Is Berlin safe?

Berlin

Berlin is a safe city for visitors with low lethal violence and a calm traffic record. The risks are pickpockets on the U-Bahn and at Alexanderplatz, and a handful of drug-dealing hot spots in Kreuzberg and Neukölln that are best avoided late at night.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Violent crime25% of score

    86 out of 100, Excellent

Police counted 165 murder and manslaughter cases in 2025 including attempts, 79 of them from one suspected series of killings by a palliative doctor. Completed killings ran at 29 to 53 a year from 2016 to 2024, about 1 to 1.4 per 100,000. • Theft and scams20% of score

    72 out of 100, Good

Police recorded 13,621 pickpocketings in 2025, down 14.6%, and 6,192 thefts from the person on buses and trains (Polizei Berlin PKS 2025). Bike theft is far more common, with 22,630 cases.

  • Walking at night15% of score

    71 out of 100, Good

In the EU's 2023 city survey 60% of Berliners felt safe walking alone at night in the city, though 77% did in their own area. The U-Bahn runs all night at weekends. Police list seven crime-burdened places, including Alexanderplatz (6,535 offences in 2024), Görlitzer Park and Kottbusser Tor, where drug dealing and robberies cluster.

  • Traffic safety15% of score

    90 out of 100, Excellent

37 people died on Berlin's roads in 2025 according to police figures reported by the Berliner Zeitung, about 1 per 100,000, down from 55 in 2024. Nearly 60% of the dead were over 65.

  • Health and environment15% of score

    86 out of 100, Excellent

Fine particle levels meet the EU limit but stay above the WHO guideline of 5 µg/m³, highest on main roads. Tap water is safe and hospitals, including the Charité, are excellent.

  • Natural hazards10% of score

    92 out of 100, Excellent

No earthquake or coastal risk. Summer heatwaves, autumn storms that bring down trees and short cloudbursts that flood underpasses are the main hazards.

Is Berlin safe?

Yes. Berlin is a big, scruffy, tolerant city with very little lethal violence and a lot of petty theft. Police recorded 502,743 crimes in 2025, 6.7% fewer than a year earlier and, leaving aside the lockdown year 2021, the lowest total in more than a decade. Completed killings ran at between 29 and 53 a year from 2016 to 2024 in a city of about 3.7 million, or roughly 1 to 1.4 per 100,000.

The 2025 murder figure looks alarming at first: 165 cases, up 41%. But German police count attempts as well as completed killings, and 79 of the cases belong to a single investigation into a palliative doctor suspected of killing seriously ill patients. Street violence against visitors is uncommon.

We score Berlin 82, level with Prague and Amsterdam, just above London and ahead of Paris.

Pickpockets and the U-Bahn

Police recorded 13,621 pickpocketings in 2025, down 14.6%, and 6,192 thefts from the person on buses, the U-Bahn and the S-Bahn. That is roughly 37 a day across the city, far fewer than in Barcelona, but it is concentrated where visitors go.

The places to keep a hand on your bag:

  • Alexanderplatz station and square. The busiest interchange and the top entry on the police list of crime-burdened places.
  • Friedrichstraße, Zoologischer Garten and the Hauptbahnhof. Crowded platforms and escalators.
  • The U2 and U8 lines through Mitte, Kreuzberg and Neukölln, and the S-Bahn ring trains at rush hour.
  • The Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the East Side Gallery, where people stop for photos.
  • Christmas markets, where crowds are dense and attention is elsewhere.

Bike theft is the bigger local crime, with 22,630 cases in 2025. If you rent a bike, lock the frame to something solid, not just the wheel. Scams are minor: the cup-and-ball game near tourist sights and fake petitions for "deaf charities" that cover a hand reaching for your phone.

The places police watch

Berlin police designate seven "crime-burdened places" where they can stop and search people without suspicion. They are Alexanderplatz, Görlitzer Park and the Wrangelkiez, Kottbusser Tor, Hermannplatz, Hermannstraße and Neukölln station, Warschauer Brücke and Rigaer Straße. Alexanderplatz recorded 6,535 offences in 2024 and Görlitzer Park 5,192, according to the Senate's answer to a parliamentary question.

