Is Barbados safe to visit?

Barbados

Barbados is one of the calmer Caribbean islands for visitors, and the US rates it Level 1. Petty theft is the usual problem, but about 50 people were killed in each of 2024 and 2025, about 18 per 100,000, mostly in gang shootings away from the tourist coast. Rip currents and hurricanes are the other risks.

How the score breaks down

The overall score is the weighted average of these factors. Scoring rules

  • Violent crime25% of score

    47 out of 100, Weak

Police recorded 49 murders and one manslaughter in 2024, about 18 per 100,000, and InSight Crime counts 50 murders in 2025 from an unofficial database. The UNODC average for 2017-2023 was about 12. Most victims die in gang shootings.

  • Conflict and terrorism20% of score

WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 8.2 road deaths per 100,000 people for 2019, just above our 8 threshold; the estimate is old and police publish only running counts. Roads are narrow and winding and traffic drives on the left.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says the Queen Elizabeth Hospital can handle many treatments but serious cases may need evacuation, and private clinics may want payment up front. Dengue, chikungunya and Zika are present.

  • Natural hazards10% of score

    72 out of 100, Good

Barbados lies east of the usual hurricane track. Elsa in 2021 was the first hurricane strike since 1955, and Beryl passed about 100 nautical miles south in 2024, wrecking more than 200 fishing boats (NHC). East-coast currents are strong.

    68 out of 100, Fair

The US travel advisoryThe US State Department's rating of each country from Level 1 (exercise normal precautions) to Level 4 (do not travel).More in the glossary says petty crime is common in tourist areas and most crimes against foreigners are bag snatching and pickpocketing. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary adds armed robbery and carjackings, and warns about ATMs, isolated beaches and street parties at night.

Is Barbados safe to visit?

Yes, for most visitors. The US State Department rates Barbados Level 1, "exercise normal precautions", and says most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity such as bag snatching and pickpocketing. Compare that with Trinidad and Tobago, 300 km to the south-west, at Level 3.

The catch is a rise in gun violence among young men. Police recorded 49 murders and one manslaughter in 2024, about 18 per 100,000 people, and InSight Crime counts another 50 murders in 2025 (from an unofficial database, because the government did not share its figures). With only about 283,000 residents, a handful of killings moves the rate a lot, so we also look at the longer run: the UNODC figures average about 12 per 100,000 for 2017-2023. Either way, it is well below Jamaica (about 24) and close to the Bahamas (about 21), and less than half the rate in Saint Lucia (about 39). We score Barbados 69.

Crime: what visitors actually face

Most of the killing is gang violence in residential areas that tourists rarely visit. The Criminal Justice Research and Planning Unit says firearms were used in two-thirds of murders in early 2025, and the average perpetrator was 22. By 20 August 2025 Barbados had recorded 33 homicides, and by early November 40 fatal shootings, against 34 in 2024.

The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary lists armed robbery, sexual assault, gang shootings and carjackings, and notes that some incidents have happened in busy public places. For a holidaymaker, though, the realistic risks are a snatched bag on the beach, a phone lifted at a street party, or a break-in at a rental villa. Choose accommodation with secure doors and windows, use the room safe, and leave expensive jewellery at home.

Be most careful at night: walking alone off the main roads, using street ATMs, and on empty beaches after dark. The Friday fish fry at Oistins and the bars of St Lawrence Gap are busy and generally fine, but go back by taxi.

The sea is a bigger risk than people expect

Drowning is a more likely holiday accident than crime. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary warns that currents can be deceptively strong, even on some popular beaches on the south and west coasts. Lifeguard stations are not staffed around the clock, and many beaches have no flags at all. On the Atlantic east coast, around Bathsheba and the Soup Bowl, swimming is not recommended on many beaches; go there to watch the surfers, not to swim.

Jet skis, dive boats and catamarans also run close to the shore on the west coast. Swim inside marked areas where they exist, and check the operator's safety briefing before a boat trip.

Hurricanes and other hazards

Barbados sits further east than the rest of the Caribbean chain, and most storms pass to its south or west. That luck does not always hold. Hurricane Elsa crossed the south of the island on 2 July 2021, the first hurricane strike since Janet in 1955, according to the National Hurricane Center. It damaged roofs, cut power to the whole island and tore part of the roof off the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Nobody was killed.

Three years later, Beryl passed about 100 nautical miles to the south-south-east as a major hurricane on 1 July 2024. Barbados got tropical-storm winds and heavy surf: the NHC says more than 200 fishing boats were damaged or destroyed, along with the cruise terminal, forty homes and the airport. The season runs from June to November. Earthquakes are a smaller risk, and the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary suggests checking the alert level of the Kick 'em Jenny underwater volcano off Grenada.

Roads and health care

WHO road-death estimateThe World Health Organization's estimate of road traffic deaths per 100,000 people in a country, adjusted for deaths that police statistics miss.More in the glossary 8.2 road deaths per 100,000 people for 2019, similar to Trinidad's police figure, but that estimate is now old. Roads are narrow, winding and often without pavements, and traffic drives on the left. If you hire a car, avoid unfamiliar rural roads after dark.

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown can handle many emergencies, but the FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says serious cases may need evacuation and treatment can be expensive. Some private clinics want payment up front and may not bill your insurer directly. Dengue, chikungunya and Zika are present, so use repellent.

How to stay safe in Barbados

  • Swim only where locals and lifeguards say it is safe, and never alone on the east coast.
  • Agree taxi fares in Barbados dollars before you get in; there are no meters.
  • Keep valuables out of sight on the beach, and use ATMs inside banks or malls by day.
  • Wearing camouflage clothing is illegal, including for children.
  • Emergency numbers: police 211, ambulance 511, fire 311.

How we scored it

Conflict (90) is the strongest factor: stable politics, no terrorism history, Level 1 advisories. Violent crime (47) is the weakest. The recent rate of about 18 per 100,000 sits in our 8-20 band, and we placed Barbados towards its lower end because 2024 and 2025 were both well above the longer average. Road safety (70), health (72), natural hazards (72) and petty crime (68) are solid without being outstanding. An official 2025 police total, when published, could move the crime score either way.

Questions people ask

Is Barbados safe for tourists at night?

Mostly not. The FCDO travel adviceThe UK government's travel advice for each country, which can advise against all travel or all but essential travel to specific areas.More in the glossary says swimming is not recommended on many east-coast beaches, such as around Bathsheba, because the Atlantic currents are particularly strong.
