How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Violent crime25% of score

    84 out of 100, Good

San Diego police reported 39 homicides in 2025, down from 48, or about 2.8 per 100,000 (MCCA). The FBI's violent crime rate of 376 per 100,000 is close to the US rate of 330 and well below Seattle, Boston or San Francisco.

  • Theft and scams20% of score

    74 out of 100, Good

The property crime rate of 1,556 per 100,000 in 2025 matched the US average (FBI). SDPD data list 3,787 thefts from vehicles, about 270 per 100,000 residents, with Pacific Beach, Mission Valley and the beach car parks among the worst areas.

  • Walking at night15% of score

    72 out of 100, Good

Gallup's 2025 report puts the US at 71% feeling safe walking alone at night. The Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy and the waterfront are busy and patrolled late. East Village has many people living on the street, and Pacific Beach gets rowdy at bar closing time.

  • Traffic safety15% of score

    76 out of 100, Good

SDPD collision data record 50 deaths on city streets in 2025 and 45 in 2024, about 3.5 per 100,000; 27 of the 2025 dead were pedestrians. Freeway crashes, handled by the California Highway Patrol, are not included, so the true rate is higher.

  • Health and environment15% of score

    80 out of 100, Good

EPA monitors in the city averaged 7.6 to 9.7 µg/m³ of PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary over 2023–2025 away from the border, but 14.1 at San Ysidro and 13.6 at Otay Mesa next to Mexico, and the county breaks the federal ozone standard. Sewage from the Tijuana River closes beaches in the far south. Hospital care is good but expensive.

  • Natural hazards10% of score

    68 out of 100, Fair

Wildfires in the inland suburbs, an active fault zone under the city and flash floods are the main hazards. On 22 January 2024 a record downpour of 2.72 inches flooded Southcrest and Mountain View, and hundreds of people were rescued (City of San Diego).

Is San Diego safe?

Yes. San Diego is one of the safest big cities in the US, and for a visitor it is safer than Los Angeles or San Francisco. Police reported 39 homicides in 2025 for about 1.4 million residents, or 2.8 per 100,000, less than half the Los Angeles rate. Its property crime rate is right at the national average, unusual for a large California city.

That does not make it risk-free. The beaches have car break-ins and rip currents, East Village has a large homeless population, and the inland hills burn. We score San Diego 77, among the highest of the US cities we cover, behind only New York and Boston.

Violent crimes per 100,000376330
Property crimes per 100,0001,5561,552

Source: FBI Crime Data Explorer. San Diego's violent crime rate is a little above the national figure because of aggravated assaults, 4,351 in the police chiefs' survey. Much of that is concentrated in parts of the southeast and downtown, not in the beach towns or La Jolla.

The trend is down. Homicides fell from 48 in 2024 to 39 in 2025, robberies from 1,080 to 962, and the FBI's violent crime rate from 414 to 376 per 100,000.

Car break-ins and beach theft

The theft visitors meet is mostly at the beach. SDPD recorded 3,787 thefts from vehicles in 2025, far fewer per resident than in San Francisco or Seattle, but concentrated where visitors park. Pacific Beach had more than any other neighbourhood, followed by Mission Valley, North Park, University City and La Jolla.

  • Do not leave bags, phones or car keys on the sand while you swim.
  • Leave nothing visible in a car at La Jolla Cove, Ocean Beach or the Mission Beach car parks.
  • Lock e-scooters and bikes; they disappear quickly from the boardwalk.

Pickpocketing is rare, with 126 cases in all of 2025. Scams aimed at tourists are uncommon.

Downtown, East Village and Pacific Beach at night

The Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, Seaport Village and the Embarcadero are busy until late and are the safest places to stay. Downtown's issue is East Village, where the city's largest concentration of people living on the street meets new apartment towers. It is not especially violent for visitors, but it is unpleasant to walk late. Pacific Beach is San Diego's bar district, with fights and drunk driving around closing time. La Jolla, Coronado, Point Loma and Mission Hills are quieter bases.

Roads, air and the border

Traffic is the bigger everyday danger. SDPD's collision data show 50 people killed on city streets in 2025 and 45 in 2024, about 3.5 per 100,000, and 27 of the 2025 dead were pedestrians. Freeway crashes are counted separately by the CHP. El Cajon Boulevard had the most deaths of any street in 2023 to 2025, followed by Imperial Avenue; wide, fast roads like these are hard to cross on foot.

Air quality is good on the coast and worse inland and at the border. Away from the border, EPA monitors in the city averaged 7.6 to 9.7 µg/m³ of PM2.5Tiny airborne particles 2.5 micrometres across or smaller. They reach deep into the lungs and are the air pollutant most linked to early death.More in the glossary over 2023 to 2025, around the federal limit of 9. San Ysidro, next to the busiest border crossing in the Western Hemisphere, averaged 14.1, and Otay Mesa 13.6. The county also breaks the federal ozone standard. Sewage-laden water from the Tijuana River regularly closes beaches from the border to Imperial Beach, and sometimes Coronado. Check the county's beach water map before you swim.

If you are thinking of a day trip south, read our Mexico page first. The UK advises against all but essential travel to Tijuana, apart from the airport and the toll road to the border.

Fire, floods and earthquakes

Wildfire is the hazard San Diegans plan around. Santa Ana winds in autumn can push fires from the backcountry into suburbs; the 2003 Cedar Fire and the 2007 Witch Fire both burned homes inside the city. The Rose Canyon fault runs beneath La Jolla, downtown and San Diego Bay, so a damaging earthquake is possible. Floods come rarely but hard: on 22 January 2024, 2.72 inches of rain fell at the airport, the fourth-wettest day on record, and hundreds of people were rescued from homes in Southcrest and Mountain View.

How we scored it

Violent crime (84) is the strongest factor, with one of the lowest Homicide rateThe number of people killed on purpose each year for every 100,000 residents. It is the most comparable crime figure between countries.More in the glossary of any large US city. Health and environment (80) loses points for border pollution, ozone and sewage on southern beaches. Natural hazards (68) are the weakest, because of wildfire and earthquake risk. Traffic safety (76) reflects pedestrian deaths on wide arterial roads.

Questions people ask

Is downtown San Diego safe at night?

The Gaslamp Quarter, Little Italy, the Embarcadero and the area around Petco Park are busy and well policed in the evening. East Village, especially the blocks east of Petco Park toward the freeway, has many tents and people in crisis and is unpleasant to walk late. Take a ride app if your hotel is on the far side of East Village.

Is Pacific Beach safe?

Yes, but it is San Diego's party beach. Garnet Avenue and the boardwalk get loud and sometimes fight-prone after the bars close at 2 am, and Pacific Beach had more thefts from cars in 2025 than any other neighbourhood. Families often prefer La Jolla Shores or Coronado.

Is it safe to swim at San Diego beaches?

Swim near a lifeguard tower and check the county's beach water quality map first. Rip currents are common at Ocean Beach and Mission Beach. Beaches near the Mexican border and Imperial Beach are often closed because of sewage from the Tijuana River, especially after rain.

Is it safe to go from San Diego to Tijuana?

Millions of people cross every year, mostly without trouble, but Tijuana has a very high murder rate.
