Is Phuket safe?
Phuket
Phuket is safe from serious crime for most visitors, but motorbike crashes are the biggest danger, and its west-coast beaches drown swimmers every monsoon season. Jet-ski damage claims and taxi fares are the main scams; the 2004 tsunami left a working warning system behind.

Is Phuket safe?
For most visitors, yes, but the dangers are not the ones people expect. Serious crime against tourists is uncommon. What hurts and kills visitors in Phuket is the road and the sea: rented motorbikes on steep, wet hills, and rip currents off the west-coast beaches in the monsoon.
The numbers make the point. In just over three months of 2023, Phuket recorded 38 road deaths and 6,422 people injured in crashes, according to Thailand's Road Safety Committee (ThaiRSC). Thailand as a whole had about 22 road deaths per 100,000 people in 2023, by WHO's latest estimate, more than twice the level our rubric treats as very high. We score Phuket 62, below Bangkok (66) and Bali (67), mainly because of the roads and the sea.
Motorbikes: the biggest risk
The UK FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary notes that the WHO ranks Thailand among the deadliest countries in the world for motorcycle riders. Phuket adds its own hazards: steep, winding hill roads, sudden downpours that make the surface slick, sand on bends, and traffic that mixes trucks, minivans and tourists who have never ridden before.
The legal side matters too. The FCDO warns that motorbikes and scooters rented in tourist areas are often unregistered and cannot legally be ridden on a public road. Helmets are compulsory. Riding without a valid licence for the class of bike can void your travel insurance, and a hospital stay in a private Phuket hospital is expensive. Never hand over your passport as a deposit.
If you want to avoid this risk altogether:
- Use Grab, Bolt or metered taxis and agree on a price before you get in a tuk-tuk.
- If you do ride, wear a full-face helmet, avoid steep hill roads in rain and at night, and do not drink and ride.
- As a pedestrian, use crossings with lights where they exist and watch for bikes on the pavement.
Rip currents and drownings
Phuket's west coast faces the Andaman Sea, and from May to October the south-west monsoon brings big swells and strong rip currents. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary notes that people have drowned in strong riptides in Thailand and that beaches use a flag system, with lifeguards on designated beaches.
In June 2025, three foreign tourists drowned in two days, at Kata, Karon and Bang Tao, all around 4 p.m. One was on her first day on the island. Local authorities responded by putting up red flags in Thai, English, Chinese and Russian and warning that even shallow water can sweep swimmers into deep water.
Simple rules cut the risk:
- In the monsoon, swim only where lifeguards are on duty and never past a red flag.
- Do not swim at night or after drinking.
- If a current pulls you out, do not fight it; swim parallel to the shore, then back in, and raise an arm for help.
- In the dry season from November to April the sea on most beaches is calm.
The tsunami and the warning system
On 26 December 2004, a magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra sent a tsunami across the Indian Ocean. NOAA's tsunami database records 8,212 deaths in Thailand, and wave run-ups of about 5 metres at Patong Beach. Run-ups at Khao Lak, north of Phuket, reached 8 to 10 metres.
Thailand built a warning system afterwards. Phuket has 19 warning towers, which broadcast alerts in several languages and are tested with the national anthem at 8 a.m. on Wednesdays, and officials say evacuation routes and signs are checked regularly. A tsunami on that scale is rare, but if you feel a long, strong earthquake on the coast or hear a siren, head uphill or inland at once.
Scams, nights out and health
Phuket's scams cost money more often than health. Jet-ski operators sometimes claim damage that was already there and hold a passport until paid. Taxi and tuk-tuk fares are high and best agreed in advance. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary also warns of bag snatchers on motorbikes. Gallup finds 70% of people in Thailand feel safe walking alone at night, against 94% in China.
Bangla Road in Patong is loud and crowded. The FCDO warns of drink spiking, drug-assisted sexual assaults against men and women, and deaths from methanol in alcoholic drinks. Buy drinks from reputable bars and avoid cheap spirits of unknown origin.
Private hospitals on the island are well equipped but expensive, and the FCDO says all hospitals in Thailand require a guarantee of payment before treatment. Dengue is present, especially in the rainy season, so use repellent. See our Thailand page for the country as a whole.
How we scored it
Traffic safety (25) is Phuket's weakest factor by far, reflecting Thailand's road death rate, still more than twice the rubric's threshold of 10 per 100,000, and the island's motorbike crashes. Natural hazards (55) cover monsoon rip currents and the tsunami risk, and theft and scams (62) the jet-ski and taxi tricks. Violent crime (77) uses Thailand's national estimate, since Phuket publishes no rate of its own.
Questions people ask
Is it safe to rent a scooter in Phuket?
It is the riskiest thing most visitors do here. Phuket's roads killed 38 people in the first 14 weeks of 2023, nearly three a week, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that rental bikes are often unregistered and that riding without the right licence can void your travel insurance. If you have never ridden a motorbike at home, do not learn in Phuket; use Grab, Bolt or a taxi.
Is it safe to swim in Phuket during the rainy season?
Only where lifeguards say so. From May to October the west-coast beaches, such as Kata, Karon, Surin and Bang Tao, get strong waves and rip currents, and red flags mean swimming is banned. In June 2025 three foreign tourists drowned in two days, one of them on her first day on the island. If a current pulls you out, swim parallel to the beach, then back in.
What should I do if a tsunami warning sounds in Phuket?
Move inland or uphill at once, following the evacuation signs, and do not wait to see the sea retreat. Nineteen towers on the island broadcast warnings in several languages and are tested every week. A big tsunami is rare, but the 2004 wave reached Patong with a run-up of about 5 metres.
How do I avoid the jet-ski scam in Phuket?
Rent only from operators your hotel recommends, photograph the jet ski with the owner before you set off, and never leave your passport as a deposit, which the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary specifically warns against. If an operator demands money for damage you did not cause, call the tourist police on 1155 rather than paying on the beach.
Is Bangla Road safe at night?
Mostly, if you watch your drink and your bill. Patong's nightlife strip is crowded, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns of drink spiking and sexual assaults near bars late at night. Do not leave drinks unattended, check bills before paying, and take a booked car rather than walking along dark roads to outlying hotels.
