Is Orlando safe?

Orlando

Orlando's theme park resort areas are some of the most closely guarded places in the US, and the city recorded only 10 murders in 2025. The bigger risks for visitors are the roads, car break-ins, summer lightning and heat, and hurricanes that bring wind and floods inland.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Violent crime25% of score

    72 out of 100, Good

The Orlando Police Department reported 10 homicides in 2025 and 24 in 2024, about 3 to 7 per 100,000 (MCCA). Aggravated assaults, at 1,200, are high for a city of about 330,000. Disney World and International Drive are policed by the Orange County Sheriff.

  • Theft and scams20% of score

    75 out of 100, Good

Car break-ins in hotel and attraction car parks, theft of unattended bags and phones at pools and parks, and ticket resale scams are the usual problems. Pickpocketing in the parks is uncommon.

  • Walking at night15% of score

    72 out of 100, Good

The Disney, Universal and International Drive resort areas are busy, well lit and patrolled late. Downtown's bar district on Orange Avenue sees fights and occasional shootings at closing time, and parts of the west side such as Pine Hills have more gun crime.

  • Traffic safety15% of score

    45 out of 100, Weak

Orange County recorded 209 road deaths in 2022, about 14 per 100,000, and says the total fell by up to 28% by 2024. FLHSMV ranks it the third-deadliest Florida county for pedestrians. Wide, fast roads like Colonial Drive are hard to cross.

  • Health and environment15% of score

    85 out of 100, Excellent

The EPA's Winter Park monitor averaged 6.3 µg/m³ of PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary over 2023–2025, well within the federal standard. Hospitals are excellent but expensive. Summer heat and humidity send many park visitors for treatment.

  • Natural hazards10% of score

    62 out of 100, Fair

Inland Orlando escapes storm surge, but hurricanes still bring damaging wind and floods. Milton in October 2024 dropped 14.83 inches of rain near Orlando (NHC). Central Florida also has frequent summer thunderstorms with dangerous lightning.

Is Orlando safe?

Yes, for the holiday most people come for. The Orlando Police Department recorded 10 homicides in 2025, down from 24 in 2024, according to the Major Cities Chiefs Association. For a city of about 330,000 that is roughly 3 per 100,000, lower than Miami and close to New York. Robberies fell by a quarter to 299.

Most visitors never set foot in the city's higher-crime areas. Walt Disney World, Universal and International Drive form a separate world of hotels and attractions, with heavy private security on top of police patrols. The risks you are more likely to meet are on the road, in the sky or in your car park. We score Orlando 70.

Crime in the tourist corridor

Much of what visitors call Orlando is not in the City of Orlando at all. Disney World sits in its own district south-west of the city, and most of International Drive is in unincorporated Orange County, both policed by the Orange County Sheriff's Office. The city police figures above cover downtown, Lake Eola, the airport area and the residential neighbourhoods around them.

Inside the parks, crime is rare. The common problems for visitors are:

  • Car break-ins at hotel car parks, outlet malls and restaurant lots along I-Drive. Leave nothing visible, especially luggage on arrival and departure days.
  • Unattended bags and phones at hotel pools and water parks.
  • Ticket scams. Park tickets sold second-hand online or at roadside booths are often used, fake or tied to someone else's identity. Buy directly from the parks or authorised sellers.
  • Timeshare pitches disguised as cheap ticket offers.

Downtown is pleasant by day and early evening. The bar district on Orange Avenue gets crowded and rowdy around closing time on weekends, and there have been shootings there, so leave before the bars empty and use a ride app.

Theme park ride safety

The big parks run millions of ride cycles a year with few serious incidents, but deaths do happen. In September 2025 a 32-year-old man died after riding Stardust Racers, a launched roller coaster at Universal's new Epic Universe park. The Orange County medical examiner listed the cause as multiple blunt impact injuries and ruled the death an accident.

