Is Pattaya safe?
Pattaya
Pattaya is safe enough for most visitors by day and on the family beaches at Jomtien. The trouble clusters around Walking Street and the bar sois at night, where fights with staff, robbery and drink spiking are reported. Roads are the biggest killer, and heavy rain floods the city's streets and canals.

Is Pattaya safe?
Yes, for most visitors, and especially by day. Serious crime against tourists is uncommon, as it is across Thailand, where WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary about 4.4 Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary people. The catch is that Pattaya is built around nightlife, and the problems cluster where the bars are: fights with door staff, padded bills, robbery and drink spiking around Walking Street and the sois off Beach Road. The thing most likely to put you in hospital is a motorbike.
We score Pattaya 62, the same as Phuket and below Bangkok (66). Its crime and night scores are a little lower than Phuket's, and its sea and roads a little less deadly.
Walking Street and the bar sois
Walking Street, at the south end of Pattaya Bay, closes to traffic in the evening and fills with clubs, go-go bars and touts until dawn. Tourist police patrol it on foot, and most visitors walk its length without trouble. But violent incidents are frequent enough to matter. In September 2025 an Indian visitor reported being beaten with a blunt object and threatened at gunpoint by a club manager and two bodyguards in a row over a bill, who also kept his passport, according to Pattaya Mail. In March 2026 tourist police stopped three people beating a foreign tourist on the street and detained them. Disputes over bills with bouncers and staff are the common pattern.
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that violent sexual assaults and unprovoked attacks happen in tourist areas across Thailand, most often near bars late at night, and that drink spiking and drug-assisted assault affect both men and women. It also reports deaths from methanol in alcoholic drinks.
Practical rules for a night out here:
- Ask the price before you order and pay for each round, so no bill builds up.
- Keep your passport in the hotel safe and carry a copy.
- Walk away from arguments with staff and call the tourist police on 1155 if a bill is disputed.
- Do not take anyone you have just met back to your room with your valuables out.
Scams and theft
Pattaya's scams are mostly about money rather than violence. Jet-ski operators on Pattaya Beach and Jomtien have long charged riders for "damage" that was already there and held their passports until they paid; the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says never to hand over a passport as a guarantee. Robbery and pickpocketing by sex workers on Beach Road and Walking Street are a familiar complaint, and in April 2026 police detained 31 transgender women in a crackdown on incidents involving tourists, Khaosod English reported. Bag snatching from motorbikes and ATM skimming, both named by the FCDO for Thailand, also happen here. Use ATMs inside banks.
Roads: the real risk
WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary Thailand's road death rate at 21.9 per 100,000 people in 2023, one of the highest in Asia and about nine times the UK's. Most victims are on motorbikes, and Pattaya is a scooter town. Sukhumvit Road, the main highway along the eastern seaboard, runs through the city with heavy lorry traffic, and the one-way loops of Beach Road and Second Road are busy day and night.
The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says rental scooters in tourist areas are often unregistered, and that riding without a licence valid for the bike can void your insurance. Helmets are required by law. The blue baht buses (songthaews) that circle Beach Road and Second Road cost little and are safer than riding yourself; ride-hailing apps work across the city.
Floods, sea and health
Pattaya floods quickly. Run-off from the hills east of the city pours into its drains, and a few hours of rain can submerge Third Road, Soi Buakhao and South Pattaya. On 24 September 2026 three foreign men walking through floodwater in Nong Prue may not have realised that their route crossed a bridge over a drainage canal. Two fell in; one was pulled out and the other was swept away by the current. Stay out of moving water.
At the beach, the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns of rip currents in the monsoon season and jellyfish stings, which can be fatal; follow the flags and the lifeguards. Boats to Koh Larn are usually routine, but do not board an overloaded speedboat in rough weather. The Gulf of Thailand carries little tsunami risk.
Private hospitals in Pattaya are of a high standard and used to foreign patients, but they ask for a payment guarantee before treatment, so carry your insurance details. Dengue and rabies are present, and tap water is not safe to drink.
How we scored it
Traffic safety (30) is Pattaya's weakest factor, set by Thailand's road death rate and a city that runs on scooters. Theft and scams (58) reflects jet-ski, bar and street robberies aimed at visitors. Violent crime (75) is the strongest factor, held below Phuket's 77 for the assaults reported on Walking Street. Night safety (70) uses Gallup's Thai share, two points below Phuket for the same reason.
Questions people ask
Is Pattaya safe for families?
Yes, if you base yourself away from the bar district. Jomtien and Naklua are quieter, with family hotels and calmer evenings, and daytime trips to Koh Larn, the beaches and the attractions east of the city rarely cause problems. The risks for families are the traffic, the sea and the heat, not crime.
Is Walking Street in Pattaya safe at night?
Most people walk its length without trouble, and tourist police patrol on foot. Fights do break out, often between customers and club staff over bills, and visitors were assaulted there in September 2025 and March 2026. Agree drink prices first, pay as you go, walk away from arguments, and never leave a drink unattended.
Are jet skis in Pattaya a scam?
Not every operator cheats, but damage claims against tourists are a long-running problem in Pattaya and Phuket. Photograph or film the jet ski all round before you ride, and never leave your passport as a deposit, which the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns against. If a dispute starts, call the tourist police on 1155 instead of paying on the spot.
Is it safe to rent a scooter in Pattaya?
It is the most common way visitors get badly hurt. Thailand's road death rate is about 22 per 100,000 people, mostly motorbike riders, and Sukhumvit Road and Pattaya's Second Road are crowded and fast. If you ride, carry the right licence and an international driving permit, wear a helmet and avoid riding after drinking. The baht buses (songthaews) on fixed loops are cheaper and safer.
Does Pattaya flood?
Yes, in heavy rain from May to October. A few hours of downpour can put Third Road, Soi Buakhao and parts of South Pattaya under water. Do not wade or walk through moving floodwater, as it can hide open drains and canals; in September 2026 a foreign man was swept away in a drainage canal this way.
