarus Group, Bybit's CEO said about $100 million had moved through OKX's Web3 proxy. Bloomberg reported EU scrutiny of OKX's Web3 services. On 17 March 2025 OKX paused its DEX aggregator, saying it had "detected a coordinated effort by Lazarus group to misuse our defi services", that it acted after consulting regulators and that it was facing "targeted media attacks". Wallets stayed available, though new wallet creation was paused in some markets.
How good is OKX Wallet at stopping drainers?
This is its best factor. Since July 2024 the wallet intercepts approvals that hand your tokens to an ordinary address rather than a contract, ownership changes on chains such as TRON and Solana (a common trick that silently takes over an account), and transfers to addresses that copy the start and end of one you used recently, the address-poisoning attack. It simulates transactions to show balance changes, flags risky existing approvals for you to revoke and screens known malicious dApps and tokens. OKX itself says simulation is not proof of safety. Scam protection scores 84, close to MetaMask at 85.
Can you check the code?
Partly. The app and browser extension are closed source. OKX publishes its multi-chain signing SDKs under MIT, its MPC walletA crypto wallet that splits the private key into several shares held in different places, so no single device or company holds the whole key.More in the glossary threshold-signature library under Apache-2.0, and BlockSec audit reports for its smart-wallet and recovery contracts, published in January 2026. Its HackerOne programme lists the Chrome, Edge and Safari extensions as in scope for critical bugs, but disclosure is private. Transparency scores 58.

- Treat an interception warning as a stop sign, especially for ownership or permission changes.
- Revoke old approvals from the wallet's approval page every few months.
- Download only from okx.com or official store listings; fake OKX Wallet extensions are common.
How we scored it
Scam protection (84) and key management (76) are the strongest factors: real interception of the DrainerA malicious website or script that tricks a crypto user into signing a transaction or approval that lets attackers empty the wallet.More in the glossary tricks that cost users most, and a standard seed with a documented MPC walletA crypto wallet that splits the private key into several shares held in different places, so no single device or company holds the whole key.More in the glossary exit. Transparency (58) and security record (68) pull it down, because the code you run is closed and the built-in DEX was exploited in 2023. Company record (70) reflects the 2025 laundering episode, not the exchange's fines.
Questions people ask
Is OKX Wallet the same as my OKX exchange account?
No. Your OKX exchange account is custodial, so OKX holds the coins and can freeze them. OKX Wallet is Self-custodyHolding crypto in a wallet where you alone control the private keys, rather than leaving it with an exchange or another company.More in the glossary, even when you open it inside the same app, and OKX cannot move what is in it. Exchange protections such as Proof of reservesA report in which a crypto exchange shows that it holds enough coins to cover all customer balances, ideally checked by an outside firm.More in the glossary do not cover the wallet, and exchange risks do not reach it.
Can I still create an OKX keyless (MPC) wallet?
No. OKX stopped keyless wallets in the browser extension on 7 April 2025 and removed the option to create new ones on 23 May 2025. Existing keyless wallets still work in the app, but OKX says a wallet you exit cannot be recreated, so plan any change carefully.
What happens to my keyless wallet if OKX shuts down?
OKX documents an "Emergency escape" that combines the share on your phone with the encrypted share in your iCloud or Google Drive to rebuild the full private key, without OKX's server. That only works if your cloud backup exists, so check in the app that it is there.
Why did OKX pause its DEX aggregator in 2025?
Bybit's CEO said about $100 million from the February 2025 Bybit hack had passed through OKX's Web3 proxy, and Bloomberg reported EU scrutiny. On 17 March 2025 OKX paused the aggregator, saying it had detected a coordinated effort by the Lazarus group to misuse its DeFi services and would add upgrades. Wallets kept working.
Is OKX Wallet open source?
Not the app or extension. OKX publishes its signing SDKs and its MPC walletA crypto wallet that splits the private key into several shares held in different places, so no single device or company holds the whole key.More in the glossary library on GitHub and has had its smart-wallet contracts audited, but you cannot check that the wallet you install matches public code.