Most of this is drug dealing, theft and fights among people who know each other. The practical rule is simple. Use Kottbusser Tor and Warschauer Straße stations, which you will pass on any night out in Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain, but do not hang around under the elevated tracks late at night, and do not cut through Görlitzer Park after dark. The Senate began closing the park at night in March 2026, and the move has been fought in court since. Do not buy drugs in parks: dealers there sell adulterated product, and robberies of buyers are common.

Knife attacks are a political issue in Berlin. Police recorded 3,599 in 2025, almost half of them threats rather than injuries. Weapons and knives have been banned on all public transport since July 2025, and knife attacks fell by 25% to 45% in three knife-ban zones.

Going out at night

Berlin's clubs open late and close later, and the city stays busy at hours when most capitals are asleep. The U-Bahn runs all night on Friday and Saturday nights, and night buses (N lines) and some trams cover the rest of the week. Licensed taxis, Uber, Bolt and FreeNow all operate.

Spiking is a risk in clubs and bars as anywhere: buy your own drinks and keep them in sight. Solo women generally move around central districts at night without problems, but take a cab rather than walking through parks or along empty canal paths.

Berliners themselves are split. In the European Commission's 2023 survey of city residents, 60% said they feel safe walking alone at night in Berlin, about the same as in London, but 77% feel safe in their own neighbourhood. The gap points to specific places, such as the ones police watch, rather than the city as a whole.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Germany. In July 2026 a driver hit a crowd at Berlin's Christopher Street Day, killing one person and injuring 29, and the city still remembers the 2016 truck attack on the Breitscheidplatz Christmas market. Barriers now surround big markets and events. Follow police instructions in crowds.

Traffic, air and weather

Traffic is not a major danger. Police counted 37 road deaths in 2025, about 1 per 100,000 people and down from 55 in 2024; nearly 60% of the dead were over 65. Watch for cyclists. Berlin's bike lanes often run along the pavement, painted red or marked with a different stone, and riders expect you to keep off them. Cross tram tracks at right angles if you cycle.

Air quality meets EU limits but PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary stay above the WHO guideline, especially on main roads. Tap water is safe. Emergency care is excellent, and the Charité is one of Europe's largest university hospitals; EU visitors should bring an EHIC, others need travel insurance.

Natural hazards are mild: summer heatwaves, autumn storms that bring down trees in parks, and occasional cloudbursts that flood underpasses.

How we scored it

Traffic safety (90) and natural hazards (92) are Berlin's strongest factors, and violent crime (86) is good for a European capital. Walking at night (71) and theft and scams (72) are the weakest. Night safety follows the EU's 2023 survey of residents, which we use for every European city, and the drug hot spots in Kreuzberg and Neukölln are where it shows. Theft reflects pickpocketing on public transport and at Alexanderplatz.

Questions people ask

Is Berlin safe at night?

Yes, for most of the city. Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg, Charlottenburg and Schöneberg are calm late at night, and the U-Bahn runs all night on Fridays and Saturdays. Avoid walking through Görlitzer Park and the area under the tracks at Kottbusser Tor after dark, where drug dealing and robberies are concentrated.

Is Alexanderplatz dangerous?

It is busy and mostly harmless by day, but it is on the police list of crime-burdened places, with 6,535 offences recorded there in 2024, mostly theft and assaults. Keep your bag closed in the station and on the square, and do not linger there late at night.

Where do pickpockets operate in Berlin?

On crowded U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains, especially the U2, U8 and the S-Bahn through Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstraße, at the main stations and in tourist crowds around the Brandenburg Gate and the East Side Gallery. Nearly half of the city's pickpocketing happens on public transport.

Which area is safest to stay in Berlin?

Mitte (away from Alexanderplatz), Prenzlauer Berg, Charlottenburg and Schöneberg are safe, central and well connected. Kreuzberg and Neukölln are lively and fine to stay in, but pick a street away from Kottbusser Tor, Görlitzer Park and Hermannplatz.

Is Berlin safe for LGBT travellers?

Berlin is one of Europe's most open cities and Schöneberg has a long-established gay scene. Police recorded more far-right attacks on Pride events in 2025, and in July 2026 a driver hit a crowd at Christopher Street Day, killing one person, so stay alert at large events.