The warnings at ride entrances about heart conditions, back and neck problems, pregnancy and height limits are there for good reasons. Use the lap bars and harnesses as instructed, keep children within the height limits rather than bending them, and choose gentler rides if you are unsure. Smaller attractions outside the major parks are inspected by the state; check that they look well run before you strap in.

The roads are the main risk

Central Florida's roads are far more dangerous than its crime figures. Orange County recorded 209 road deaths in 2022, about 14 per 100,000, and says it cut the toll by up to 28% by 2024. The state's highway safety department has for years ranked Orange County the third-deadliest Florida county for pedestrians. Smart Growth America's 2026 report placed the Orlando metro 25th-worst in the country for pedestrian deaths, an improvement from first place in 2019.

Interstate 4, which links the parks, downtown and the airport, is busy and crash-prone, and roads such as Colonial Drive, Orange Blossom Trail and International Drive are wide and fast with long gaps between crossings. If you drive, avoid peak hours on I-4 and take care with toll lanes and late merges. If you walk, cross only at signals and wear something light at night.

Heat, lightning and hurricanes

Summer is the hard season. From June to September temperatures reach the 90s °F with high humidity, and park visitors queue for hours in the sun. Drink water constantly, wear a hat and plan indoor breaks in the afternoon. Thunderstorms build on most summer afternoons, and central Florida sees some of the most frequent lightning in the US. When you hear thunder, get inside a building.

Hurricanes are a lesser but real risk. Orlando is about 80 km from the Atlantic coast, so storm surge does not reach it, but wind and rain do. Hurricane Milton in October 2024 dropped 14.83 inches of rain near Orlando, according to the National Hurricane Center. Air quality is good: the EPA's Winter Park monitor averaged 6.3 µg/m³ of PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary over 2023 to 2025.

How to stay safe in Orlando

  • Keep valuables out of sight in parked cars, every time.
  • Buy park tickets only from the parks or authorised sellers.
  • Drink water through the day in summer and head indoors when thunder starts.
  • Cross roads at signals, especially on I-Drive and near the parks.
  • In hurricane season, buy insurance that covers storm disruption.

How we scored it

Health and environment (85) is the strongest factor, thanks to clean air and excellent hospitals. Road safety (45) is the weakest, reflecting Orange County's death toll and pedestrian record. Violent crime (72) rewards the very low homicide count, held back by high aggravated assault numbers.

Questions people ask

Are Orlando theme park rides safe?

Serious injuries are rare given the tens of millions of rides each year, but they happen. In September 2025 a 32-year-old man died after riding Stardust Racers at Universal's Epic Universe; the medical examiner ruled it an accident caused by blunt impact injuries. Read the health warnings at each ride entrance, and skip intense rides if you have heart, back or neck problems or are pregnant.

Is International Drive safe at night?

The main stretch between the Orange County Convention Center and Universal is busy, well lit and patrolled, and fine for evening walks between hotels, restaurants and ICON Park. The northern end near Kirkman Road is quieter. The bigger danger is traffic, so cross only at signals, since I-Drive is wide and drivers are often lost tourists.

Which areas of Orlando should tourists avoid?

Visitors rarely have reason to go to Pine Hills, Parramore or parts of the west side along Old Winter Garden Road, which see more gun crime. Downtown is fine for dinner and Lake Eola, but the Orange Avenue bar strip can turn rowdy after midnight on weekends.

What should I do about lightning at Orlando theme parks?

Summer storms build most afternoons from June to September. Parks close outdoor rides and water parks clear pools when lightning is within a few miles. When you hear thunder, go indoors to a shop, restaurant or show building rather than sheltering under trees or open canopies.

Is Orlando safe during hurricane season?

Orlando is inland, so it avoids storm surge, and the parks have well-tested storm plans; they close and shelter guests in hotels when a hurricane hits. Expect flight cancellations and power cuts. Buy insurance that covers storm disruption and follow the National Hurricane Center.
