Is Nadi safe?
Nadi
Nadi, the town by Fiji's main airport, is safe for most visitors by day, and the gated Denarau resorts are the safest base, though not crime-free. Theft is common in town, Canada advises against walking outside after dark, roads are unlit and getting deadlier, and the Nadi River floods the town in big storms.

Natural hazards10% of score
52 out of 100, WeakThe ADB counts 84 floods in Nadi since 1870, 26 of them major since 1991; the January 2009 flood killed 11 people in Fiji and did most of its FJ$113m damage around Nadi. Cyclones hit from November to April; Vaianu passed close to the west coast in April 2026 without making landfall, and 2,182 people went to evacuation centres, 1,796 of them in the Western Division (IFRC).
Is Nadi safe?
For most visitors, yes, with more care than you need in Auckland or Sydney. Nadi is where nearly everyone arrives in Fiji: the international airport sits 9 km from town, and the Asian Development Bank counted 842,884 visitors entering through it in 2017. Fiji recorded 2.1 Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary people in 2023, and serious crime against tourists is uncommon.
The catches are theft in town, real risk for women walking at night, unlit and increasingly deadly roads, and floods. We score Nadi 67, close to Bali (66): fewer road deaths, but more flood risk and more limited hospital care.
Where to stay and where to take care
Denarau Island, a gated area of big resorts and the marina for boats to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, is the safest base, with hotel security and little street life after dark. Wailoaloa Beach, between the airport and town, has cheaper hotels and backpacker hostels. Nadi town itself is busy by day with shops, markets and the Sri Siva Subramaniya temple, but quiet and poorly lit at night.
Canada's travel advice says pickpocketing and bag snatching happen frequently in downtown Suva and Nadi, and that thieves target tourists at bus stations, airports, lookouts and hotel lobbies. It also names Denarau Island, along with downtown Suva, as a place where violent crime, including armed robbery and sexual assault, sometimes occurs. That is not a reason to avoid Denarau, but it is a reason to lock your room and use the safe.
Walking at night
Fiji is not in Gallup's global safety survey, so we set this factor from official advice. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary tells visitors to take extra care walking at night in cities and towns, especially women travelling alone, and reports serious sexual assaults on foreign women, including British nationals. Canada is blunter: avoid walking outside after dark, even in groups.
A widely reported case shows why. In the early hours of 1 January 2025, two Virgin Australia crew members on a layover were allegedly attacked in Nadi's nightclub area, one robbed and one sexually assaulted. Fiji's tourism minister said such attacks can happen anywhere and advised tourists to take care in nightclub areas late at night. Use licensed taxis with yellow plates between your hotel and bars, watch your drink, and do not accept lifts from strangers. The FCDO also warns about methanol in alcoholic drinks in travel destinations; buy from licensed bars and shops.
Roads after dark
WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 4.7 road deaths per 100,000 people in Fiji in 2023, and the trend is up: in November 2025 the police commissioner reported a 73% rise in deaths compared with the same period of 2024, blaming "poor and bad driving behavior and blatant disregard of road rules". The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says roads lack street lighting and have pedestrians and stray animals on them at night, and advises against road travel outside urban areas after dark.
For Nadi visitors, that mostly means the Queens Road south to the Coral Coast and north to Lautoka. Plan transfers in daylight where you can, wear a seatbelt in the back, and use only taxis and minibuses with yellow registration plates; unlicensed minibuses are often uninsured.
Floods and cyclones
Nadi town was built where the Nadi and Malakua rivers meet, and it floods. The Asian Development Bank counts 84 floods since 1870, 54 of them after 1980 and 26 major ones since 1991. The January 2009 flood killed 11 people in Fiji and left 12,000 homeless; the Nadi area took about FJ$81 million of the FJ$113 million damage. A flood alleviation scheme has been planned for years, but the river still rises in big storms.
Cyclone season runs from November to April. Tropical Cyclone Vaianu passed close to the Western Division on 7–8 April 2026 without making landfall, and its rain and wind drove 2,182 people across Fiji into evacuation centres, 1,796 of them in the west, according to the Red Cross (IFRC). Most storms mean a few days of wind, rain and cancelled boat transfers for resort guests, but roads into town can flood within hours. Follow the Fiji Meteorological Service and your hotel's instructions.
Health
There is no malaria, but dengue, Zika and chikungunya are spread by day-biting mosquitoes, and leptospirosis rises after floods. CDC recommends hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says medical care is limited, hospitals usually ask for cash, and serious cases are often evacuated abroad. Divers should know that Fiji's only recompression chamber, in Suva, is not always working. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is essential.
How we scored it
Violent crime (78) is Nadi's strongest factor, as serious crime is uncommon even if Canada and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary flag assaults. Natural hazards (52) is the weakest, for river floods and cyclones, and walking at night (60) follows the FCDO and Canadian advice in the absence of survey data. Confidence is low because Fiji publishes no city-level crime or road figures for Nadi, so most factors rest on national data and official advice.
Questions people ask
Is Nadi safe for tourists?
Yes, by day and in the resorts. Most visitors stay on Denarau Island or along Wailoaloa Beach and only pass through Nadi town to shop or see the Sri Siva Subramaniya temple. Keep phones and bags close in town, where Canada says theft is frequent, and take a yellow-plate taxi rather than walking after dark.

Is Denarau Island safe?
Denarau is a gated resort and marina area with hotel security, and it is the safest place to stay around Nadi. It is not crime-free; Canada names it among the places where violent crime occurs. Lock your room, use the hotel safe and do not walk the unlit roads off the island at night.
Is it safe to arrive at Nadi airport late at night?

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says Fiji's roads are unlit and have people and animals on them at night. If you land late, stay near the airport or in Nadi and travel on to the Coral Coast or Suva in daylight, using your resort transfer or a yellow-plate taxi.
Does Nadi flood?
Yes. The town sits where the Nadi and Malakua rivers meet, and the Asian Development Bank counts 26 major floods since 1991. In January 2009 floodwater covered much of the town. In the wet season, follow the Fiji Meteorological Service and your hotel's advice, and never drive through floodwater.
